Contaminant is well known for being one of if not the first full dive vr games on the market. While today its considered one of the most competitive and difficult speed games, its launch wasn't very smooth. At the time of release, full dive vr was still working out a lot of kinks. Things like heavy input delay and a lack of reticles marred the experience. It didn't help that the fast paced nature of the game lead a lot of cases of motion sickness.

Despite these issues a very dedicated few would attempt to run the game. These three individuals would be Frexx, xXx_milfsmasher59_xXx, and b1urrrz. The real competition was between Frexx and xXx_milfsmasher59_xXx as b1urrrz was more focused on glitch hunting and routing.

These three's early run were very unoptimised, as to be expected. On top of a lot modern tech not being known, all runners would often miss crucial shots and had to take breaks in the middle of runs to vomit. However one piece of tech we still use today made its debut during these early runs, slash cancel.

Contaminant, unlike other rpgs, doesn't use a mp system. Instead all special abilities and magic have a certain amount of uses before going on cooldown. One of these abilities slash can be canceled mid use by switching to a different ability inorder to save the charge and to gain a large burst of speed. While a useful movement tool, it is often hampered by the heavily forested areas you play in and its limited by the inability to change direction when launched. Thanks to this and the aforementioned issues the top run at the time by xXx_milfsmasher59_xXx was only at a 05:39:57. A very low time compared to the current record of today.

Milfsmasher's record would hold for a long 3 months, until b1urrrz would eventually discover another piece of tech, portal pierce. By using the movement tool of placing portals in just the right places, you can make the piercing thunder spell hit the same target up to 3 times dealing so much damage that the game often has trouble calculating it. This strategy allows the player to burst down bosses with blazing speed which cut off a whopping 30 minutes off the record, making the new record 5:08:46. Frexx would later push down this record by a whole minute to 5:07:32 after getting incredible luck on rune drops.

After this period was another dry spell where there was much happening in the contaminant speedrunning scene. There wouldn't be any new records until a whole 6 months later when the BakuX vr head set came out. This headset dealt with the motion sickness issue by effectively putting your body into a coma while in use. Without the need to take breaks Frexx and xXx_milfsmasher59_xXx were fired up and started pushing down the record even farther. At the end of the day Frexx once again took the new record at 3:38:45.

While those two were fiercely exchanging records with each other, a new challenger would quietly sprout up. His name m3zaddle, but he didn't really participate in the usual any% category. Instead he ran in a joke category called exhibitionist% where you speedran the game with an entirely naked character. This category would eventually get noticed by both Frexx and xXx_milfsmasher59_xXx. The both of the would try their hand at the category when any% started to grow stagnant.

B1urrrz wasn't slouching during this time and managed to briefly steal the any% record with their new discovery tree bump. They found that when wall jumping off a certain tree would give them extra momentum as the player's model slightly overlaps the tree's. The game doesn't want this happening so it forces the player's hand out giving a slight boost to speed as well as keeping the player's initial momentum when the hit the tree. This would allow the player to not only gain more speed, but to also change direction after slash canceling. B1urrrz breif record was the first sub 3:30 run at 3:28:34. Frexx and xXx_milfsmasher59_xXx would make use of this tech to eventually push the record down to 3:25:21

It was at this point that contaminant started to gain a lot more attention in the wider speedrun community. Challenger after challenger would come and the record would change hands almost everyday. That is until a new glitch hunter, b3ggar, would end up breaking the game entirely with a glitch that would be know as flare breach.

Using the explosive spell flare's self damage, you could cause the player's body to ragdoll through walls to get out of bounds. This bug allowed large portions of the game to be skipped outright. Frexx used this glitch to eventually cut down the record to a blazingly fast 1:39:56. Truly it was a crowning achievement, but tragedy would soon strike the community. Frexx would unfortunately suffer from a heart attack and die a week after setting his record. While his online persona was rather abrasive, the community heavily mourned his death and most of the big runners took a break from running contaminant to honor his death.

After a month long break, runners got back to it. xXx_milfsmasher59_xXx would eventually take Frexx's record with his 1:38:23 run. This record is held by him to this day.
