Chapter 1: Snap. Crackle. Pop.

 

Ryan was watching the “Creature from the Black Lagoon” on TV as part of a movie Horror-A-Thon in celebration of Halloween, when he first heard it.

Snap. Snap. Pop.

At first, he thought it was simply the movie. It was an old black-and-white film; it was probably just the audio.

Crackle. Crackle. Pop.

Or perhaps it was a problem with the speakers. 

Crackle. Snap. Pop.

No, the sounds were coming from somewhere else. Ryan muted the TV and stood up, listening intently for the source of the noise.

Snap. Snap.

It was coming from the kitchen. 

The sounds grew louder as Ryan treaded softly across the carpeted floor with his socked feet.

Snap. Crackle. Pop.

He turned the corner, peeked in, and saw... his younger brother eating cereal at the kitchen table.

“Want some?” His brother asked, motioning to the cereal box next to him. “There’s still some left.”

“No thanks,” Ryan replied.

His brother had been eating “Rice Krispies” cereal featuring the three mascots: Snap, Crackle, and Pop.
