Alex awoke with the distinct feeling they were dreaming, and after taking a look around, that feeling had to be justified. The room they were in was small, nice, and very fantasy. A simple bed, desk, and dresser with books strewn on the group in a few small piles. Looking out the window, a vast sky of stars not washed out by high power city lights twinkled over a skyline (if it could really be called that) of two to three storey buildings, built in a mix of very medieval and victorian styles. Descending a flight of stairs, they ran right into a door and opened it.

After stepping through the threshold, Ripple continued to be surprised by this world they had found themselves in. Monoliths of glass and brick towered over them, divided by stretches of smooth and rocky material. There was a surprising amount of people for how dark- no it wasn’t dark- late it must be, and all were wearing strange clothes, speaking in a weird language, and acting completely oblivious to what might be lurking in the dark corners. After taking a minute to simply look around, Ripple decided to head towards where the familiar smell of salt water was wafting from.

“At least there's something clearly familiar,” Alex thought as they walked towards the bay the city was built around. While the buildings were small and old fashioned, the layout was very neat, organized, and clean. They thought they had heard somewhere that medieval cities were smelly and filthy- but this was cleaner than even the nicer parts of their town. As they got closer to the water, houses gave way to parks and warehouses like some attempt to keep an industrial zone nice looking and integrated cleanly into the city. Somehow out of all of these oddities, one thing caught their eye.

Parallel strips of metal, running into the horizon both ways. Ripple was shocked at how such a thing could be kept so uniform- even after noticing that it was made of many joined pieces. Hopping onto and balancing their way down it, they couldn’t help but wonder why they were having such a vivid dream. Some people thought they were visions sent by the gods and some thought dreams were your mind trying to reconcile thoughts, but Ripple didn’t care much. Simply experiencing this crazy world was entertaining enough to not look for deeper meaning. They were broken out of their thoughts by a startling and loud blaring, making them lose their balance for a second before looking around for the source.

-----------

Alex whirled, just catching sight of a plume of smoke and dust coming from a few buildings over. Scared and excited they felt compelled to see what was going on over there. In under a minute they stood slack-jawed at a scene straight out of a high-budget CGI studio, a few nondescript figures threw fire, lightning, and glass at each other in a kaleidoscope of light and sound. A few other individuals had gathered with them- a mixture of panic and fascination able to be made out on their faces in the flashes of harsh light. From somewhere else a few yelling figures  jumped into the apparent fight- only adding to the chaos, right before the world got a lot brighter and a lot louder.

-----------

The blaring was closer, mixed into a cacophony of churning, grinding, and roaring as the light they had noticed got brighter. Equal parts fascinated and terrified, Ripple considered that maybe they should have been looking for a deeper message, as it appeared a god was angry at them for some reason. That was the only explanation for the single eyed, angry mass of dark bearing down on them. Ripple had never really found a god to pray to, but they were praying to any and all of them as the light reached them.
