I felt a bit stupid that I hadn’t bothered to check my body this entire time- but in my defense, when it’s comfortably your body- you wouldn’t think to. Everything you see and experience from your body is run-of-the-mill and ignored by your brain for the most part. Additionally, both Ripple and Alex had pretty slim arms and hands and I had only sat up, so there weren't any distinguishing features between the two that I'd noticed. A full-length mirror was wheeled in and I was left alone.

Any effort to describe myself would end up making me want to bury myself in a pit anyway, so I might as well channel the style of one of those creepy, likely single authors that wrote detective-action novels in the mid to late 1900’s from Alex’s timeline.

“She had a slender build that had just enough muscle to show her athleticism without looking out of place. When she walked, a nice sway in her curvy hips that naturally drew the eye complemented her long legs and pale, clear skin. Waist length hair like freshly-drawn gold wire matched the color of her eyes, which were set in a young but refined face. Peeking out from under their hair were downwards-sloping, equally golden feathers, which took the place of their outer ear. Combined with birdlike feet with scales reaching up her shins made it clear she was an avian variety of beastfolk.”

Ignoring the bile rising in my throat over that horrible description, a few implications surfaced from that information. First, the body was Ripple’s- but the hair color and some minor parts of the facial structure more closely matched Alex’s. Second, I was likely in Ripple's world. Lastly, I needed clothes other than the hospital gown I was wearing.

The doctors easily accepted when I said everything looked fine, and were even the first to mention the clothes issue. My old clothes were a burnt and bloody mess when I got here- most definitely unsalvageable, especially since they had been incinerated as a bio-hazard as was standard practice with bloody rags. The term ‘biohazard’ was new as far as some of my memories knew, but those from the other world recognized them- bringing up the possibility of others like me. Getting back to the topic at hand, they had standard uniforms for students available which would be delivered as soon as I signed some release papers.

The outfit consisted of undergarments, a blouse, a vest, a skirt, and some shoes and socks- luckily long enough to cover my scaled legs- in the grey and blue of The Unified Academy of Duransburg’s colors. Overall it looked nice and very typical- although I would have preferred pants.

From my memories of the era and area, typical noble ‘purity’ BS was discouraged officially but still in vogue- and the relatively new races of beastfolk didn’t have any representation in those circles. While my heritage hadn’t been that big of a problem in the past- very few families had golden hair, and only one had golden hair and golden eyes. Now, if they were some lesser-known merchant family or a respected family of tradesmen, that wouldn’t be a problem. ‘Luckily’ for me, the family with these traits was the Aventi’s- a famously traditionalist family of nobles. I’d already have (and be) a social problem if recognized as a human bastard of the family, but if I was also a beastfolk- those problems would be quickly ended to say the least.

Thus begins day one of Operation ‘I’m a Human, What Are You Talking About?’ Step one was dredging up knowledge of how to braid hair, and after many attempts, I was able to just about hide my ears using some. Other steps to this plan could be determined once I was out of the clinic and back in my attic room.

As I passed through the waiting room, I made sure to check the calendar: Pentday, Quatember 35th, 673 CE. This gave me a grand total of today and tomorrow before The Academy started teaching for the year and the inevitable mess I know I’ll face.
