Chapter 5: Chapter 4: Success and Failure

Gradually, Kay began filling in the little bubbles on the answer sheet.

Once he reached the last twenty questions, he decided to leave all of them blank.

I only need the top 10, right? There doesn't seem to be a bonus for reaching higher.

He stared up at the clock as it slowly ran down. One hour left. Fifteen minutes left. Ten minutes left. Five minutes left. One minute left. Ten seconds left. 

Three seconds left. Two seconds left. One second left.

"Pens down."

The entire hall was filled with the dense sighs of the students. Examiners walked around, collecting all of the answer sheets. After almost ten minutes, every single piece of paper was collected. Students looked around in anticipation, trying to gauge how well others did.

Eventually, everyone was dismissed, and the swarm of people began making their way out of the exam hall. Kay made his way outside and breathed in the fresh, warm air. It was a nice day; aside from a few clouds in the sky, it was perfect.

"Kay, how'd you go on the exam?"

Kay was once again met by the pleasant, comforting voice of Shiina.

"I did alright."

"Ah, only alright? Ehe, let's see who gets a better score!"

"Sure, I suppose."

Everyone was technically allowed to go home. But like most of the students, Kay and Shiina made their way into the extravagant library of Elaine Academy. The two of them found a seat on some playfully colourful couches, making themselves comfortable on it.

An hour passed.

The library was practically dead silent, not only because it was a library but because there would be a possibly life-changing message that was going to appear on their phones. Precisely as the time hit 3 pm, a notification appeared on every single student's phone.

Kay looked down at his.

Congratulations, you have been selected to attend Elaine Academy in 2028. Further details about your examination results and other information are below.

Well, that was about the result I expected. However, I might have scored a little too high. I was hoping to at least stay discrete to some extent.

Peeking over his shoulder, Shiina was trying to get a glimpse of his phone. The text was just slightly too small for her to read from that distance. Her hair ended up flowing all over Kay's neck, making it pretty hard for him to ignore her. Eventually, she gave up and just asked him directly.

"So... what did you get?" she asked confidently.

He brought his phone up to her.

Suddenly, she froze in shock as she read the message.

"No... way... you actually managed to beat me?!" 

"What did you get?"

Shiina hesitantly passed her phone to Kay.

"That's not bad."

She pouted.

"It's fine! I wasn't trying that hard today."

"That's fair."

The two of them made their way to the printer through the large crowd of students who were all scrambling to compare results. Shoving their way through the horde, Kay and Shiina printed out their admission forms. They couldn't help but overhear the mumbles of excitement around them.

"...I'm only ranked #119? There's got to be a mistake!"

"...At least you got in! My parents are going to kill me. I've been getting tutored for over a year."

"...Haa, I got in the top 50!"

A few moments later, the printer spat out two sheets of paper. After filling them out, the two of them made their way to the administration. Shiina walked in first, handing her form to the staff member.

"Thank you, all of you should be receiving another email soon."

"Ah, another email? What's it for?"

"You'll be getting temporary dorm room allocations and details about your physical examination."

With that, they made their way back to the library.

In unison, Kay and Shiina received another message.

Elaine Academy Administration

Well done on securing a spot in Elaine Academy in 2028. You will temporarily be given a dorm room until the physical examinations are finished. After that point, you will be split based on your rank.

Your Temporary Dorm Room: #32 - Boys

Physical examinations will be undergone in two days. Until then, feel free to explore the school or stay with your family.

Ah, I guess that's where I'll be staying.

"Do you have a family of any sort?" asked Kay.

"Me? Well... I've heard the facility talking about my sister, although I don't have any idea who she is."

"Oh, so you'll be staying in your dorm then?"

"Nah, I think I'll stay in yours till night. I have to keep an eye on you after all~"

"Are you sure you have to go that far? Aren't you worried?"

"Worried? Worried about you attacking me?" she giggled, "I know I'm pretty, but I can defend myself. You don't want to test me."

"Hm."

Completely ignoring the girls' dormitory building, Shiina followed Kay all the way through the halls, eventually making their way into his room. 

It was a small room with a single bed, a small bedside table and a large wardrobe. Everything was positioned so that there was lots of empty space, seemingly for the students to furnish themselves.

Kay lay down on the bed.

"Well, I'm going to have a nap now, so do whatever you want, I guess."

"Alright, I'll just rearrange your room then."

"I'm not sure how I feel about that, but I can't be bothered stopping you."
