The walk back to Biosphere Three was an incredibly long one for Alex. He ought to have been sprinting, especially with the words that Jenna ended with.

“It’s finally time, Alex. I want us to go all the way.”

By now, she was crying heavily, and Alex’s first inclination was to comfort her but Jenna leapt away from him like he was poison.

Jenna grabbed his clothes on the floor and flung them at him. “Get out!”

Alex dressed quietly. “I’m sorry, Jenna. I promise I never set out to hurt you.”

She buried her face in her hands. “How can I believe anything you say? Did I really mean nothing to you?”

“No! Can you just let me explain what happened?”

“Eck, no!” said Jenna, waving her hands. “The last thing I want to hear about is what you did with that slut. I’m done, Alex. Get out.”

“Jenna, listen to me—”

“Out!” she screamed. “Get out!”

There was nothing else left for him to do. Alex grabbed what little of his things that he could and made for the door while Jenna crashed against the bed, sobbing.

Looking back, it was one of the lowest points of his life, if not the lowest. He’d never felt like a bigger piece of shit, and now he’d hurt someone he loved beyond any meaningful repair.

He wanted to kick his own ass for what he did. He wanted to comfort Jenna in any way he could.

What he really wanted was a way to rewind time and turn Ellie down.

But what was done was done. Now he’d have to live with the consequences.

With a heavy sigh, Alex left the unit in Biosphere Three not knowing where to go. Going to Ellie’s was out of the question. He didn’t even want to see her right now. Annette’s didn’t seem plausible either, especially considering what had recently occurred between them. That really only left one option.

Alex trudged from Biosphere Three down the walkways to Biosphere Two, Seven, and then finally Eight. He knocked on the door once he was there, only to be surprised to see who answered.

It was Nikki.

When she saw the look on his face, she became immediately concerned. “Alex? What’s wrong? Are you okay?”

“Not really,” replied Alex. “Is Rick here?”

Nikki’s mouth twitched. “Not at that moment, but he should be back anytime. What do you need?”

“Honestly? A place to stay for a couple days. I hate to impose on you and I can try somewhere else if that’s not possible—”

“You can stay with us,” said Nikki, giving him a stern but sympathetic look. “Let me guess. You too?”

Alex nodded, knowing exactly what she was getting at.

Nikki gave him a look like a mother scolding a philandering son. “Come in. I’ll let Rick know you’re here.”
