Chapter 219 Sweet & Sour Pork with Pineapple (k)

Translated by Gumihou

Edited by Gumihou

The food in the box was the result of her experiments from that afternoon and she wanted Lao Er to try it. It was filled with spiritual powers, but whether Lao Er’s body could contain it was another matter altogether. Lao Er’s Cultivation was very slow, she could stuff as much Spiritual energy into his food and feed him all kinds of medicinal extracts and even gather martial arts techniques for him, however, the one to contain and transform those Spiritual powers into a stable Cultivation base was still up to him.

It could take him years, or even decades to improve. Or perhaps he would continue to struggle the rest of his life, but, as long as one is still alive hope will never die!

As long as a person refuses to give up and continue to Cultivate, they may eventually discover the secret to their own Cultivation.

That evening, Lao Er and Xiao Shu came home under the guiding light of the moon.

When Lao Er returned to his room, he saw a food box on his table. Warmth suffused his heart. His sister was truly too good to him! He knew that Sister had been helping him on the sly, refusing to give up. On his side… well, Lao Er clenched his fists. Sister put in so much work for him and yet, and yet he could not give her any concrete proof of his ability…

He wondered what Sister brought for him.

Lao Er uncovered the food box and immediately noticed something different about the food. It was glowing. It looked very Spiritual and filled with some kind of mystical energy. [1] The faint glow was especially obvious at night.

Hands trembling, Lao Er lowered the cover and picked the chopsticks set by the plate. He sat down and picked up a piece of the glowing food. He took a bite and blinked at the powerful energy surging through his veins. The Spiritual powers flared up in his body, but, dissipated just as quickly. It just… escaped through the pores on his skin and disappeared into the air.

Undaunted, he ate a second piece, then a third, but the result was the same. Finally, there were only two pieces left. Lao Er looked at the final two pieces of meat and lowered his chopsticks. Fingers trembling, he packed up the food box and left his room.

He stopped before Xiao Shu’s door and knocked softly.

Xiao Shu opened the door quickly enough. [2] Lao Er saw her poked her little tongue out to lick some sauce away and saw the detritus of a meal on her table. Her eyes were wide with surprise to see him.

Lao Er handed her the food box, “This is for you, I’m not hungry.”

“Ah? But I have my portion…” Xiao Shu blinked, finally noticing something off with Lao Er. “What’s wrong? Is something the matter?”

Lao Er, who had been holding his emotions in check suddenly felt a little helpless at the sight of her gentle eyes. Impulsively, he said, “Come talk with me,”

“Alright,”

“Let’s go to the roof,”

“Alright, Let me pack up my food. We can have a picnic up there.”

Neither were particularly loud, but there was really no need for subterfuge. Aside from Shiyu who was experimenting in the kitchen, they were the only two other people in the house.

Shiyu heard them whispering before moving up the stairs. She was concerned, of course, but elected not to bother them in the end. She busied herself until midnight before finally entering the Saint’s Dwelling to look for some suitable precious herbs for the next phase of her cooking.

The first thing she did was look at the blackened bit of vine she had randomly stuffed in her garden. It had sprouted.

Shiyu scratched her head, why only just sprouted?

She was so used to plants growing and maturing literally overnight that this was a genuine curiosity. This was especially true for mundane seeds and plants like pumpkin and watermelons. Her little patch was already filled with flowers, she expected to find mature fruits by tomorrow at the latest.

But this? This little vine thing merely sprouted a little bud after all this time, which made her suspect that it must be some kind of a spiritual plant. After some thought, Shiyu brought a cup of Spring Water over and poured it over the sprout. The sprout grew larger before her eyes, expanding into long vines and unfurling leaves.

Encouraged, Shiyu got a bucket of Spring of Life water and poured that over the plant. It grew into a vine with a green supple body patterned with a trace of gold. The leaves opened up and fell off as soon as they mature, consuming very little energy.

Shiyu was curious to see if it would bear fruit and brought buckets of water over. However, though the vine kept growing longer and longer, to the point that it was as long as three people standing on top of each other, not a single flower or fruit was to be seen. Shiyu was about to bring more water over when she saw that it grew another small sprout near the base…

“… …” Shiyu decided to cut off a piece of the plant and show it to Elder Liu. She grabbed the flexible looking vine and pulled. However, no matter how hard she pulled it refused to move. Instead, tiny barbs stabbed into her hand like little hooks. Her hands became numb and painful. Flexing her hands, Shiyu finally got Supreme Indifferent out and cut [3] the mature vine off.

The vine was not particularly thick, only about as wide as her thumb and felt quite heavy. Not wanting to deal with the barbs anymore, Shiyu got a cloth bag and roughly shoved the thing inside before making her way to the Treasure Pavilion.

Although it was in the middle of the night, the Treasure Pavilion was still opened to the students. Day or night, students could visit the Treasure Pavilion to exchange for items. Shiyu opened the door to the Pavilion and found Elder Liu snoozing at his table. She paused, staring at this leisurely old man.

Old Sir, if you want to enter Divine Transformation realm, surely you can’t be this lazy?

Still, it was none of her business.

Shiyu coughed, made quite a bit of noise as she came over to the counter. She placed the cloth bag onto the counter and said, “Elder Liu, I trouble you to have a look at this thing for me. Do be careful, it has some barbs on it. My hands are still bleeding from this wretched thing.”

Elder Liu’s eyes slowly opened. He looked into the bag and studied the vine for a while. Then, he turned and searched through his drawers for a book. He brought it, as well as a magnifying glass and compared the vine with the details in the book.

“Where did you get this? It’s been a long while since I’d even heard of the Demonic Vine,” he said as he continued to study the vine.

“Demonic Vine? What is it used for?”

“It has no particular use. It just likes to snatch Spiritual aura from other living creatures. If this plant is found growing among other plants, other sentient plants will try to kill it. That’s why it’s pretty rare to see one, let alone in such a wonderful condition.”

Shiyu’s face suddenly froze. She had just… wasted buckets of [4] Spring Water on a weed?!

“Thank you, elder!” Shiyu grabbed the Demon Vine and ran off to a place where no one was looking and vanished into her Saint’s Dwelling.

She quickly rushed over to the area where the Demon Vine was planted and was relieved to find that the bud had not changed. If this thing actually grew and suck away all the vitality of her medicinal plants, she will really cry, ah!

Shiyu was this close to pulling the plant out and burning it to ash when she stopped herself. Though she hated the idea of having a power-sucking plant, it’s still a living thing that exists naturally in this world. After some thought, she dug the bud out and placed it in a pot. Then, she moved the pot into the furthest corner of the space. This place was fairly rich with spiritual powers, surely it would be alright?

She’ll just… have to keep an eye on it. Who knows, it might be useful in the future?

From now on, she had better not carelessly plant things she found on the ground in this space. Otherwise, if she happened to plant a more proactive spiritual devouring plant… eight lifetimes of blood would not be able to wash away her regrets.

As for the mature vine, Shiyu ended up placing it in the living room. As long as it doesn’t touch any soil, it couldn’t grow or survive, right? [5] She’ll think of a way to deal with it later, maybe Elder Liu would want it. She might even get some CP points out of this weed.

She was busy cooking in the kitchen when Feng Luo wandered back and found the Demon Vine. “Hey, who’s is this?”

[5] Shiyu made some noises from the kitchen. So, Feng Luo came in with the bag of vine, “Really? What are you going to do with it?”

[5] “… I might exchange it for something at the Pavilion,” she said vaguely.

[5] “Really? Can I have it?”

[5] Shiyu finally looked at Feng Luo, who was clutching the bag close to his chest.

[5] “… sure,”

[Gumihou: Changed the ending from “‘You can take it if you like,’ it’s not edible anyway” because it’s kind of anti-climatic. Also, the different ending reflects the next chapter.]

[1] Changed Detail for Logistic Purpose: Originally, it was ‘even though it’s night, he could still see the glow’

Er, I don’t know about you, but glowing things are kind of more obvious in the dark? There’s a reason why we don’t take a boat up river to see fireflies during the day.

[2] Added More Detail for Embellishments: Give a bit more detail than ‘Xiao Shu seems to be eating too’

[3] Changed Details for Logistic Issues: Math!!! In the original text, Shiyu said the vine was all of ‘1 meter long’. You know, the one that had grown up to about three person’s height? I guess three San Pang’s height??!

Consistency! Consistency!

… it’s 3 meters long in chapter 220…

[4] Original text was Shiyu moaning about having ‘planted a weed in the Saint’s Dwelling!’, but I do believe the wasted Spring Water should be more concerning since it implied both danger to the precious dwelling and a waste of the precious water.

[5] Added Details to Explain the Vague: Why would Shiyu leave the Demon Vine in the living room? Oh, for Feng Luo to find? Thank you, author, but can’t you give Shiyu a better reason to leave it there? Like, I don’t know keeping it sell it to Elder Liu or something?
