Jakarta
19 August 1962

The capital city of the Republic of Indonesia was in a state of confusion. Many government officials didn't understand what was actually happening. Since the loss of contact to the rest of the world on 16 August, all planes and ships they sent responded with the same answer: there was nothing in the former location of Northern Borneo, Malaya, Philippines, and Australia. At last, only Dutch New Guinea remains.

"With all respect, we would be screwed if we didn't do something, the time was starting from tomorrow to the end of September!" The Deputy Prime Minister/Coordinating Minister, and also as Minister of Income, Payment and Oversight, Notohamiprodjo warned everyone.

All of them know that the Indonesian economy is not in a good state. Especially after they know that the inflation is already reaching 156%, while PDB per Capital are -3%!

Soekarno, though, always didn't care about that until now. The President of Indonesia and the Great Commander of the Revolution didn't know how to handle this situation, like everyone else. The only thing that came out from his mouth was, "We need to be self-reliant!"

It's not a bad idea, and seems to not be an impossible option since Soekarno has been doing some programs since the late 1950s for that. But, the Minister of State Budget Affairs, Arifin Harahap, has a worried face.

"With all respect, looking at the current situation, it seems that the state budget may not be sufficient."

Some of the Ministers nodded in agreement. Since Soekarno’s programs were too ambitious, it's highly likely some would have ended up abandoned for some years due to lack of funding. But, Soekarno doesn't seem to care.

"If the state cannot give the funds, then the public would! We just need to announce that the country needs their help, then, they will come in droves to help their country."

It's honestly a stupid idea, since most of the Indonesians are living in poor condition. They didn't understand what was in Soekarno's mind. But, they didn't want to make the President angry. So all of them remained silent.

"Alright, it seems that it's already time. Dismissed!" Soekarno ordered, ending the meeting.

"So, the reconnaissance still didn't result in anything." Said the Minister of National Police, Soekarno Djojonegoro when he and one of the other Ministers walked out from the Merdeka Palace to the parking lot.

"Well, yes. Also, don't you think that it's very weird to think about it again. Only the Dutch and us are on here? " The Minister of the Navy asked.

"Of course. Well, something was wrong here. Like, we lost contact with our diplomats overseas, including Adam Malik who is still in New York. Oh yeah, the Soviet also in here if I remember correctly," Soekarno Djojonegoro answered.

"Yeah, the Soviets are in here too." The Minister of the Navy nodded.

"Martadinata, I have a question."

"Yes, what is it?" The Minister of the Navy, Raden Eddy Martadinata asked.

"What about the Soviet crews, did they do something yet?" Djojonegoro asked.

"No. They are still in their barracks."

"Okay. That is good news."

When they finally arrived at the parking lots, their driver was already waiting for them. Djojonegoro then gave him a farewell, "See you at the next meeting!"

Martadinata nodded. Then, he entered his car.

"Where to sir?" His driver asked.

"The usual place."

"Understood."

When the car passed the Palace gate, a minister looked at it. It was the Minister of Defense, also acting as the Minister of Army. After he cannot see the car anymore, he looks at the sky, an empty sky with no clouds at all, only blue sky and sun.

"I wonder what lies beyond our plane and ship range. Maybe it's time to use it."

---

Somewhere in the city of Jakarta, there are two housewives walking towards a building, then joining the queue to get a ration of food. They can see that the civil servant has started to distribute it, so they arrive in time. But, since the queue was so long, they decided to chat.

"Is there any news from your son in Czechoslovakia?" Asked one of the housewives.

"No. Last time, Joko said that he would go to a city called Dresden in East Germany to visit his friends that studied there. How about your son Inem?"

"He told me that his studies in the Soviet Union are already finished, and he would come home today. He probably is on the plane carrying him home." The housewife called Inem answered.

"Good for you. My son will go back home next year."

"Ah, I just remembered about this, why are scholarships from the communist countries so popular recently?" Suminem asked.

"I don't know, maybe it's because of the PKI."

"Hmm, maybe."

When the conversation ended, they were already near the civil servant. After a man gets his ration, it's Inem's turn to get his part, followed by Ajeng. After receiving their part, they quickly walked back home.

Surabaja
20 August 1962

The coastal city of Surabaja, an important trade city and a naval base for the Indonesian Navy, additionally a Soviet squadron too for a while.

Near the harbor, a submarine can be seen flying a flag that has a red star and red hammer and sickle on a white background with blue stripes on the bottom part. Standing on the conning tower was Captain 2nd Rank Alexander Alexandrovich Kodes, the captain of S-290. He was looking at the city of Surabaja with a pissed face.

"I swear, I will slap the Indonesian soldier who gave that information to us!" Said the Submarine officer.

"Calm down, we don't want to start a conflict with our allies, or potential allies." Said the Political Commissar who understands why he got angry.

"I know but, this soldier sent us to the wrong side! Instead of giving coordinates to the allied ships, they sent us to the Dutch destroyer squadron instead!"

The Political Commissar then takes a breath, before exhaling it. This is not the first time that Indonesian reconnaissance gave them the wrong coordinates. Make him wonder, did the Indonesian crew really that worse or it's their instructor that did not teach them right. Probably the former since the Soviet instructors were quite professional and experienced.

"Well, at least we will go home soon, comrades."

"Yeah, you are right."

The submarine then docks on the piers after a while. Captain Kodes and the Political Commissar then walked down, greeted by the squadron commander, Rear Admiral Efim Ivanovich Medvedev.

"Sadly, I have bad news for all of you." Medvedev said with a grim face, after the formal greetings.

"Sir, is it about that we wouldn't be assigned to a nuclear submarine?" Kodes asked.

Medvedev understood why Kodes asked that question. It's because the Soviet Premier, Nikita Khrushchev himself already promised that the crew of this squadron would be assigned to a nuclear submarine if they fought and survived the war. Since the war between Indonesia and the Netherlands was avoided by the New York Agreement, the chance was turned into ashes. But, it's not that.

"No. The bad news is, we lost any form of communication with Moscow. Our ambassador to Indonesia, Nikolai Mikhailov also has confirmed it, he also lost contact with Moscow, the other ambassadors from Warsaw Pact also told the same, losing contact with Moscow and their government. Even the Indonesian government itself."

"Did… did the Third World War has been started?" Asked the Political Commissar with a serious face.

"No Igor, it's not. I heard from an Indonesian naval officer that they cannot locate all of their neighboring countries anymore, they are all disappearing but the Dutch New Guinea."

Both Kodes and Igor were confused by the information they just received, including some of the S-290 crews who heard it. The news then soon spread across the entire submarine.

"Yes, I know it's confusing but, it's what it's. What we can do is wait for other news from the Embassy and the Indonesian Government itself. Dismissed!"

When they were about to go to their post, suddenly, Medvedev stopped them.

"I forgot to tell you two this. But, an officer from the Air Forces that trained the Indonesian pilots told me, the Indonesian had found an unknown landmass on the southwest. And, they found a dragon."

"What? That's impossible since dragons are a mythical creature, they must be drunk!" Igor exclaimed.

"I know, but one of our pilots that trained the Indonesian pilot also had met a dragon on the south of Java island. The news has spread around the barracks."

"Can we trust it?" Kodes asked.

"Yes. As much as I don't want to tell it, but I must tell another one."

Kodes and Igor waited for what Medvedev would say.

"It seems like we are no longer on earth." Medvedev said with a serious face, signaling that he was not joking.

-----

The news took them completely off guard. As they were already thinking that they would go back to their home, it was unacceptable that they were stranded in this country. Not a bad country and friendly, at least.

Captain Kodes, in his room remembering a time before he was sent to Indonesia. In Vladivostok to be exact.

.........

"What do you think about this?" asked the S-237 Commander, when we went down to the piers from the headquarters squadron.

"What do I need to think about? We are military people," Sasha said. "Where do you think they will send you?"

"Analyzing everything I have heard now, given the currently increasing ties between the Pacific Fleet and the Indonesian Navy, I can assume that I am being sent there. But why? As it is said, I will come there and I will find out the reason." I expressed my assumption.

"You're probably right. Everything that I manage to find out about your campaign, I will tell you, but for now, pretend that nothing happened and mask your work as long as possible. "

"Understood. Also, when I am back, we will go to your house again like during our childhood times, can we? "

"Haha, yes yes, I can take care of that. Just, make sure you come back to us. " Ivan said.

"Of course, I will come back. Who do you think I am? "

"Alright, we will wait for your return then. " Sasha said while putting his hands on my shoulder.

.......

Kodes put his right hand on his forehead, then went down to his eyes before shaking his head slowly.

"Sorry, I couldn't return to you all. "
