On a distant world as a few mourned the saint’s sudden coma, others started to hear the saint´s voice clearly, one by one. With angelic sounds, even though it was devoid of my usual faked emotions, the system borrowing my voice was introduced to Solaris, signalling the start of a new era.

The era of the saint. An era, that could only be ended by the saint herself.

At first, there was only confusion throughout the world. Where did this voice come from? What would it mean for society? All these questions were unanswered for the time being but even then, a strange calmness soon settled in as the different species started to realise just how beneficial the system was.

Harpies, now dominating the lake I had emptied, learned the skill ‘Fly’ enabling them to train their flight and swoosh through the air like never before. Elven warriors had their bow accuracy increased nearly instantly and some were even able to shoot their arrows faster, something that shouldn’t be possible with the same bow. The system made the impossible possible.

Human mages could use spells more easily as long as they fulfilled the mysterious prerequisites. Warriors gained more strength in a split second with the introduction of the system and were able to use more force. The intelligent species of Solaris basically evolved over night becoming much more powerful in the process.

But it didn´t end there.

The system, based entirely on the gods’ imagination, allowed the intelligent races to level up, further increasing their stats and specialising in their respective fields. Mages learned more powerful spells, archers fired further, and close combatants started to cut trees apart. In short, the system introduced to the world of Solaris allowed the races to break through their limits.

After the initial phase of chaos followed a few years of peace and prosperity for everyone as the two major players on the continent were peaceful for the first time in history thanks to a certain saint.

But then, the human mages noticed something.

Their spells were more powerful than expected. Surely, the system played a huge role in that, but the spells increased in power even afterwards without the mage levelling up. In the beginning a simple lightning bolt failed to reach beyond a few metres of range, but this range increased over time because the mana density in the air increased slowly … and with it, the mana surrounding all life.

Thus, the mana sickness travelled through the lands of the Landria continent, infecting intelligent and less intelligent races alike. Most importantly though, every place was affected, without exception. From the population centres of the human lands to the elven forest and into the depth of my old prison. Nobody was safe from it.

It was a pandemic and with it, the great dying began, signalling that the times of peace were over once more. A new enemy had appeared on the world stage in a place where the mana sickness was much more prevalent than anywhere else. Something never seen before appeared. Something that frightened the humans.

Instantly, the two kingdoms sprang into actions as green monsters with pointy ears and red eyes, later named goblins, appeared. They were the first one to worry the kingdoms, and probably the peskiest race of all. Even though they were weak, they spread around like rats in the forests of the world. They were hunted by the elves right away, but the humans didn´t have that luxury as they disbanded too much of their army to keep costs down. Sadly, as soon as the threat of the elves was disbanded, the nobles chose to get rid of their standing armies for the most part, depriving themselves of the strength they desperately needed.

As such, humans did what they could do best. To profit from the mess. Former soldiers, fools and whoever else needed quick money, appeared all around the country and started battling these monsters … naturally for a small change.

Citizens put together their money at first to pay these people but as the prices for such services skyrocketed, the villagers rather fled towards the cities which could pay for a watch. As the countryside got more and more deserted and cities filled up, these warriors needed to find other sources of income.

Which they did. Some monsters had rather interesting organs or extremities. The goblins for example had very special ears which could be used in alchemy recipes. After a few years of hunting these monsters though, it were the merchants who ripped off these warriors which they certainly didn´t like. But sadly, there were too many willing to do the job. The sheer supply for these warriors who didn’t have a village to protect, based on the fact that most couldn’t find a job in the army, outweighed the demand for them by a wide margin.

But still, these warriors didn´t give up and rather formed a guild for themselves to do something about it. They named themselves adventurers afterwards because … well, one started it and the others didn´t have any better name for themselves.

And soon, protecting the rest of the villages, gathering resources and killing these monsters became so institutionalised, that the merchants had no other choice but to ask the adventurer guild, rather than the adventurers themselves. Thus, they agreed on certain prices, which even enabled the adventurer guild to hunt the other monsters which weren’t that useful for alchemy, but still posed a threat to humanity.

And thereafter, everyone lived a happy life … except me, because I was the one shouldering the burden of the system. Like a tick, it stuck to my soul and refused to let go. But the system itself was the least of my worries as I still had to deal with Aska.
