“Well … that was odd.” Hannah said behind me, leaning against a nearby tree and seething her sword again.
“Yeah. I’m kind of surprised that worked so well.” It was a bit too easy to convince Nezar to break with the demon king.
“Right? And besides, I never thought of you as a great negotiator.” She said which was a little mean in my humble opinion.
“What are you talking about?” I thus asked and though about all the times I had managed to negotiate with someone. There was the king for example who married me … well, he didn’t have any other choice, but still.
“Remember when you murdered a whole race just so that you could flood a river? Or how you threatened the elves with mutual destruction if they should ever attack humans again?” Right, there were these incidents as well. But threatening someone with certain death was also a way of negotiating. And these beavers … let’s be frank, they didn’t deserve it any other way.
“Well, it’s hard to argue against that. But still … why did he accept so quickly?” I mumbled quietly.
“My guess is that he wanted to betray them anyways. And you gave him the perfect opportunity to do so.” That could be. But that explanation was boring!
“Could be … eh, whatever. We have to kill him in the future anyway.” I said quietly and stretched my arms.
“Oh?” Hannah asked surprised.
“Once he finds out I have no intention of opening up the gates to purgatory, he will fight me with all he has. But until then, we have time to find a way to beat him.” I answered truthfully and began walking back towards Hannah.
“Wait … you weren’t sure you would be victorious?” She questioned me in disbelief.
“If he was using ancient magic, it would take me an hour to kill him. And during that time, Louis would have died for sure.” It was not a question if I could kill him, that was for sure. But I also didn’t want to underestimate him at all, so I presumed he could mess up everything I had durning that short hour. “Well, let’s not think too much about this right now.” I said and patted her shoulder a little. “Thanks for coming with me.”
“I see what you are doing. But we didn’t kill the guy responsible for emptying the mine, we didn’t kill any undead and we didn’t have fun at all!” Carefully, I lifted my hand of her shoulder again and made sure the distance between us was a little bit more than usual.
“But … I think I made a great joke. You know, when he asked me how we go here?”
“Okay, I have to give you that. But otherwise, this was a disaster! And now, we have to bring Louis back with us? How are we supposed to do that?”
“We’ll just beat him until he wakes up.” I said and walked over to the collapsed Louis. First, I made sure he sat upright, leaning against a nearby tree and then, I pinched his cheeks a little.
“Louis? Louis?” After several attempts, he finally woke up and looked into my eyes confused.
“Lucy? Where is … where is Ellie?” And for a second, I thought he wanted to ask where the necromancer was. Well, his childhood friend apparently ranked higher on his worry list.
“Safe and sound inside the town. We’ll explain everything later but for now, we should head back as well.” I explained soothingly and helped him up with my hand.
“The necromancer?” Louis asked finally.
“He fled.” Hannah answered in my stead as I wanted to avoid standing out at this point. “Took me some time to find him though.”
“Okay.” He said and steadied himself using my shoulder. I honestly doubted he was that spent, but I also didn’t want to complain. In the end I allowed him to do as he wished and thus, we proceeded to walk back to Atlantis, only guided by the stars and a few corpses on the way.
As we got closer to the town though, the corpses increased considerably until it turned into a whole field. What stunned me the most though was how they got onto the walls. They apparently build a little mountain of corpses, leaning onto the wall and used that as some kind of makeshift stairs. I was honestly quite impressed about this way of using dumb creatures.
Pinching my nose close, we walked through the field of corpses careful not to trip over anything. It wasn’t too long for anyone to notice us, especially as we got closer to a huge pile of bodies which was on fire.
“Stop right there! Who a- oh, it’s you. So you found the boy you were searching for?” One of the guards in charge of burning the corpses asked right away.
“And I forced that necromancer to flee.” Hannah admitted and smiled wryly, but also quite exhausted.
“So it was you who saved us all? May the saint be with you!” The guard said praisingly and bowed deeply in front of her.
“I’m sure she is.” Hannah commented so dryly that I nearly broke out in laughter. “Is there any help you need, or can I look after my students?”
“They are all alive and well. Some even deserve awards if you ask me. Especially this girl with the barriers saved us, but the boy who brought down the rhino wasn’t half bad either.” I immediately had some suspicions who these two were, but didn’t voice them directly. “Imagine being so young and able to use chant-less magic!” Chant-less? These two never showed any chant-less magic at all.
“Excuse me. Did you just say chant-less?” I asked in a hurry.
“Yeah?” The guard said and looked at me a bit confused.
“Hmm … never mind.” I said and dragged Louis past that guard right away. The worst that could happen was that Ellie and Louis realised Schwarz was one of them, which would ruin my plans a la divide and conquer.
As the gates were already open and unprotected, we could easily go in and headed straight for our hotel. In front of it, we found a visibly exhausted Ellie in front of the entrance.
“Louis! You are alive!” She said and stood up from the wooden chair she must have retrieved from the inside.
“I am. And I’m sorry. I should have noticed it wasn’t you I was spending my time with.” Louis said, which made me doubt right away that it was a smart idea to tell him everything that happened so far on our way back.
“What are you talking about? That person completely fooled me as well. Until I was told that Lucy was with Luna and the others during the time I was attacked, I believed it was her … even though Lucy would never hurt others.” Ellie said and hugged Louis tightly.
“Totally right.” I said in regards to not hurting anyone. That was totally not my thing.
“I’m just glad you are alright.” Ellie said and started to cry a little.

“I am thanks to Hannah. Otherwise, this impostor and the necromancer would have gotten me for good.” Louis said, wiping a single tear from Ellie’s cheek.
“That person promised to spare you!” She said angrily.
“Then he was lying.” Louis said and looked at Hannah, probably not entirely sure what to say. “We need to find that guy.”
“We already informed the guards about a potential shapeshifter.” Hannah said, looking at each one of us sternly.
“And you seriously believe they can do anything?” Who would think such a thing? The person was obviously with our school, so how would the guards even start to investigate considering we had less than two weeks left at Atlantis.
“No.” Hannah said plainly.
“Then we need to do something.” Louis explained which made it very clear what he wanted to do.
“It’s not the time for kids to play heroes.” Hannah answered a bit angrily. She was honestly right though. Going after an enemy you had no idea about alone was the worst thing you could possibly do. At least Hannah and I had some rough estimate what the necromancer could do considering the size of his forces.
“But w-“
“No but. You are thirteen and act like you need to save the world. Tone it done a little, otherwise there will be a day I won’t be able to save you.”
“I’m sorry to have troubled you.” He better be. Because of him, I had to deal with a necromancer now which was honestly not something I wanted to do.
“It’s not your fault … just make sure you don’t act recklessly in the future.” Hannah said concerned.
“I’ll try.” I’ll try? I’ll try? Did he even have any idea how much his value diminished for me because he acted so recklessly? That whole endeavour was honestly quite egoistic on his part. It was no wonder Hannah stared him down for a little while until she sighed and walked past them to get into the hotel.
“Are you alright?” I asked as the two didn’t want to stop hugging each other.
“… I’m getting expelled, won’t I?” Well, that was kind of to be expected. He already broke several rules just by going away from the group, but not notifying anyone what he had in mind was kind of over the top. In all fairness, the situation was a bit unusual, but I highly doubted the headmaster would care much about that.
“If I were the headmaster, you would be. But luckily I am not. You might have a little tiny chance of staying in school.” It was definitely more than a little chance. Once we talked to the headmaster, I was sure things would go well for Louis..
“I … I wouldn’t know what my family would do otherwise.” Oh? What would happen? A good old whipping maybe?
“I’m sure they won’t be too harsh on you.” I said while looking a bit worried about Louis.
“They definitely will be.” Or maybe we skip all this soft core bullshit and go directly to skinning him alive? I really wished I could watch him during that punishment.
“Is your father that harsh?” I always assumed the nickname ‘the foolish king’ must have come from somewhere. It weren’t his achievements in battle that gave him that nickname because frankly speaking, there were none. So it must have been something else. Maybe his raising methods were suboptimal?
“Not my father, but the other queens will come at me like a bunch of harpies once again.” Oh, right. There were these woman as well. A bunch of noble woman trying to get their son on the throne at all costs. Which also included bullying a boy who had no chance of ascending the throne at all, thanks to his lowborn mother.
“I’m sorry to hear that.” I said and patted his shoulders a little.
“It’s fine. I’ve come to live with it.” Poorly, I would say though. The other queens must have been the reason why he couldn’t buy anything himself and Luna, Ellie and I had to step in for everything he needed, including his clothing and meals.
“I see. Shall we go inside.”
“One second …”
“What is it?”
“Lucy … I know it’s hard to grasp for you, but someday we will fight the demon king. We are the only ones who can do so … and we might need you advice on that.”
“My advice? What for?”
“Who else we should take with us, where we should train and so on … I have thought long about this, but you seem to know more than you want to admit. Reading a biology book based on the glossary is just not normal. You must know so much and I want to tap into that knowledge.” Eww. She shouldn’t even start relying on me which would honestly feel plain disgusting. And moreover, she wouldn’t grow that much when she relied on me for the most part. Even though it was incredibly tempting to accept, I couldn’t. Not at this point.
“I’m sorry. But I can’t. I was asked by my sister to lock my knowledge away as much as possible. I hope you can understand.” I explained and looked down the the ground, hoping they would assume I wasn’t too happy either.
“No. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked you such an absurd question at all.” Ellie said and waved her hands in front of her.
“But … I am sure that I can help you someday.” I said and looked at her, and then at Louis with a smile on my face.
“Thanks.” Both of them said, one after another.
