Isabelle’s death was devastating for the whole student body and beyond. Fist of all, all the families who had connections into the academy got their children out as fast as possible, some even during the same night.
It was during the next homeroom the very next day I realised I had no reason to stay at the academy either. Luna was gone, Louis had no choice but to leave as well and Ellie was highly depressed. That was not the school life I had dreamed about, so Hannah’s announcement that all classes would be put on hold until the investigation was concluded was great to hear.
“Hey, Ellie. Do you need anything?” I asked after class was over and we were allowed do either head back into the dorms, or towards the entrance where we would be questioned by guards before being allowed to leave.
“No … I think I’ll ask my parents for a lodging in the capital …” Ellie said quietly.
“I could loan you a little.” I proposed and touched her arm gently. She was honestly more shocked than anyone else as she and Isabelle were great friends. They even shared their room in Atlantis which only deepened their friendship more.
“That would be nice … thank you.” Ellie said while I hugged her from the side.
“Whoever that did … we will find him.” I muttered quietly, attempting to cheer her up somewhat.
“It was Schwarz … wasn’t it?” She asked, not believing it herself while tearing up a little.
“I don’t believe he is capable of cold blooded murder. And I have talked to him. He didn’t seem to know what was going on as he was captured.” I said, faked tears streaming out of my eyes as well why Ellie weeped in my arms.
“I see…” She said crying loudly. I kept patting her back for a little while until she calmed down somewhat again.
“Alright. Hannah and I need to get going now.” I admitted and glanced towards Hannah, still waiting at the door for me while all other students had already left.
“Lucy?” Ellie asked as I let go of her.
“Yes?” I replied gently.
“Do you know a way to contact Louis? I doubt my letters will go through and I … I just can’t do this alone.” She said, already close to weeping once more.
“I see what I can do … can you tell Mr. Keineahnung your new address? He will give you the money as well.” I said and turned away from her already. It may have been a bit cold, but I seriously didn’t know what else to do.
“Sure …” She said, stopping her tears at the last second and waving towards us as Hannah and I left the room.
“So … you had around seven hours to come up with a plan.” Hannah said after we were out of the building and strolled towards a nearby parked red unmarked carriage.
“Have you ever caught a fish?” I asked, opening the doors for us and hopping inside the thankfully empty carriage.
“Yeah. I electrified a whole lake and we had plenty of fish afterwards.” She explained, closing the doors behind herself and sitting down opposite of me.
“I meant with something that is called an fishing rod.” I said, quite amused about her story.
“Sounds boring.” She said, which did anger me a little.
“Hey! That was my hobby for around ten years? Anyway, you never catch a fish without bait. You don’t know where they are, but you do know what they want.” For me who feared water, knowing so much about fishing was a miracle in itself.
“You told me last night that it was apparently a trap for us.” Hannah said, guessing that we were supposed to be the bait.
“Whoever that is, she wants us gone. But more than us, she wants to murder the special guests this planet houses.” I explained and grabbed the bench as we drove above a rather bumpy road, definitely not meant for carriages.
“With Louis, Ellie and Schwarz gone … Sofie? Albert?” Hannah asked, just before the door was opened and a guard checked who was inside. Without being questioned, the door was closed once more and we were allowed through the gate.
“I can tell that Sofie will use her time to tour the hospitals but Albert …” He made the perfect bait. “He will remain either here or ask Tom for a place to work.” Both options were optimal for us, with the former one my preferred choice because it put him even more in the limelight.

“Let’s just hope is isn’t killed in the next few days.” I muttered and massaged my temples as I got a bit of headache. “And that he really is her next target.” I muttered and looked out of the window a bit.
The city still looked quite lively out there, with a multitude of carriages scooting around, pedestrians on the walkway and even a few lower nobles walking their pets.
For them, it was just a single murder in a city where death was all too common. But for me, it was a more than difficult situation. It put me in front of a choice. Either to let go of Schwarz and select a new candidate to fight against the demon king, or to save him from certain doom which also came with the nasty side effect of telling the world I was back.
Closing my eyes a little and leaning my back against the seat, I thought about the options I had and growled angrily.
“Are you alright?” Hannah asked a bit concerned.
“No … let’s wait and see what Tom has to offer.” I said and looked outside the window once more. Mansions flew past us as my thoughts raced. Finding a replacement for Schwarz was hard. He had the perfect skill set to attack some on his own and didn’t need to rely on teamwork to be overly effective. But even in a team, he could do wonders … if he didn’t work against his teammates.
I needed another sword fighter who could stand on his own hand he needed to be better than Schwarz right away. Otherwise I wasn’t willing to take the risk of replacing Schwarz willy nilly.
As soon as the carriage stopped, still early in the morning, I hopped out of it and went straight for the entrance of Tom’s mansion. A butler soon guided us underground towards Tom’s working room.
He was visibly tired as we entered and yawned loudly before we could even say anything.
“Morning.” He said, sliding a bunch of documents over towards us.
“Still not accustomed to the sun?” I asked and sat down opposite of him. As I had turned him into a ghoul, he had the tendency of going to sleep whenever the sun came out, and this didn’t change much in his early days.
“Well, it’s better than going to sleep right away…” He said a bit disgruntled. “That’s everything we have put together about possible reincarnators we found. There may be more in hiding, but we did manage to find around six hundred of them based on their achievements alone.”
“That’s more than there should be.”
“I know. But distinguishing between a genius and someone who had been gifted by the gods is hard. Well, we could sort out around three hundred of them as they didn’t posses any special gift by using the list the church provided and added around thirty more who were too unsuspicious to be found by our means. To sum it up, we have found three hundred and thirty four possible reincarnators.” I really loved using the institutions I had under my control to the fullest. I wouldn’t be able to do this list on my own, not even in a hundred years, but my standing made it possible.
“So … you are probably searching for a replacement for Schwarz, but the ones who do have gifts with similar use cases are all quite weak …” It made sense that Schwarz was a lot stronger than these others. He already worked as an adventurer before, earning him a lot of levels in the process. The others simply lacked that, which was why I couldn’t help but frown as I went over the list myself.
“There are two candidates who might beat him in a sword fight, but … how can I say it? They aren’t easily manipulated. One is thirty three already, and the other one is … is a leader of a best man tribe.” Yeah, I could see why what would be troublesome. The older guy was problematic because he probably wasn’t easily moldable by my wishes, while the beast man was … there was written he had made all the woman in his tribe his wife.
“That’s disappointing. There are a few candidates which might come close level wise, but I don’t know their fighting style until I see it myself.” I said, going through the first few papers slowly.
“That guy who can see through any lie … kill him.” I said, which Tom directly noted quietly. “And this one here. Matt … I don’t want anyone with the ability to see who I had murdered. And Maurice … Luca, Greg …” I went through the complete list and picked out everyone that could become dangerous to me. Especially those who had a chance of guessing what my real goals were needed to be liquidated at some point. “Oh, and Pauline as well.”
“I’m not ordering the assassination of someone just because she has the name of my wife.” Tom said plainly and stared at me as if I started some petty argument.
“Why not? And she can … oh, see! She has a skill that allows her to find hidden treasures. That’s dangerous?” I asked and turned towards the last page. As I couldn’t see any dangerous skill on there, I slid everything back to Tom and leaned backwards a little.
“Ask the pope for a meeting. I see no other way but to save the idiot.” I concluded a bit unhappy. My dreamy days with Luna may be over after saving Schwarz, but I saw no other option.
“The pope doesn’t have the authority to free him though.” Tom said which directly earned him a deathly glare from me.
“I am aware.” I said and closed my eyes. “Time to change clothes…”
