Legendary monsters. A title given to monsters and monster girls that did not subscribe to the normal system in place to gauge the general power of all beings. Each has a combination of traits and abilities that far outstrip those in their similar level of power. The most famous or more accurately, the most infamous of them all are the dragons.
Every child that ever lived post the 'Great Collapse' know of the First Twilight, a dragon that turned the moon into a giant machine to absorb magic. An eclipse that turned the whole world dark for one day. During that day, the entire human civilization was reduced to a fourth as the very vital magic necessary to keep people alive was taken from any who did have enough power to resist.
Another legend though to a much lesser extent, another dragon existed in the same era known as the Breath of Decimation, whose breath could annihilate magic turning entire armies into a chain of living bombs as magic inside their bodies would ignite into pure force.
Needless to say after banishing both [demon kings] responsible for the 'Great Collapse' along with their entire armies a lot of laws were put into place regarding dragons. Because the nameless [heroes] responsible for the eventual victory also employed dragons they were not outright outlawed. Only [heroes] or those adjacent to them were allowed to employ dragons and any found otherwise were put to death quite quickly.
Sadly, that was not enough.
Why?
Like any other legendary, dragons never played by the rules. The moment they are born into the world, they gain an absurd amount of knowledge from a trait known as 'memory of the ancients' which any and every dragon can access and merely by existing passively put information into. That means that any dragon in existence can eventually find out how the First Twilight crafted her apocalyptic spell.
If that was not scary enough, they have a trait that allows them to store mana separate from one's normal reserves. This storage had an infinite capacity to store mana even if the conversation rate was absolutely horrendous and eventually could brute force any spell.
They were not glass cannons either. They were shapeshifters and had a monstrous form that looked like an enormous reptile with two massive wings and shimmering metallic scales. Their regenerative capability, physical defenses, and offenses were frankly unfair for a magic based-monster.
Somehow, reality decided they were still not powerful enough and granted them the ability to outright absorb magic out of anything and reflect magical effects at will. They can also 'eat' spells and immediately learn how to cast them because of a unique interaction with the memory of the ancients. Now just because they needed that little bit extra, they are also an aging monster variant. Monsters that get stronger the older they get.
That was somehow still not bad enough.
So, imagine a monster that moments after being born gains knowledge worth hundreds if not thousands of years of many different entities in an instant. To say that every dragon had a few screws loose would be putting it mildly.

Every known nation has a lot of instruments and studies dedicated to dragons and dedicated to dealing with these walking super weapons. Detecting them hit a wall that to this day researchers had yet to surpass. Their abilities allowed them to imitate any magical signature or create a magical dead zone if they so chose.
However, on the front of actually dealing with dragons, quite a bit was done. A whole classification of spell and item craft known as the dragon-slayer arts made specifically to counter dragons was invented and every major city has one 'dragon-slaying' unit stationed inside them. Most of the time, they are mercenaries for hire inside some of the more powerful dungeons to deal with dragon bosses but on the rare occasions a real dragon is spotted, their job is to annihilate them post-haste.
Thankfully, dragons like all legendary monsters can only appear as elite bosses or final bosses inside dungeons of a caliber that only [heroes] or tamers close to their level of strength is needed to deal with.
Because of their bad reputation and the fact every legendary monster girl is not as affected by the mental and emotional connections of the bond they are rarely taken in as tames.
Every [hero] has a minimum of one legendary monster under their employ, it is one of the requirements to be a [hero]. They become an equal that will not be as swayed as your other monster girls. Make no mistake, they love you just as much but are not so submissive as to reject their nature for your sake which is sometimes necessary to see something with more nuance, the [circle of heroes] at least believes so.
Dragons are one of the worst ones one can pick purely because of their unstable nature, even if they are one of the smartest beings that walk the material world. Add to that, you need to have a legendary before you become a [hero], and to legally own a dragon you need to be a [hero] and their availability in the market is next to zero.
Not entirely zero, much to the dismay of the [trials of taming] and the [circle of heroes]. Some exotic [collectors] still trade in them and being that they are essentially as powerful as [heroes] and have even deeper pockets than both of the organizations combined they are left to be. Though, the [collectors] tend to be very hush-hush about their dealings as general sentiment towards dragons has always been rock bottom even if in recent years it has become a tad laxer because of the natural passage of time.
Thankfully, [collectors] rarely deal with 'natural-born' dragons, instead preferring to evolve drakes, an extremely minor variant of dragons into dragons. Very specific 'rare drops' are required to turn drakes into dragons, all of which come from killing dragons. However, upon evolving and having their mind fucked by the onslaught of memories, [collectors] have discovered that they latch on to the bond to stay 'sane' becoming as obsessed as normal level 3 bonds even if the bond is level 1.
Our protagonist is simply stuck with a weapon of mass destruction who is obsessed with him and is as mentally stable as uranium. What possibly could go wrong?
