Chapter 1: Success over tragedy

"Ma'am! We have detected an Anomaly exceeding 50lins from the eastern lake side!"

"Orders please"

said two twins wearing a military uniform draped in many medallions, over to their superiors who sat just behind the two crossed leg as she looked at a map the size of a whole table.  Etched onto the table itself. the map size of a whole table had small miniature structures above it's flat surface, and a dot being relayed in about a tenth of a minute.

Under the table was a ton of moving parts and gears all moving in bits or sections as small mechanical arms from within moved the red dot over at the lake side of the map. A magnetic connection was formed from the piece above and the arm from below, giving it the ability to move despite being separated by an inch or two thick table.

"I know i know, Evacuate the citizens near the area all at once and send in the suppression troops. Equip them with sufficient weapons, we don't want to skimp over this one being so near us"

She ordered, waving her left arm as the twins in their desks, followed to her orders. Immediately, both of them smashed a section within their tables as a funnel tube made out of brass popped up from within their desks.

Several of the gauges installed on their dash boards turned and the graphs bounced up and down. The imminent danger was slowly turning up all the valves from within their dashboards as they spoke through the brass funnel acting as a speaking tube to relay words straight from the top brass.

"{ Attention all personnel, This is Stage 3 scenario, we repeat, this a Stage 3 scenario! all personnel at their battle stations!} "

"Deploy 'that'"

ordered the woman.

After both twin said their parts, as from the outlets of these tubes were several stations from across the city all going out in different directions at many locations. at the same time, the troops stationed freely going on with their time all hastened their steps as a red light alarm  spun clockwise to indicate an alert.

"Go go go! Move out!"

"{ We have detected an Anomaly at the Eastern Lake side, north of block 23. Permission from the commander to deploy with the 'Rail Cannon'}"

from within the command room.

"That's just being unreasonable! Commander, that thing is still in it's experimental stage! who knows what will happen!"

a man in a long white trench coat wearing eye glasses spoke up to the Woman siting with her legs crossed. yet despite the man's persuasion, the woman sat without speaking a word as she read through a piece of paper.

"In Theory it should work right? You said it here yourself"

she replied, closing the document cover as she handed it back to the man in a white trench coat. in reality, while the man whined about the use of his creation, he felt elated and happy that it will be used first hand.

what's more, straight into battle for it's first test fire.

" That's true but... wait for a moment, I will do on site adjustments. i don't want it blowing up you hear me!"

while he spoke quite ill of the commander, everyone in the room found it natural as the two of them were originally friends of the same origin. only him was the only person in the establish that is able to speak quite carefree at the woman without a care in the world, and the woman did not hate such attitude.

"Give this man a ride"

"Right away ma'am"

she ordered, sneering at the man who grumpily walked away through the entrance door. at the same time, the sound of a clock ticking at the walls of the command room overshadowed the murmurs from within the room.

*tick*tock*tick*tock

she then lifted down her crossed leg down to the floor as she stood up from her seat and looked at the table map in front of her as she fiddled with the chess like pieces placed on a tray at the side. Picking them up and placing them on top of the table in several strategic locations as she looked over at the situation.

" This is bad"

{We are soon arriving at the next station, Please kindly check your baggage before you forget anything and clean up after your mess}

Through an outlet came from a tubular funnel in the ceiling of the rail car spoke a pre-recorded voice of that a woman's. It sounded static as the sound of the engine roaring from the front of the train muffled the sound of the faint announcement.

at the same time, The train was passing through a seemingly large expanse filled with nothing but crystal clear blue water as sparkles of light reflected the morning sun right at the horizon.

at the other side was a seemingly large castle made out of stone as a giant wheel at it's side spun. Black smoke rose up from the surface through to the sky with large, long pipes covering the city sky in a dark fog.

below this train, and at many other rails from the distance were similar marble-like bridges spanning of over a few or so kilometers going in a one way direction. With morning to noon going in, and noon to afternoon just right about night time is out.

The view was certainly something else as the passage of this bridge meant something else beyond feasibility and emotions. for it meant a kind of status and accomplishment, for it the geography of this country consists of two cities only.

Separated by a huge lake like that of a sea, exists two sides of the current world. A City built on success, innovation, and wealth, and the other, a city built on weak, hopeless citizens, and poverty. a complete opposite of the other, which symbolizes the crossing of 'St. Maria' the more important.

Crossing this bridge and thriving on at the other side was the dream of many, and certainly mine too.

as i watched over the horizon filled with nothing but blue waters reflecting the pleasant morning sunlight over it's surface, i reached over my baggage and opened up a folded piece of paper.

[Application going on!]

was written in big red markings on top of the piece of paper as it contained information about a certain school that is currently on at the other side.

A prestigious school that boasts a ton of graduates of varying degrees and accomplishments, furthermore the same school is now accepting applicants beyond the bridges of St. Maria.

it was a once in a lifetime chance to get into such special establishment. with all my savings combined, scrapped right off the at the streets even I embarked on a ride across the St. Maria bridge.

i was an orphan, grew up in the orphanage until i was about 12 years old before i was kicked out because of my little trinkets. Before that, let's go back to about 6 years earlier in time.

At a certain open space in the city square, a monster appeared just as me and my friends at the orphanage was doing a little bit of adventuring as kids.

The monster that appeared was quite hideous, a black mucus covered it's body that's also covered in sharp spikes. It had the shape of a man wearing a table blanket over them, and it's hands completely recreated that look when it tried to move it's hands through the 'blanket'.

Terrified, a normal child would have run off immediately, except for me. Adult and elderly alike fled the area upon seeing it's figure as I watched in awe.

it may have looked like completely dangerous in the eyes of others, but for me i was amazed. Not like i second the monsters, but for such an organism to be able to move it's body in a way that doesn't hinder it's movement, it was really a piece of work.

what's more, as a child told with stories of old. The mention of monsters had intrigued my interest as such, I had always wanted to see one up close, never would have I thought that it would been soon.

then, 'He' appeared. with some kind of hero like entrance, a man carrying what looks like a pressurized tank attached to his waist with a flexible rubber hose connected to a handheld device attached to his right arm, looked like a super hero.

He swooped in wearing nothing but ragged clothes and a leather jacket. Though his face in all of the commotion was hard to look at, one close look and you could vaguely see a navy blue colored goggles covering his eyes as he fought with the monster.

"Hey kiddo! Mind if you go run or something"

in a hoarse voice, the man spoke as he jumped towards me.

"Uncle, you're cool!"

"I know, but you need to get out of here"

he wholeheartedly accepted my praise as I immediately fled the area to hide behind a box just a little ways behind them. I wasn't planning on missing such a fantastic sight to a front row seat of a real battle between monsters and him.

After that, the monster launched a few tentacle attacks right at the man as he swiftly dodge the barrage of tentacles quite easily. He moved with little to no movement at all, slowly walking up near the monster as he used minimal movement to parry the series of attacks.

before finally being a step away from the monster, he readied his arms as steam came out from within the device on his right arm. at the same time, he pushed the nozzle of the handheld device right up to where the core of the monster should be, right at his chest and triggered a switch.

*Boom!*

a pike came out from the nozzle and pierced right through monster as if it was cake! killing it ultimately as it slowly lost it's shape, and melted into a goop of black goo. Pressurized air came out from within the tank attached to his back as the hose connection came off from the tank.

*Clank*

the tank fell down to the ground as it rolled over right at my direction, slowly as I peeked out my entire body.

now from the steam that came out from the disconnection of the hose, and the previous build up. A fog made out of ambient temperature steam covered the entire scene as the silhouette of the man vanished completely from within.

soon after, the authorities came into the scene to eliminate the monster, but they were a bit tad too late as the monster had already been disposed of when they arrived. That was the very first time I had seen the man, and it may very well been my last time seeing, nor hearing him.

Still, after that i aspired to be a mechanic capable of creating such machinery capable of exterminating monsters of that degree. In the process, i did succeed but at the cost of being kicked out of the orphanage due to the risk of endangering the lives of my fellows.

I looked at the piece of paper reminiscing of the past, as I read the contents.

for someone like me who scavenged through the dumpsters to find old books, and used my money to buy second hand books, this seemed like god's gift that had shown itself after working myself hard to the bones in hopes of reaching my dreams.

As someone who is a commoner who grew up without parents, attending this school that is mostly managed and attended by nobles all alike, after all, it was a dream come true.
