Chapter 2: Prologue

The sky was something that was supposed to be uniform with its changes. It was supposed to be constant. Or at least, that was what I assumed. Right above me, the sky lost its brilliant Moon which was abruptly overshadowed by the much larger Sun.

In front of me, a translucent blue revealed itself out of the blue and displayed a text that threw me off. I was dumbstruck by its contents.

[Emergency Maintenance Prompt: Due To System Error]

Two Guardians, both red-clad, hovered over our town. Far away into the sky, they were distant from me. But I could see them from afar even though they appeared to be small. Behind them was the administrator himself.

I recognised them from the Black Name Cards hovering over their heads.

[Applicable Areas Will Be Erased]

Another prompt stated.

Every person I've ever known, every spec of the village that I grew up in, all of it was being wiped out of existence.

"Mabel!" I cried till my lungs gave up, amidst all the chaos that unfolded. "Mabel!"

I trembled as I held onto a fading person. Her body decayed into small pixels, slowly and steadily. Tears trickled down my cheeks and fell upon the fading girl whom I knew as Mabel. I watched helplessly over my dear sister of mine over her last moments.

"Brother, There-" I never got to hear her last words, as time wasn't forgiving."

She soon turned into a lifeless husk and faded out of existence. 

All the countless cries I could hear from behind, people who suffered similar fates. I heard their low and breaking voices, but there was nothing I could do to help.

Suddenly, I felt the ground shake restlessly all around me. I was violent enough to expect an immediate response from me. I turned about to see something coming my way from afar. People flocked as they ran desperately.

I heard thuds in quick succession,

Houses fell apart, and the ground cracked with great intensity. As dwellings crumbled, a guardian showed himself in a humanoid form that was much taller than an average human. I stared at the being who was several times stronger in his wrath that even players can't fathom achieving.

I was nothing more than an NPC who trembled from the overwhelming intimidation. Shivers descended my spine, and my limbs shook showing no signs of stopping. It was as if I lost all control over my fours.

As it marched oblivion unto the once beautiful landscape, it shot a blue beam that guaranteed my death. The beam travelled at an inescapable speed and severed my left limbs.

"Ma...b...el!" I yelled in an inaudible voice, as the excruciating pain took over my senses.

I tried to scream but nothing came out, I crawled towards her with what little was left of me. I saw her float over me whilst her lifeless body disintegrated.

I begged the administrator who was situated close to me, "Why're you doing this? What did we ever do to you?" I asked in dismay.

I pleaded with him to stop, but it was to no avail.

"Sorry, I'm sorry!" I uttered. What I thought was a lifeless body then flinched.

"Don't cry... Brother... Please live on!"

As I saw her vanish, my body, soul, and mind began to comprehend the deep feeling of hatred for the very first time. It was coldness and indifference towards that bastard who killed my family.

[Bug has been located]

[Threat level low]

Five Guardians and two Mini-Guardians were beside the administrator. I remembered their red-clad appearance. But more importantly, the figure who stood taller than them all, shiny leather boots, black trousers, a grey and black patterned vest full of pockets, a shabby back coat over it, and a metal mask that covered his face with one hole for him to look down on me.

I memorised the administrator's appearance vividly.

As they walked closer toward me whilst looking at me with intense malice, "Confirmed to be one of the causes of the errors and determined to be a potentially disastrous virus," He said in a robotic voice. 

"Initiating fixes!"

[Permanent deletion]

[Backup storage deletion]

[External storage deletion]

[Forced format]

He released a red beam of light towards me from a stone's throw distance.

Why did things turn out this way? All we ever wanted was to live a normal life. So why are we being deleted

I glitched and flicked as I felt more pain, blood oozed out of my eyes and nose.

(So why? are we being deleted}

 I evaporated and then parted with the wind.
