Su Han watched Qiao Yushan leaving the scene without having the chance to say his piece. With a knapsack behind his back, he headed straight to Qiaoshi Corp’s Finest Hospital.
During his fifth year in university, Su Han took a study leave to learn medicine and martial arts with the old Taoist devotee deep in the mountains. Hence, his inability to achieve the required credit hours resulted in suspension by the institute.
His internship came from the effort of the old Taoist devotee pulling some strings. Su Han felt helpless at the situation of which he became the recipient of preferential treatment.
Qiaoshi’s Finest Hospital was the largest private hospital in Tianhai City. Equipped with abundant funds and rich with medical resources, it was one of the biggest properties under Qiaoshi Corp.
Qiao Yushan was the current president of Qiaoshi Corp and under her leadership, Qiaoshi Corp had earned quite a reputation in the medical industry.
To her, the biggest failure in her life was that inescapable engagement with a guy that did not even graduate.
After arriving at Qiaoshi’s Finest Hospital, Su Han asked several people before locating the Human Resource Department.
Sitting in his office, Director Liu Cheng burst into laughter upon learning Su Han’s failure to finish university. He swept a glance past the recommendation letter before tossing it aside.
“Since the Qiao family recommended you, I’ll arrange a position for you.” Liu Cheng narrowed his eyes onto Su Han. Tapping his finger on the table, Liu Cheng added, “We’re Qiaoshi’s Finest Hospital, even the nurses are university graduates. You… really put me in a spot.”
He spoke with a contemptuous look on his face. For someone who had pulled strings to get this job, Su Han thought he could measure up to the responsibilities of a doctor? Dream on!
Su Han maintained a calm demeanor and did not comment at Director Liu’s reluctance in admitting him. He did not graduate after all. Despite learning under the old Taoist devotee who was a miracle doctor for five years, he had nothing to show for it.
“How about this? The lobby needs a hospital guide. Why don’t you take one for the team?” With a hint of banter, Director Liu chuckled and barred his teeth. “It’ll only do youngsters good for tempering themselves. You don’t know just how many people are after the position in the Patient Help Desk!”
Though Su Han could tell that Director Liu was merely faking it, he did not say a word. Instead, he nodded and replied, “Alright, the Patient Help Desk it is. Thank you, Director Liu.”
The old Taoist devotee made an arrangement for him to intern here, so the old man would throw a book at him if he were to quit. Although he was more capable than the old man, there was no reason to lay a finger on an elderly person.
Director Liu grew scornful at Su Han’s lack of temper, thinking Su Han probably would not live up to a technical job anyway.
‘There’s at least some tact in this boy.’ Director Liu scoffed with disdain within. He then stuffed the recommendation letter into the envelope before calling someone over to lead Su Han in going through formalities.
Su Han received his work outfit at the Logistics Office and handed relevant documents to the application personnel as part of the recruitment procedure. He was caught in the hustle and bustle throughout the morning before everything was finally put to order.
It was the afternoon when a man dressed in a nurse’s uniform presented himself at the hospital’s lobby entrance. Standing in front of the Patient Help Desk, Su Han was at a loss looking at patients coming and going.
“You’re new?” A few little nurses standing at a side stared at Su Han with astonishment and burst into laughter. “When did we hire a male nurse?”
“I’m not a nurse, I’m a doctor on internship.” Embarrassed, Su Han nodded and chortled. At a glance, the Patient Help Desk was occupied by female nurses. It seemed rather odd for a man to be standing there.
“Doctor? No doctors would be at the Patient Help Desk.” A pretty little nurse covered her snicker. The little nurse had a favorable impression of Su Han due to his innocent appearance that made him seem cultured. Hence, she continued, “You’re new so you must not be familiar with the work at the Patient Help Desk. You should stand aside to observe first.”
Smiling at the little nurses, Su Han nodded with gratitude.
The job at the Patient Help Desk was not complicated but it commanded great patience. A healthy mindset should be maintained at all times while providing answers to the patients’ inquiries for them to receive medical treatment in the next step.
It took a while before Su Han could grasp the workflow and its procedures. He soon became familiar with the nurses as well.
“I didn’t think that you were really here to be a doctor, but you hadn’t graduated from your university.” One of the little nurses exclaimed. How could a non-graduate become a doctor?
Su Han could only smile. He really did not know how to answer the question.
“Alright, stop teasing him. He’s fresh out of school, you should be guiding him.” The pretty little nurse’s light chuckles gave out an air of purity. The other nurses poked fun at her, joking that she took a fancy to Su Han.
They were in conversation when a clamor was heard at the door.
“Out of the way! Out of the way, quick!”
A group of people, led by a middle-aged man scurried in with a stretcher. From the way he dressed and carried himself, he must have been a man of position. This man of leadership stared at an elder on the stretcher with an anxious look on his face.
“Father! Father! Hold on, it’s going to be okay, you’ll be okay!” The middle-aged man grabbed the elder’s hand and lifted his head to shout, “Doctor! Quick, call the doctor!”
Su Han watched them as the old man was hauled into the emergency room. Soon, Director Liu and other hospital superiors arrived. Two famous senior professor physicians followed suit.
Outside the emergency room, the middle-aged man who was on edge paced back and forth, guilt-ridden and blaming himself.
In the distance, Su Han took a glance and could not hold his tongue. “Who is this? Why the huge commotion that even the hospital’s superiors are here?”
The pretty little nurse lowered her voice, “I heard that old man joined the military during his youth and killed many enemies on the battlefield. He’s a hero that would jump in front of the bullet for the sake of victory. He’s deteriorated in health coming into his late years. Sigh, what a poor man.”
It struck a chord in Su Han. A veteran?
For a man to jump in front of a bullet for the sake of his country? This was a true hero! Such a person demanded his respect and admiration!
Before Su Han could respond, the middle-aged man was heard from the emergency room. “What? You can’t save him? Say it to my face again!”
Despite the middle-aged man grabbing Director Liu by the collar, he dared not put up a struggle. Instead, Director Liu smiled in a fluster. “I’m really sorry, the hospital’s two senior professors were on it but…”
Director Liu’s head was in a whirl. If they were unable to save the elder, this middle-aged man would blow his top and take the hospital down with him.
Unable to muster the courage to speak up, the hospital superiors stood aside and left Director Liu to handle it. The two senior professors were also helpless at the situation. It was out of their hands at this point.
With blood-shot eyes, the middle-aged man turned around and fell on his knees toward the emergency room.
“Father! I’ve let you down!”
The hospital superiors, Director Liu and the two senior professors were startled by him kneeling. However, the middle-aged man seemed to have accepted the outcome. At least, the hospital would not be held responsible.
“Let me give it a go.”
Suddenly, a gentle voice was heard as Su Han walked over. Standing before the middle-aged man, Su Han stared into his eyes.. “I can save him.”
