Chapter 163: Day 162

Day 162,

Morning thought: It occurs to me that other than the nightmares of the Catacomb Depths I can’t recall a single dream I’ve had since I’ve been here.  Have I even dreamed?  I was pretty sure I had, but now I’m second guessing myself.

 

I asked Maiko over breakfast if she ever has dreams.  The question caught her off guard.  At first she asked if I meant the Catacomb nightmares, which she thought I knew she’d had on a few occasions.  When I clarified that I meant just regular dreams she asked if I was asking because she wasn’t human.  I apologized for that accidental implication and explained that I couldn’t remember any dreams that I’ve had since washing up and wanted to know if anyone else was like that.

She said that she did.

Unthinking, I asked if they tend to be about anything in particular.

That pause so regular to our dialogues finally returned.

Eventually a break in the silence.

Mostly nonsense.

Sometimes her mother.

Sometimes scenes from her mother’s stories.

Sometimes her friends.

Sometimes they turn on her.

Sometimes being hunted and captured by the villagers.

One time, Lin looking like her.

A pause of not knowing what to say to all that.

I thanked her for sharing.

 

Back in the archive for the week.  Maiko walked the path back to the Village with me without my asking.  I almost reflexively told her that she needn’t trouble herself or risk being seen on my behalf.  Maybe it’s selfish, but I’m glad I didn’t.

She’s been good to me.  I feel like I ought to do something for her in return one of these days.
