Day 218,

Slept well last night until Cass arrived at the archive and woke me up.  Not that I’m complaining.  I did ask her to afterall.  Well, maybe a little complaining, but not in a serious way.  My fault for staying up too late.

That’s not the reason I’m exhausted right now though.  At least it’s a moderately pleasant (maybe “satisfying” is more accurate?) sort of exhaustion.  Going to be sore in the morning though.

After getting myself mobile, presentable, and fed, I went with Cass down to meet Lin at the docks.  Lin spent most of the day teaching the two of us how to properly handle the boat, while getting some practice in herself.  And by “some practice” I mean she did most of the rowing/paddling (I should have asked what the difference was) because the other two of us lacked the stamina to go very long without tiring out and needing a break.  Every time that happened Cass complained about getting out of shape from being cooped up in the library with me all rainy season.  I at least had the excuse of my lingering aftereffect from being ill, but in truth I’m not sure how much better I would have done even beforehand.

Our practice route was to go up the coast to Maiko’s cove (as I’ve taken to thinking of it) going out to Maiko’s island of lizards and fruit, and then back to the Village dock without the aid of hugging the coastline.  We managed to get two circuits of that in (with breaks on the island) before we decided it was too late to do another if Cass and I were going to ride back home with James.  And frankly I don’t think I had another go in me, physically or emotionally.  Lin makes for an admirably patient instructor, but I fear I was testing that patience by the end.  I was growing frustrated with my own limits anyway, and I suspect it was starting to show.

Still, you can’t expect to be good at something on a (probably?) first try, even if “first try” can be a slightly ambiguous term for me at times.  It’s certainly something that could make for good exercise if I start doing it regularly though.  Maybe I’ll even build up some muscle mass over this trip.  That’d be nice.

As for the cart ride back home, there’s not much to say.  I was too exhausted to say much and Cass - try to hide it as she might - wasn’t faring much better.  I think everyone else picked up on that.

Maiko was here when I got back.  I filled her in on the events of the past couple days and the plans we made.  She seemed amenable.  Said she’d get together what supplies she could tomorrow while I’m out.

As for me, I’m heading to bed early.  As I said: exhausted, so trying to keep this entry short.

I should have asked Maiko about the crystal.
