Chapter 229: Day 228

Day 228,

Last night went much as the one before.  Some different sprites present this time, but still the same total number.  I’m going to tell the others at some point today.  That prospect shouldn’t make me as nervous as it does, they’re my friends.  Maybe it’s guilt at having snuck off during the night to do something reckless and then keeping it a secret.

 

I talked to the others.  Showed them my notes and sketches.  Explained what I’d been up to the past few nights and most of my reasoning for not telling them sooner.  I left out the part about trying to keep them from getting up close themselves to keep them from getting haunted.  Didn’t think that would go over well.  Mostly I phrased it as taking time for me to believe it was real.

Overall, they were more concerned about me than angry.  Still at least a little angry though.  Cass took it the worst, feeling like she’d been left out.  Lin was more upset about the fact that they’d all been sleeping a short distance away from a gathering of sprites and I didn’t tell anyone about it as a potential danger.  I didn’t have a good answer to that beyond a hard-to-back-up statement that they didn’t seem interested in us.

It was late enough in the day when I made my confession that we weren’t going to leave then and there, but it solidified tomorrow as a day to leave and we wound up relocating the camp further from the spring.

Still, Cass really wanted to see the sprites and, to the surprise of the rest of us, so did Maiko.  So, now I’m back at the pools, writing late into the night while the others watch from the trees beyond the light of my lantern.  Between the fact that “my” nature sprite always seems to disappear when others are around and fears of attracting unwanted attention from the other sprites, we eventually agreed on the plan of me going out as I have been while they try to hide and watch from a safe distance.

All that’s left to do now is wait and hope this doesn’t make me look like I’ve been hallucinating the past few nights.

And that we don’t offend any of the sprites by having additional witnesses.
