Chapter 23: Day 23

Day 23,

It occurs to me that perhaps the biggest thing slowing down the library reorganization effort is my tendency to get carried away with reading more than I strictly need to in order to get an idea of the contents for sorting purposes.  That said, I’ve noticed a curious trend with the non-record stories.  Nearly all of them are works I recognize (or at least summarized/retold versions of them), presumably brought by other outsiders.  There’s almost nothing in here about local legends or folklore.  Yes, there are references to things like the shades, fairies, and Wandering God, but these are almost all just mentions of people running into them, but no stories about them; what they are, where they came from, that sort of thing.  The same goes for the origins of the Village itself.  And I’ve yet to read anything even mentioning Cloud Tower as anything other than a convenient landmark for orientation.

Are there records missing, or do the villagers just not write these things down because they assume it as common knowledge?  Surely they can’t be so uncurious about the world around them as to not even speculate or tell stories.  One of these days I need to just ask someone about it outright.  Maybe finally track down Theo.
