Steve unnaturally arranged his hair and said, “Well… Sheila, would you like to listen to fairy tales before you go to bed? If you want, I can read some for you.”
After Steve said this, he showed a trace of embarrassment on his face. He thought of himself as a big man and a big-shot businessman who was famous for his ruthlessness. But now, he was actually offering to read fairy tales to a child. He felt embarrassed…
But! When Steve recalled that his neighbor Kelly had undisguised, excessive love and enthusiasm for Sheila today, he felt a little upset. She was clearly his niece. Why did it seem like other people treated Sheila better than he did?
Mrs. Kelly had already gotten a head start by giving Sheila a pretty princess dress. He had to get ahead of her by reading Sheila some fairy tales!
In my eyes, Steve had already gone from being a cold, powerful man, to being a nervous, cautious father who didn’t know how to please his daughter.
It was funny.
As a mature 21st-century college student, I didn’t really need to listen to these bedtime stories.
But just as I was about to say no, a seemingly random memory popped into my head. I thought back to what Sheila’s mother had said, that Steve’s fairy tales were the best.
It was as if a tiny needle had pierced my heart, and I couldn’t help but feel a little sour and sad.
I took the initiative to grab Steve’s big hand, which was fiddling with the hem of his shirt nervously. I smiled sweetly and said expectantly, “Of course I need to listen to fairy tales! Thank you, Uncle!”
I could clearly sense that Steve was deeply relieved to hear my answer, and there was a light smile on his usually cold face.
Steve carried me to bed shakily, tucked me in, and started to read to me fairy tales.
Sheila’s mother was right. I hadn’t expected Steve, who looked tough and cold, to be so funny and interesting when he told stories.
I didn’t know if it was because Steve’s fairy tales were really so good, or if I was just tired, but I slept like a log. I felt like I was stuck in a long dream, one which I could not wake up from.
The Sun was already high up in the sky, and I finally woke up in my big, soft bed.
When I opened my eyes, I had a momentary illusion that I was still in my college dorm bed, but then I saw a luxurious princess room.
After washing up, I chose a light blue dress from the full princess dress collection that Steve had bought yesterday and tied a bow on it myself.
After everything was done, I put on my slippers and went downstairs.
It was nine o’clock in the morning. I thought that Steve would have gone to work. Was he taking a day off from work?
The Sun shone through the large French windows in the living room. It was bright but not blinding. It gave Steve a golden glow as he sat there reading.
Steve looked up at me as I dragged my slippers down the stairs. He saw me clumsily trying to get to the next step.
Oh, how I miss my tall legs!
Before I could get the past out of my mind, I saw Steve’s handsome face in front of me. His strong arms scooped me up from the ground and carried me to the dining table.
“Ah, Princess Sheila is awake. Mr. Steve has been waiting for you for a long time.” The maid smiled at me and continued, “Mr. Steve, I’ll bring the prepared breakfast to you now.”
“Waiting for me for a long time?” I repeated this sentence in my mind. It wasn’t that there was nothing going on in the company, it was that he was waiting for me to wake up.
Uncle Steve looked cold on the surface, and over the years, everyone, whether it be the neighbors or the servants, knew that he didn’t like children.
But judging from his recent actions, he was still very protective of me.
“Sheila, you can play at home by yourself today. I received news that Bob had been released. Don’t go to your old kindergarten. I’ll help you find another one later. If you need anything, just let the housekeeper know.” After telling me what to do, he was ready to go to work.
My eyes lit up.
I really didn’t want to stay home and play with little kids’ toys. I thought… If Steve let me follow him to his company, I could be useful! I’m not here just to be a cute little girl in a princess dress. Even in this body, my goal was to take back the family business!
