I was rudely awoken minutes later, Syl frantically shaking my arm. I felt like there was a fog over my mind, and I was barely able to form conscious thought. Trying to open my eyes felt like swimming through a pool full to the brim with honey.

“Come on Ashley!!! Get up! We need to GO! Now!!!” Syl yelled.

As she pulled me up off the ground, I struggled to remember why I was here. We had been dancing, but surely the fireworks hadn’t been that draining… Right? It took me a few minutes, but eventually I remembered the fight. I grimaced, thinking back on how I had, quite literally, ripped their souls to shreds.

Once she had me on my feet, Syl released me, and started to head off into the forest, but stopped when I collapsed. I was trying with all my might to follow her, but my brain wasn’t able to keep up. I felt like every time my brain managed to tell one part to move, something had happened, and it wasn’t where it used to be, causing my movements to become uncoordinated and sloppy. In addition, I was also struggling to stay awake.

Syl made her way back over, and picked me up off the ground again. The last thing I remember before falling asleep was Syl carefully positioning me over her shoulder, and jogging off into the woods.

When I woke up again, I was lying in a clearing. Syl was off to the side, and looked worried, but as soon as she noticed I was awake, she perked up, and came rushing over.

“Syl! Thank God. You're awake!” She exclaimed.

“Huh?... what… How long was I out?” I stammered out, noting that, while I was doing far better than before, my thoughts were still sluggish. I carefully stood up, as Syl gave me her answer.

“Two… Two days”

“Well… that’s something…” I mumbled, contemplating the situation I found myself in. At least now I knew why I was sore. “Where are we?” I inquired.

“I’m not sure,” Syl responded. “When you passed out after killing those slavers, I thought it would be in our best interest to get us both out of there. We have no way of knowing if there will be more people, and I have no realistic way of defending either of us. I picked a direction, and ran as far as I could. We are probably at least a five hour jog north of our camp.”

“Now that you mention it, that was probably for the best. As much as I hate to lose the home we were building, it might not be in our best interest to head back.”

With this in mind, we decided to continue heading in the direction Syl had carried me off to. We would stay the night here, as I wasn’t entirely sure I was ready for extensive amounts of walking yet, and then we would set off in the morning, assuming I was feeling alright, and hopefully we would eventually stumble across civilization.

We still had a few hours left before night, and we were both hungry. I tried to grow us a strawberry bush, and nearly passed out. My brain was still exhausted, and gathering the willpower to form a spell took everything I had. In addition, as soon as I tried to give the spell some energy to run off, a wave of exhaustion hit me. I was still exhausted from the fight, and I didn’t have any energy to give. I was barely able to get the seeds to form before my energy ran out, and I toppled over, struggling to stay awake. It was safe to say we were going hungry tonight.

It did give me something to think about though. I was fairly certain I had run out of magical energy, and that was responsible for me being exhausted. This was further confirmed when I nearly passed out from trying to grow strawberries. I thought about checking the book, but realized that it had been left behind when we left the camp. I hated losing such a valuable piece of equipment, but it wasn’t worth going back. If I had enough energy to perform a few basic spells, I might chance it, but I was currently running on empty. I wasn’t even sure I would be able to run away if there were people there.

Eventually, we both decided we were better off trying to get some sleep. We brushed aside as much foliage as we could, and lay down to rest. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to sleep, as I had spent the last two days doing that, but as soon as I laid down, the exhaustion hit me, and I crashed.
