As Ding Yi saw the door shake harder and harder, her face turned ashen, and her heart quivered in beat with the door.

She locked Mu Yueshi in a tight embrace, nearly smothering the child, but the child bore the discomfort without a single complaint.

Mu Yueshi looked up at the shaking Ding Yi and wanted to tell her: don’t be afraid.

Ding Yi’s mind was vacant with panic, her entire being trembling: “What should I do? What should I do?”

The door seemed ready to break at any moment!

Mu Yueshi paused for a second before whispering: “I’m not afraid of it.”

“What?”

Mu Yueshi’s eyes turned dark. He repeated what he just said: “I’m not afraid of that thing. Let me out there, I can chase it away.”

It was the natural proclivity of his species to feel superior to such a thing. There is not a single demon who would be afraid of a ghost!

But that was just in theory. The palpable malice that the spirit exuded could even shake a physical door. How could Ding Yi bring herself to let Mu Yueshi go outside?

“No way! There’s no way I’m letting you go.” After saying that, Ding Yi gritted her teeth and shoved the nearby cabinet to block the door.

Although she was uncertain as to its efficacy, Ding Yi shuffled through her bag and pulled out the talismans she ripped off of the straw hut in the bamboo forest.

When it came time to place them on the door, however, Ding Yi was frozen with fear and could not move an inch. Mu Yueshi, being the bright child that he is, swiped the talismans from Ding Yi’s jittering hands and pasted them on the door with spit.

Almost instantly, the noise outside the door abated.

The ragged breathing of the ghost became inaudible, as if it somehow became restrained, leaving only the spiteful knocking at the door.

Knock, knock, knock…

It was the first time Ding Yi had experienced a horror scene firsthand, and it would be no exaggeration to say that her legs had turned to jelly.

To have to deal with a vengeful spirit right off the bat…

That’s not cool at all, alright?!

Waaaaaa*, it’s way too hard for the newbie zone! I want to lodge a complaint!

Ding Yi screamed internally: You told me just now that it couldn’t get in! Absolutely terrible service!!

The system, in a rare moment of humility, said: The system’s judgment is sometimes affected by chance, causing a slight deviation from prediction. Please be at ease and remember one key thing: If the target is safe, you’re safe.

Oh.

So what you’re saying is that if the boss isn’t safe, then I wouldn’t be fine, but if I die due to an accident, it doesn’t matter at all!

Ding Yi felt the sudden urge to curse.

Mu Yueshi had been holding Ding Yi’s hand all this time, but at this moment, his brows creased as he said: “Ding Yi, your hand is so cold.”

It wasn’t just her hand, her face was also white as a sheet.

“Mhmm…” Ding Yi responded halfheartedly and dragged Mu Yueshi back to the bed. She then leapt onto the bed and wrapped the sheets around both herself and the boy: “When morning comes, let’s move out.”

There’s no way I’d live in this crappy haunted house any longer!

Mu Yueshi raised his head, his face full of innocence: “But, don’t you really like this place?”

Ding Yi’s complexion was blue with fright. She looked over towards the still shaking door and revealed a contorted smile: “Well what a coincidence. That ghost outside seems to also like this place…”

If I had to listen to this previous owner come knock every night, I would go crazy!

Mu Yueshi lowered his eyes. His face was still that of a good boy, but his gaze was chilling.

I just need to annihilate the thing outside then, right? He thought.

Of course, he couldn’t just tell Ding Yi this.

Having been almost possessed in her dreams, Ding Yi was too afraid to close her eyes. The circumstances being the way they are, there was no way she could fall asleep, so she endured with eyes wide open.

She wanted to let Mu Yueshi sleep, but the kid wouldn’t listen. He demanded that he stay with her, and so he sat next to her, his eyes unblinking.

Ding Yi wanted to put on a mature display despite her fear, but she also felt a sense of shameful reassurance from Mu Yueshi’s actions.

Having the future boss watch my back gives such a sense of security!

Under such a creepy ambience, Ding Yi could only hug Mu Yueshi tight, and the two kept their vigil till dawn. It was only at the rooster’s first call that the rustling door completely fell silent.

It didn’t matter how powerful the ghost was, it could do nothing in daylight.
