She exited the room and examined the opulent courtyard. With the powers of true sight, the entire place looked to be an eerie black and white painting.
To turn some place where living people resided into this monstrosity, it meant that the Liu manor must’ve been cursed by someone for many years or that too many people have died here.
Ding Yi shook her head in disgust while heading towards the place where the black aura was thickest. When she passed by a shut gate, she suddenly stopped.
Ding Yi stood there and looked towards the shut redwood gate, asking: “What’s that place?”
The old butler went silent for a moment before murmuring: “…that used to be the hot spring pool, but after Yuankong Zhenren* performed his rites warding against evil, this place was sealed. Back then, Zhenren said that this place should never be touched, and so, afraid of making any mistakes, we kept this place locked up…”
*(Yuankong is either the person’s given or baptismal name. In this case, most likely the latter. Zhenren is an honorary title given to accomplished cultivators)
Ding Yi quietly looked over the redwood door with peeling paint and exchanged glances with Mu Yueshi.
Mu Yueshi bluntly said: “It’s here.”
Ding Yi’s eyes widened. Holy shit, things just got serious!! This Yuankong Zhenren’s crappy sealing job must’ve had a mishap!!
[Discovered mission target! Retrieving the character information of “Yuankong Zhenren”, please wait…]
When she heard the mechanical reminder, she knew that she was close to this stage’s boss.
She gulped nervously, keeping an unreadable expression on her face before turning to the butler: “What are you waiting for? Open the gate.”
The butler went pale, his voice shaking heavily: “That… how’s that possible?! We can’t open that gate. If we break the seal, it’ll be all over…”
“If you don’t open the door, then your master will end up dead anyways. Make what you must of it,” said Ding Yi coldly. She then added in ill-humor: “It’s almost night…”
“Please don’t scare me young Miss!” the old butler shrunk back in fright. Seeing as how Ding Yi would not relent on the matter, he could only plead with a troubled expression: “That… I don’t have the power to decide something like that! Could you wait a moment young Miss? I need to go ask the Mistress.”
Ding Yi told him to go ask.
The old butler anxiously left, leaving Ding Yi and Mu Yueshi alone.
Mu Yueshi looked a bit depressed, and his voice lacked spirit, sounding a little stuffy: “They’re not good people, why do you need to help them?”
The Liu family was a bunch of local bullies who thought nothing of hurting others. Even if they died at the hands of the ghost, it would be a just result.
It should be natural to pay evil unto evil and vengeance unto vengeance.
Ding Yi crouched down and explained with great patience: “They aren’t good people, but those who hide in the shadows and hurt others are even worse. It doesn’t matter what grievance or hate you hold, the indiscriminate murder of innocents is wrong. Think about it, if we leave this be, then one day someone wanted to hurt you or me, why should others help us?”
Mu Yueshi’s face went pale, his gaze turning vicious: “Then I’ll kill them!”
Ding Yi was momentarily stupefied, and when she wanted to follow up and say something, the old butler returned with an anxious looking Mistress.
Ding Yi pulled Mu Yueshi aside and examined the tired-looking Mistress. Although Esquire Liu had terrible character, his tastes in women were uniform.
The whole place was filled with beautiful women, including this legal wife, and they were all of the dainty, frail variety.
Ding Yi had expected that she would need to spend a great deal of effort to make this shrewd Mistress agree, but the other party was unexpectedly decisive. She didn’t even ask any questions before taking out the keys.
The old butler was scared: “Mi-mi-mistress, are you sure you want to open the lock?”
“The Master’s already like this, what do we have left to worry about? Open the gate!” the Mistress said sternly before turning to Ding Yi. She stiffly moved her lips, speaking in an apologetic tone: “I’ll take the young lady inside.”
Ding Yi nodded her head but didn’t say anything.
The old butler’s hands were shaking as he opened the lock. The moment the gate opened, a gust of cold air, accompanied by two black crows, blasted them in the face-
They didn’t get far before the old butler screamed and fell onto the ground as if he bumped into something! His rigid limbs convulsed twice before going completely limp.
Ding Yi’s expression turned grim. She rushed towards the old butler, trying to drag him up, but discovered that his eyes were closed shut, and his body lacked responsiveness.
Immediately, the thick, heavy gate shut with a creak.
Mu Yueshi was slightly surprised. He ran to the gate and tried to open it, but it wouldn’t budge.
The Mistress followed suit, pushing and pulling on the wooden gate, her face pale with fright: “Why won’t it open, what should we do?”
Ding Yi didn’t answer her. She quickly pulled Mu Yueshi behind her and looked towards the anxious “Mistress”, her face stern.
“Stop pretending!” said Ding Yi through the gaps of her teeth.
The Mistress’s movements paused as she turned towards Ding Yi, confused.
Ding Yi laughed scornfully: “Weren’t you the one who closed the gates? Mistress.”
