As Asher explored the vast campus of the Imperial Academy, he was amazed by the intense auras and magical energy exuding from the passing students and upperclassmen. Some were even equal in caliber to the Vazrael family’s Knights who served under Sir Royce… A remarkable achievement for teenagers who had yet to even turn 20…
“So this is the Imperial Academy…” Asher muttered to himself in thought as he admired his new environment.
There was a reason why the Imperial Academy was known as the Emperor’s Talent Garden… It’s an institution that nurtures and grows the most powerful figures in the nation. Every student here was an important individual that was sure to make a mark on history.
In an academy surrounded by only the elite, Asher now realized how arrogant he had previously been. Truthfully, he had only come to the Imperial Academy for the sake of meeting with his grandfather. Asher believed a school like this had nothing to teach him… He was confident that his studies far surpassed any other… He couldn't have been more wrong.
“What a fool I am…” Asher muttered to himself in contemplation.
With much to think about, Asher continued traveling around campus and mentally mapping out his surroundings. His stroll was only interrupted when he stumbled upon a sudden disturbance in the central courtyard.
As Asher approached, he could clearly see a large crowd gathering around a familiar figure with blonde hair and clear blue eyes that shined like diamonds.
“Kevin…” Asher whispered as he watched the situation unfold from afar.
In the center of the crowd stood three figures… Cowering behind Kevin was a frail blonde girl with a swollen cheek. It appeared as though Kevin was defending her from the other red-haired student that was confronting…
“Lord Kevin, why must you disgrace yourself like this? Defending a worthless commoner is beneath you… Why must you lower the reputation of Lord Vazrael? It is the duty of us nobles to educate the worthless about their true place in society.” The red-haired youth lectured Kevin.
Upon seeing the boy with red hair, Asher recalled his identity… He was Bairon Graves; the heir to Marquis Graves and a talented Fire Mage. The Vazrael and Graves families were far from friendly, but they still had met on a few occasions at social gatherings in their childhood.
Seeing the situation, Asher was gradually beginning to understand what was happening… The Graves family was notorious for their viewpoints on noble supremacy. Even as a kid, Bairon was a nuisance…
“You are the one disgracing yourself Bairon. The Empire doesn’t care about bloodline, all that matters is merit. This commoner girl you speak ill of ranked 20th in the combat trials. What was your rank again? 78th?” Kevin taunted Bairon with a strike to his pride.
“Don’t get cocky, Kevin. I don’t want to hear that from someone eternally in second place. Looks like it’s the same whether it's in your family or here at the academy.” Kevin fired back with an insult.
The muttering audience and the brazen Bairon immediately quieted down as Kevin’s aura changed and immense magical energy began to leak from his body…
“Say that again…” Kevin dared with cold and empty eyes.
Sweat immediately began to form on Bairon’s face… Kevin’s demeanor had completely changed and Bairon found himself in the position of prey being stared down by a predator.
“I-... I-I said, I-” Bairon began to stumble over his words out of panic.
“Go on… Say it… I’ll show you firsthand the power of ‘second place.” As Kevin spoke, he began to gather magical energy in preparation for a spell. Just as Asher prepared to intervene himself, a third party entered the fray… It was the blonde girl who was cowering behind Kevin.
“Kevin, please stop! I can’t bear it if you get in trouble because of me…” The young girl pleaded to Kevin.
Kevin’s cold eyes were immediately replaced by a warm gaze that seemed determined to protect the young girl… Asher couldn’t help but be surprised at this unexpected side of his brother he had never witnessed before.
“You’re right… I got too emotional. I’m sorry Alice.” Kevin apologized to the girl named Alice while grasping her hand. The two began to walk away together.
Seeing that he was safe, Bairon backed away and howled like a losing dog…
“You’re making a huge mistake, Kevin… That filthy half-blood doesn’t belong here…” Bairon complained while retreating.
As the involved parties separated, the crowd that had gathered around them began to thin as well. As time passed only Asher remained along with a silver-haired girl who sat alone reading under a nearby tree.
The girl was immersed in the pages of the book and seemed completely undisturbed by the commotion that just occurred; as if she wasn’t even paying the slightest attention since the start.
As Asher’s gaze landed upon the girl, he couldn’t help but be momentarily bewitched by her otherworldly beauty… Asher struggled to avert his gaze, the young girl’s enchanting violet-colored eyes fixed upon him.
They were eyes filled with caution, disinterest, and disgust… Without speaking a single word, Asher could feel the girl’s malice. They had never even spoken, but it was like she was already trying to spite him…

Seeing her eyes turn cold, only then did Asher recall where had seen the girl before… She was the exam candidate he had spectated just before he began his combat trials… The terrifying mage who used mysterious magic to kill one of the examiners…
While Asher didn’t think much of her achievement then, it only dawned upon him now how powerful she must be to defeat an opponent of the same caliber as Professor Ryan who nearly killed him without effort using Gravity Magic…
Still, despite the evident danger signals the girl emitted, Asher couldn’t help but be curious…
“You seem to be enjoying that book… What’s it about?” Asher attempted to spark a conversation with the girl to establish some rapport.
“.........” In response, the silver-haired girl simply continued to stare at him in silence. Not even a moment later, she returned her focus to her book; ignoring his presence completely.
Recognizing the fact that his company wasn’t wanted, Asher decided to graciously back off and leave her alone. Though this was more due to the fear that seemed to grow every moment he remained near her…
“I see… I hope we meet again.” Asher declared as he began to walk away.
With his back turned, he remained unable to notice the very small flicker of emotion in the girl’s eyes… Beautiful, violet eyes; eyes filled with regret, disappointment, and loneliness…
After this encounter in the courtyard, Asher decided to wind down for the day and returned to his dormitory room whose location he discovered during his earlier exploration. With the key Lord Damien had given him, Asher unlocked the door and entered his new bedroom.
It was a far cry from the luxury of the Vazrael manor, but its accommodations were still quite comfortable for an aristocrat. After washing himself and performing some late-night magic practice, Asher crawled into bed and welcomed a well-needed rest…
Tomorrow marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life. And Asher wanted to be ready for it… With a clear mind, Asher drifted to sleep…
The following morning, Asher woke up early and headed directly toward Damien’s laboratory. After memorizing the campus layout yesterday, he was able to easily find his way back to the hall he started from.
When he entered the laboratory, Asher found Lord Damien sitting down at his desk and reading a stack of research papers… Noticing Asher’s entry, Damien simply nodded and greeted him.
“You’re early, boy… Sit down and wait. My other new student should be arriving soon…” Damien explained.
“You have another student beside me?” Asher asked with curiosity.
“Indeed. It’s a tradition for me to offer tutelage to the candidate who ranks first in the combat trials. You’re the only exception I’ve made in light of your circumstances.” Damien explained.
“I see… They must be a powerful mage. If they ranked first, that means they should be even stronger than Kevin who took the second place ranking… What type of magic do they use?” Asher asked with curiosity.
“I don’t know, but I imagine we’ll soon find out…” Damien answered cryptically.
Before Asher could ask him what he meant, the sound of the door opening rang throughout the room as Asher turned his focus towards a familiar face with shock… The girl who entered the laboratory was none other than the silver-haired girl Asher met under the tree in the courtyard the other day…
As Asher remained shocked, the girl approached both him and Damien and spoke out for the first time.
“It’s a pleasure to learn from you, Lord Damien. I am Luna Arkvale… This year’s top student.” The girl introduced herself with a clear voice like a bell that rang with an innocence unbefitting her apparent strength…
After greeting Lord Damien, Luna turned her focus to Asher and spoke in a quiet and timid voice.
“It seems you’re wish came true… Though our reunion didn’t seem to take very long.”
While Luna’s cold eyes continued to spite Asher and instill fear into his soul, a hint of joy and relief could be felt from her words…
“I suppose so… Pardon my late introduction, Lady Luna. My name is Asher Vazrael. As peers studying under the same teacher, I hope we can get along.” Asher answered the girl with courtesy.
As the two awkwardly greeted one another, Damien watched their interaction with evident amusement. After which, Damien began to speak…
“Now then… Let’s begin your first lesson.”
The first day of class at the Imperial Academy was about to begin…
