I wasn’t expecting such a raw connection from a girl I’d just met. We had an undeniable attraction beyond her predisposition, and it showed. Maybe her mother was right, maybe this was fate. And having her in my party as my mate was destiny.
It was morning, and I could feel my regular-sized Serria shuffling underneath the covers of our flattened mattress next to me. She woke up just when I did, the sun’s rays from the windows waking us up. My demoness didn’t wait a second after I opened my eyes to pounce on me, her supple huge breasts bouncing over my chest as she bathed me with kisses.
“Good morning to you, too,” I said with a smile on my face.
“Looks like you gained a new skill. You also have a few points to allocate. Check your stats.”
I did, taking a sigh of relief from not seeing that locked note next to my special skills. Emera told me how to allocate my points; a simple command with the count and it moved on its own. After which, my stats updated accordingly:

“Single Bullet Berserker. A shotgun attribute.”
“Sounds dangerous,” she said excitedly.
“Have an idea what it does?”
“No, but you don’t need me to tell you that you can’t test it out now. My mother will have no problem disciplining the blood squire.”
“You’re the one who needs to worry. I’ll have no problem pointing the finger at you for turning her sleigh into a platform.”
She giggled, then her expression turned serious on me. “What you’re doing here is beautiful, Knives. Truly beautiful and honorable. Heh, really, I have no word for it. It takes a special someone to do what you’re doing.”
“What do you mean?”
“The dedication you have to go through all of this. For a mortal, doesn’t this scare you?”
I smiled. “Is it so strange that I understand the risks, but I’m doing it anyway?”
“I know you told us at dinner that you are also helping your town Ebonmere in the process. But still. I’m not sure if you’ve heard it before, but… these sin gods and their people… they are too much for us. Imagine how terrible they would be for you. And despite you seeing just a taste of what they could do, you fearlessly strike at them for us. We are truly different people, Knives. I don’t think I could stand up and do what you’re doing.”
“I think you’re thinking too little of yourself, Emera. It’s a great thing… what you’re doing here for these people. You could have taken your sisters and your mother and escaped anytime. You know how to find the Peacekeepers, I imagine that they routinely scout the border areas for survivors. Given that, you chose to stay here regardless, with the unfortunate few who struggle to escape. Emera, you and I aren’t so different as you may think. While we both fight for those less fortunate, you had the opportunity to leave. I don’t. Despite that, you didn’t turn your back on your people. That’s admirable.”
“They cannot make us leave. We live here, this is our land. I’d rather fight than let them win! Besides, you would have done the same thing, even given the chance to leave. It’s who you are, a guardian. It’s in your blood.”
I gave her a smirk. “You seem pretty interested in my job title. Did you want to swap places?”
She giggled. “See, the difference here is that I have to protect a town. Unlike you. You have the strenuous task of defending an entire nation.”
“Should I take that as a yes?”
“I love challenges, but that’s just suicide.”
“I thought you said that you were stronger than me?” I teased her, moving myself over her appetizing naked body and switching positions. I ran the back of my finger over her beautiful face, and grinned. “I genuinely want a better future for Litheenia, and it starts with us.” I gave her a passionate kiss, Emera running her fingers up my brown hair lovingly.
She peeled back slowly, looking into my eyes with heavy concern. “Dark days are coming, my blood squire.”
“I thought they were already here?”
“No. Word has it that Greed, Lord Kurrun, plans on executing Onessa if he doesn’t get Dera-Dera, his special sorceress concubine, back within four nights. Which is three nights now. What’s worse, I’ve noticed our people turning against each other. Greed has poisoned them, with promise of peace and protection to the town who locates her.”
I froze. “Do you know where she is?”
“No, no one does. Trust me, if we did, we would have been in worse trouble.”
“It is no secret that he is lying…”
“But Litheenians are desperate. They will do anything for even an illusion of truth.”
“Hmm. So these pillars of sin are indestructible, but the sin gods aren’t. It makes my life easier, but harder at the same time. Onessa is still under Greed’s control.”
“And if our goddess dies, then… all is lost. We will surely fall as a nation.”
“Don’t worry, Emera. I won’t let it come to that.” Her eyes started to mist over, my thumb stroking her cheek tenderly. I could tell she wanted to believe me, and her faith in our party was there, but the time constraint was threatening our chances.
“I will fight alongside you, Knives. Let me do my part in rescuing our queen.”
“I won’t deny you that privilege. We could use all the help that we could get.”

“It’s three nights now… you do remember that part, don’t you?” she asked solemnly.
“That means in three nights, you’ll see your goddess again.”
She finally gave me a confident smile.
“Now come on. Smells like breakfast is waiting for us in the kitchen.”
+++
Three nights to get Onessa back. The term mission impossible was buzzing in my subconscious like a dark omen. Spirit wise, I had the fight in me, it was just going to be difficult matching a sin god after only leveling up by one. That being said, I felt terrible for not telling Emera that I knew where Dera was. Then again, I had promised Maelise that I wouldn’t say a word to anyone.
I wasn’t foolish, I knew Greed wasn’t going to do shit but slaughter more and more Litheenians behind his promise. I highly doubt that peace was even in his vocabulary. Now my issue was compensating by buffing up my party for a slim chance of giving this sin god the works. But I couldn’t do that to them… especially to Faye. I had promised her that I’d protect her. All she had to worry about was healing us. I couldn’t fall back on that promise. I’d hate myself for it if I did.
I had the indisputable will of an iron tiger. I wanted more than anything to protect these people, and that meant bringing Onessa back home safely. Emera and I washed up and got dressed before we went to the kitchen, where Pothesly, Faye, Pochi, and Maelise were already waiting for us at the kitchen table, with a full spread in front of them. I could hear yard work being done outside, my guess Cronei and Tezera were putting in some work bright and early. We greeted the company, and we received a warm greeting back, all except Maelise who was feeding me a sharp glare.
“Cat girl, why the long face?”
“She’s still upset with me, supposedly,” Faye said with a devious smile on her face, followed by a sip of her glass of water. “It isn’t my fault. I was simply doing as I was told.”
Maelise sucked her teeth. “Pothesly told me what happened,” she said bitterly, snipping her glare at Emera next. “I just wished that your mother hadn’t pulled Knives aside just as we were going to share a night of heated passion together!”
Emera grinned, following me to the kitchen table. “You neko can have a bit of jealousy in you. Are you sure you’re all right with sharing?”
“No, I’m not! Now I have to split Knives between you and Faye!”
“I beg your pardon?!” Faye cried, nearly choking on her mystery meat.
“But, this was inevitable.” Mae sighed. “Still, I want you to know that knives drank my milk first, and as first mate, I have a few perks.”
“You also have a bit of leveling up to do,” she said checking her stats, Maelise dropping her jaw at her statement. She looked offended, trying to hold back her tongue before Emera did the same thing to Faye. “And you, too, priestess. But, unlike Maelise, you have a good excuse.”
“Excuse me! Who are you to comment on my level?”
“Mae, you’re sitting comfortable at level 25, aye?” Pothesly commented as she served me and Emera breakfast. “You haven’t advanced much since the last I heard of you.”
Maelise choked.
“My mana was low yesterday. I had also been in a fight before those barbarians stormed into our home. But I am better now.”
“Emera is a level 48 warrior,” Pothesly said, winking at me.
“Mother, you don’t have to gloat for me,” Emera said sheepishly, then turned to me with a confident grin. “But it’s true.”
I chuckled.
“And thanks to me, our blood squire has finally unlocked his special skills.”
“Well, look at you taking all the credit? I could have sworn cultivating was a two person job.”
“Whaaat?!” Mae cried, jolting off her seat with her hands at her head. “You didn’t tell me they fornicated?! This is the worst day of my life!”
Emera chuckled. “What did you think he did? Drank my milk and had a deep heartfelt conversation with me about sports?”
“See it as a good thing, archer,” Pothesly said. “Now we know that dual cultivation grants our blood squire a new ability per woman he seeds.”
Faye’s face flushed, the priestess clearly bothered by the news.
“Better learned now than later, because in three nights, Greed is planning to execute Onessa. I told Knives already.”
“Child, we are speaking about Lord Kurrun, the bastards of bastards!” Pothesly grunted. “Three nights isn’t enough time for our blood squire to level up and face him.”
“Then what do you propose, Pothesly?” I asked her calmly. “Because sitting it out is clearly not an option.”
She reclined into her seat and sighed. “Well, there is something you can do… but, it won’t be easy.”
“Whatever it is mother, Knives is ready. He’ll have me part of his party.”
“Oooof course…” Maelise said rolling her eyes and slouching her elbow over the table.
“What’s the plan?” I asked.
“It’d be downright suicide to face Kurrun head on right now. But, there are three ultra-rare archaic artifacts you can collect to help you rescue our goddess right under his nose. When gathered together, you must recite these words, Ogenu Gabeska Naganuu. This chant fuses the spear shaped crystals together, after which, will make everythin’ within a two mile radius freeze for ten minutes.”
“How do we stop it from freezing us?” Faye asked.
“It has a safety bubble, a few feet in diameter. Once you sing the chant, it will glow, create that diameter along your feet, then you must immediately throw it where you want the spell to trigger. As soon as it lands, everything else falls into play. Pretty instantaneous.”
“Where are they located?” I asked.
“Ruu is in Branchoe, Litheenia. In the caverns of Ashe. Cotha is in Zerd, Aganthago. Pride’s region, in the forest of Teppa. And lastly, Averoo is in Uto, Reggadon. The nation of Wrath, where it was last spotted as a collector’s item for a wealthy Ironmonger. This is a one-time use only type of exchange, and you must execute it flawlessly the first time. Because you will not get another chance. Understand?”
“Well, I could see Ruu probably being an easy target, but I am wary about Cotha and Averoo.”
“Especially Averooo,” Maelise said to me worried. “If this artifact is inside someone’s house in Uto, one of the more populated districts in Reggadon, how the heck are we getting inside the area?”
“We loot,” Emera said, turning to Mae with a side smirk. “Or are your days of looting over, neko?”
“Don’t talk to me like you know me!” Maelise flailed playfully.
“Demons in Reggadon and Aganthago have pretty rare items in their sash. The more of them we take down, the higher the chances of bumping into a stealth relic.”
“We are going off of an assumption!” Maelise retorted.
“And a pretty good one, too.”
“We have three nights to do this, Emera,” I reminded her. “Are you sure?”
“I wouldn’t put my faith in it if I weren’t, Serrian.”
Maelise rolled her eyes. “All right then, let’s do this already! The longer we sit around, the more time we burn.”
We finished our breakfast and bid our farewells, Emera holding her family in her arms before we departed.
