Chapter 1: Prologue

"Her Royal Higness Princess Vivienne!" The announcer said as Vivienne walked down the stairs into the ballroom. It was the first ball of the winter and was Vivienne's seventeenth birthday. Vivienne's twelve older sisters were already here and half of them were already married or in courtship. Vivienne walked down the stairs, her white dress flowing around her legs as she walked down. Her head was held high as she walked down her crown of gold and sapphires.

"Your Majesty," a man said as Vivienne reached the bottom of the stairs. He took her hand and kissed it as she looked down at him. "How do you fare today?" He asked as he looked up at Vivienne longingly. It was obvious to Vivienne that he had a huge crush on her even if he was twice her age.

"It is quite alright, thank you," Vivienne said with a curtsy to the man.

"Count Jasper McAllister." The man said as he looked at her. His brown eyes looked at Vivienne's blonde hair as she looked up at him as finally stood.

"May I have this dance?" Count Jasper asked Vivienne his eyes were full of hope as he bowed to her.

"You may," Vivienne said as she took Count Jasper's offered hand. He led her out onto the dance floor and placed a hand on her waist. Vivienne didn't react as it was a part of dancing even if it meant being uncomfortable. They waltzed around the room until the trumpets were played again. "Their Imperial Majesties Emperor Charles Da Ville and Empress Dianna Da Ville." He said.

Vivienne looked up to see her father and mother. Her father was wearing a suit of all black his hair slicked back. He wore a large gold crown as he offered his elbow for his wife. Empress Dianna was wearing a dress that looked the color of fresh cream and her crown was similar to Vivienne's own. Everyone parted as the emperor and empress made their way to the thrones up on the platform.
The music started again and everyone started dancing again and Vivienne left the ball secretly with another girl her age. "You can't keep doing this Vivi. What if someone realizes that you're gone? Or worse they find out about us?" Rose Key a servant said as she looked at Vivienne.

"I don't care what they think Rose. You are the only thing that matters to me." Vivienne said as she brushed a stray lock of Rose's brown hair back behind her ear. Rose leaned into the touch and smiled as she looked at Vivienne. "You don't care....no matter how risky it is?" She asked as she looked at Vivienne.

"Why would I care? They can't hurt me and I won't let them hurt you." Vivienne said as she cupped Rose's cheek in her hand softly. Rose smiled as she leaned into the touch closing her eyes. "I love you Vivi..No matter what happens," Rose said before she kissed Vivienne softly.

Vivienne kissed her back closing her eyes. Rose heard footsteps coming down the hall and quickly pulled away from Vivienne running down the hall. Vivienne smiled as she looked down the hall after Rose before turning to head back to the ballroom.

Vivienne reentered the ballroom and no one seemed to even realize that she had been gone she smiled as she looked around and started dancing with the first person that came to her. She was passed around the room and was eventually in the middle of the ballroom dancing with her father.

"You look beautiful tonight Vivienne." Emperor Charles said as he looked down at his youngest daughter.

"Thank you, father. You look handsome." She said as she looked up at him a small smile on her face. She closed her eyes as her father led her through the room in the waltz. It was normally like this. They exchanged compliments to each other and danced together. They didn't care as long as they were able to be together.

Vivienne was eventually passed off to her mother who smiled as she looked at her daughter. "How is the ball tonight?" Empress Dianna asked as she looked at Vivienne who was the same height as her.

"It is wonderful. Thank you, mother." Vivienne said as she smiled. They danced across the room making their way to the outer circle.

"Is it everything you expected?" She asked as she looked down at Vivienne.

"It was everything and more," Vivienne said as she smiled thinking back to when she had snuck away to be with Rose.

"That's wonderful darling." Empress Diana said as she looked around the room.

It was near the end of the party and Vivienne was conversing with her sisters when there was a crash. The sound of all the windows breaking and glass hitting the floor brought everyone on high alert. The guards hurried to surround the royal family as black wolves landed on the floor growling. They started to run at everyone and the royal family was starting to get moved away when the fires started. There were screams and thuds as people started getting their throats ripped out blood pooling on the floor.

Vivienne kept running and looked around herself seeing that all of her sisters had fallen, victim. The smoke was black and I could hardly see three feet in front of me. She kept running when she saw another person standing. Vivienne ran towards her and stopped as she looked down to see a body with a gaping hole in the throat. She screamed as she looked at the blood on the floor. A few inches away a wolf was there and blood splattered across her face as Vivienne kept screaming.

Get out of here Vivienne!" Empress Dianna yelled as she looked at Vivienne. A wall of fire was separating us as Vivienne heard a scream not far from her followed by a low growl. She turned around to see a black wolf prowling closer to her walking through the fire. "Go, Vivienne!" Dianna shouted as she ran through the fire towards Vivienne just as the wolf lunged. Vivienne felt burning hot pain in her side as the wolf bit her and she screamed as her mother rammed into her causing her to stumble and fall out the window. Vivienne screamed the whole way down as she hit the ground from the fifteenth story. As soon as she hit the ground everything went black.
