'He is still not here,' Karen looked through the glass window of her office. It has been two days since they visited him at his house, but Alex was still not back at his desk.
Well, Karen knew that it might take him some time to be up and running, but her eyes longed to see him. And to be honest, it came as a surprise to her. They have not known each other for even a month, yet these feelings have sprouted inside her heart that troubled her more than they were pleasant.
'Am I being rebellious now? It's like puberty is hitting me late, very late' Karen couldn't help but laugh at the weird thoughts coming to her mind.
'Unhh... If only he was a bit less of a scum,' Karen thought about her husband. She has already given many chances to that hobo, but that stinking asshole was never, ever serious towards her nor his life.
Karen was sinking in depression the more she compared Alex and her husband. Sighing at her fate, she put the file she was holding onto for no reason and made her way out of her cabin. She straight away went to Amber.
"Amber, do you know if Alex is coming or not today?" Karen asked.
"I haven't had the time to talk with him, Chief. But if he is still not here, it's highly possible that he might not be coming today," Amber said as she tried to stand up, but Karen pushed her back to her seat.
"Ellaine, look at our Chief. She is so restless for her favourite newbie. I don't remember seeing her so restless for any of us." Hazel said, but she was intentionally loud enough for Karen to hear it.
"Yeah, last time I was sick for three days, and yet she only called once to inquire how I was doing," Ellaine agreed with Hazel.
"Will you stop your chatterbox? I need to update his leaves in the system. But unlike your case, I don't know when will he be back," Karen said as she shut them up with her glare.
At this very moment, Karen's phone buzzed.
"Hello... Who is it?" Karen asked in an irritated tone.
Hazel and Ellaine, on the other hand, thanked their stars. Probably there won't be any scolding for them.
"Yes, it's me,"
"What? Where are you calling from?"
"Yes... Yes... I will be right there... But how is she? She is fine, isn't she? There is nothing serious with her, right?" Karen bombarded the person on the other side of call with questions.
"Okay... Okay... No, it won't take long. Yes... Thank you,"
Karen ended the call and rushed back to her cabin without saying a word to anyone else. She hurriedly grabbed her bag, and in a jiffy, she was out of the office.
The ladies were left confused behind her. They could clearly see the worry on her face, but what could it be?

Eleanor First Hospital
Parking her car, Karen made a run for the reception.
"Jessica, Jessica Wilson. Which room she... she is in? huuhh... hffuu... hffuu?" Panting for air, Karen asked as she halted her run in front of the reception.
"You are?" The nurse behind the reception asked.
"I... I am the one you called for, Karen,"
"Please let me check," The nurse said as she looked through her computer.
"Please hurry up," Karen was getting impatient with every second she wasted here.
"Just a moment... Here... Jessica Wilson. Person of contact, it says here it is Karen and Amanda," The nurse said and looked at Karen.
"That's me, I am Karen," Karen quickly said.
"If you won't mind showing me your ID and confirming your phone number," The nurse politely asked.
"ID?" Karen was confused. She was just here to see Jessica. What was this two-factor authentication for?
The nurse, on seeing the complicated look on Karen's face, replied humbly, "The patient you are here to meet is in the VIP ward of the hospital. We need to take their security detail seriously."
Karen nodded, "She is fine, isn't she?" Karen asked as she shuffled through her bag to look for her ID.
"I don't have her status here. You will be able to find more when you reach the VIP floor," the nurse said as she checked her ID and confirmed her phone number, "The ward number is 1607. Please head to the 16th floor." The nurse and handed over the ID back to Karen and pointed her towards the elevator.
"Thank you," Karen took her ID back and with hurried steps, made her way towards the elevator.
"Ohh... Kare..." Martha, who had just walked into the hospital, was about to call for Karen, but the latter had already walked away.
As she watched Karen walk away, Martha walked up to the reception and asked the nurse, who was dealing with Karen.
"The girl who was just here. Why was she here for?" Martha asked.
"She is here to visit a patient," the nurse replied.
"And who would that be?" Martha pried further.
"That..." The nurse was hesitant to do so.
"You know me, don't you?" Martha asked.
The nurse nodded, "I know you are a doctor here."
"How long have you been working here?" Martha asked again, very patient with the nurse.
"Three weeks," The nurse replied weakly. She had a premonition that Martha was going to throw her weight around and threaten her with her job.
"Is that so? If that’s the case, I won't make it hard for you. Either you tell me the details I am asking for or get someone else here right now," contrary to the nurse’s expectations, Martha said. She was in no hurry anyway.
The nurse vigorously nodded and soon from there to get someone else.
Soon another nurse, leisurely walking towards them, taking her sweet time, followed by the young nurse from before was in sight. She was not in the best of her mood for being called by this new nurse to entertain a nobody. She was making faces and scolding the young nurse in hushed voice to let others hear.
“Where is she?” the nurse asked.
The young nurse pointed at Martha and spoke a few words to the other nurse. When the other nurse saw Martha, her lazy attitude was blown to smithereens and horrified, she hurried towards her.
"Director... You here? Do you need something?" The nurse had a 180-degree change in her attitude. She was not her usual lazy self anymore.
"I need the details of a patient," Martha said coolly.
"Yes... Yes... Absolutely," The nurse said.
But when Martha didn't see the nurse, moving she raised her eyebrow in a questioning sense.
"Details?" The nurse asked meekly.
"Ask her," Martha said, pointing towards the young nurse standing there, shocked by the reaction of the other nurse. She had no idea Martha was such a big deal.
"What are you standing there for? Tell the Director what she wants to know."
"Yes," The nurse nodded, "The lady earlier was looking for the patient named Jessica Wilson," The nurse said, "I don't have much detail here, but she is admitted in ward 1607, the VIP floor."
"Jessica Wilson..." Martha started pondering when she heard the name.
"... Keep up the good work," Martha said to the other nurse and then looked at the young nurse, "I will give you five minutes. Gather your things and meet me here."
Martha didn't explain anything else but pulled out her phone and called someone.
