Chapter 1.5: Things are looking up
Trigger Warning: Violence (not graphic)
By the time the punishment had finished, Leila’s lip had busted from how hard she had bitten it. The guard unchained the woman and left as she fell onto her knees. A loud groan left her lips as she nearly collapsed into a heap and curled up. Her hair was heavy with a build-up of filth and sweat. It weighed heavy on her back as she trembled in pain. The beating had been hard but thankfully she never screamed. Now that she was alone she allowed herself to cry.
Everything hurt, her ankles were so swollen they looked unrecognizable. Her arms were the same, having been struck by the whip right at the end. She suspected the weapon had been dipped in some sort of chemical as her skin was breaking out. Tiny lumps that formed into hives appeared on her back and made her body sting. She was so angry, she wanted to rip the man's throat out. The teenager had only been in this world for a few days and she already was going insane.
Her head ached as she felt something blossom in her chest. With her knuckles against the earth, she let out a weak laugh. It was unfair, really. She was going to die soon. Her body was malnourished from Cleo refusing to eat the drugged food they'd given her. The whipping had torn at her skin and poised the perfect opportunity for an infection. With the amount of dirt and soot caked on her body, she knew it was bound to happen. The bastard and his pig family were going to have her die like an animal.
'Fucking bastards,' Leila looked up at the crack-ridden ceiling and scowled. 'How am I supposed to get revenge for Cleo like this?'
Her hands lifted up for her to see their scars. She sighed, she wished that the entity had been more clear. She knew what a counterattack meant book wise but how could she get an assassin's revenge? The teenager could use Cleo's body as she had but this world was still alien. The trial had been a risk that paid off but that didn't mean every day would. If she was going to survive long enough to counter and escape back home, she needed information.
'Like who exactly that woman is.' The commoner came to mind as she sat. The book didn't detail much about her besides a few basics.
The new concubine was found being attacked by a stereotypical abusive father. Cleo had been out with the prince and the two saw the girl bruised. In tears, she ran towards them for help and fell to her knees. This sparked something in the prince that made him swoop her into his arms and confront her father. Like a fairytale, the closed-off man opened himself to the weak nymph. And before Cleo's eyes, the two fell in love with one another.
'The woman's a bland damsel in distress.' Leila rolled her eyes and scrunched up her face. 'But, she probably hasn't told him about her pregnancy yet.'
One of the last things Leila read was the reveal that the concubine was with a child. No one knew and the girl seemed rather panicked at the news. Maybe seeing Cleo beheaded and her remains lit aflame made her opinion change about being a queen. Either way, Leila knew she'd have to put that idea on the back burner. Her chest was really hurting now and she needed rest. The teen was exhausted from the beating mentally and physically. Sleep would give her a moment of peace at least.
She looked around and saw nothing for her to use as a bed. Slowly to avoid hurting herself any further, she curled up on the ground. Her eyes shut immediately and she let out a weak yawn. The floor felt grimy beneath her damaged body. The room also smelled awful, her blood everywhere along with others. But that didn't matter to her as the light faded away. Soon, the teenager had fallen unconscious with her hair covering her face. Her arms hugged herself as she slept, escaping for a tiny while to her dreams.

These dreams weren't undisturbed, however, as she found herself shifting uncomfortably. Someone was outside the room, no, three people were outside. She could hear their footsteps in the fog of her dream state. She worried about what might happen if they saw her like this. They might use the opportunity to hurt her or worse, defile her body. But thankfully, she heard the steps stop a couple of doors away from her. Whoever was outside had started a conversation and that distracted them enough from checking. She could make out what they were saying thankfully, despite the distance.
"I can't believe that family wants her back," A man said with a gruff tone. His voice was shaky, whatever happened had disturbed him. "The bitch is rotting away as we speak."
Someone clicked their tongue and sighed. "Doesn't matter. Her people are a bunch of sick, twisted monsters who kill for the thrill of it. They'll want their kind buried within their walls."
Leila’s eyes flew open and she felt a wave of giddiness overtake her. This was an unexpected development but she definitely welcomed it. Cleo's family was a famous and feared clan of killers. They trained for years with vipers and creatures that had venom dripping from their mouths. They fought like hell and didn't like their reputation being tainted. The teenager grinned as she listened to the two men rant some more. The family was enraged to hear that Cleo had been accused and nearly killed. There was no way in hell they thought one of their own could fail a simple tea poisoning.
"The king almost bit my head off," One of the three bemoaned. "He's been working us like dogs all because of that son of his."
"That little brat swore up and down he'll kill that woman for hours. And ya know what he did?"
The gruff man hummed and she could hear him move somewhere. "What?"
A hearty laugh filled the room as the teenager strained to hear better. "He fell flat on his ass like a drunkard I tell ya, embarrassing. His concubine screamed from shock, the poor thing thought he'd passed out from stress."
Leila let a little giggle as she imagined the prince drunkenly prancing about. She had accomplished her mission and gotten under his thick skin. Oh, she found herself grinning at the memory of his face. The trial had allowed her to see his wounds openly and she wanted that again. Her hand weakly drifted to her chest she grabbed at her top. She felt an unquenchable hunger grow in her chest. This feeling craved and desired bloodshed. It was strange that she hated the man so strongly but she knew that the torture had fueled it.
Either way, the teenager was relieved. She was getting out of this hellhole and this pain would be behind her. While Cleo's family wasn't the best, they were territorial over their own. No way in hell they would let the prince come for her in their estate. Leila smirked and looked up again at the decaying ceiling. Things were looking better by the minute.
