Chapter 60: Teamwork

Sorix:

The puma is dancing around the bear. I can see that it is trying to find an opening. A patch of fur, it can latch onto, and stop the breathing of the much larger animal.

A paw swipe comes too close to the puma for comfort. I can't allow for it to fight alone. Silently, I run to the bear's blind spot, and trust my spear into its back.

Much to my chagrin, the spear doesn't go all that deeply inside. Yet, there is now blood on the coat of the animal. I try to remove the spear, but it is stuck in the mountain of muscle, which is the bear.

With one swift movement, I let go of the spear, and then back away. If normal weapons won't cut it, then it is time for the big guns. I focus necromantic mana into my hands, and shot out a dart at the bear's eyes.

The being ducks, and then charges at me. Only to be stopped by Nathaniel, who swipes his sword at the bear's belly.

He seems to have more luck than I because there is now a large wound in the bear's middle. Yet, I can see that it is already mending itself. This is the dungeon core we have to deal with. I wonder, just what sort of treasure it is guarding?

Nate kicks at the bear's stomach, and swings his sword in an arch. The bear chooses to fall backwards, than to meet the sword with a paw. With far more agility than this body should allow, the being rolls on the ground, and is back on its feet soon after.

The bear gives out a roar, and two wolves come from the side chambers. Personally, I find it ironic that the dungeon core has wolves for mini-bosses. For, in the wild, bears and wolves don't mix well.

I sent a dart at the wolf to the right, as Nathaniel tries to rush the bear again. He fails, and the animal, if one can even call a dungeon core that, sends him flying towards the wolf on the left.

I curse under my breath, and run as fast as I can. Nathaniel is trying to keep the animal's jaws from snapping around his throat. The maw of the wolf is bloody, but healing before my eyes.

I chance a look at Nate. If this hurts him, Givontair will never forgive me. Yet, what other choice do I have? I flood the cavern with my mana, cutting off all regenerative abilities. Including those of Nate.

Nate manages to push his sword up the wolf's maw, and the being whimpers. Now that it can no longer heal, it is looking for a way out. I place my hand on top of the wolf, and try to finish it off. My mana is potent. My plan could have worked.

Yet, it was not to be. Both the second wolf and the bear charge me. I try to get away from their path, but they keep on moving towards me. Nate will not be of any assistance, as he is on his back.

My spear is still sticking out of the bear. On a whim, I move within grabbing distance of the animal, and then take a hold of my spear. Now that the wound is healed, I only have to twist the weapon left to right, and I get it out. The bear roars, but I am already twirling the spear in such a way, that I get to keep the two animals off myself.

I hear a sickening squash from behind me, but I don't turn around to look. For, I know that there is one less living being in the room. It is not Nate; his presence is a reassuring weight at the back of my mind. Besides, I can hear him heaving behind me.

I use the link between myself and the puma, and order it to distract the wolf. Sandy does so, and I am left alone with the bear. I grin, for I don't need to kill it. Just cripple it.

"Come on, come at me," I make a couple of probing jabs at the bear, to piss it off.

Yet, there is still far more intelligence in the animal's eyes, than there should be. Instead of coming towards me, it charges Sandy. My puma is quick on her feet, however. I just knew that it was for the best, if I preserve her muscles and flesh.

Sandy herds the bear away from me, and towards Nathaniel. The dragon slayer is back on his feet. I glance at him, and see a large gash on his right tight. I don't like this, but Givontair will be able to heal that.

I put any thoughts of Nate to the back of my mind, and charge the remaining wolf. Unlike the bear, the spear manages to go from the eyeball, to the brain. It also helps, that the wolf can't get on its hind legs, and rise to be taller than I.

With the wolf's final breath, the bear begins to double its attempts to get at Nate. Now, whatever I have said about the dragon slayer, I have to admit that he can fight.

He ducks, kicks at the wound in the bear's stomach, and then sidesteps it. His sword is then brought into an arch, and the bear's paw is severed from its body.

The beast gives out a pained howl. Yet, I don't give it a chance to fall into a bloodlust. I make a poisoned dart, one that will paralyze even something as massive as this dungeon core.

I let it fly, as Nate steps back, so he won't be hit. The bear is too hurt, to notice the dart. For, it doesn't try to get away. When it slumps on the ground, I go to Nate, and look him over.

"Do you think you can stand the pain for a while? We need to get this to Givontair. If I restore your regenerative abilities, then the bear will get its back, and that means another fight," he nearly falls then, but I catch him.

In a weak voice, he says:

"Sure, do you mind carrying me?" I smile at that. The bear ends up in a bottomless bag, chained up, and muzzled. I swing Nate over my shoulders, and can't help but feel like a caveman at that. He groans out something that I can't quite understand.

Just because I won't get a second chance at that, I pat his behind. He gives me a weak kick on the chest. Totally worth it.
