Chapter 1: The Old Earth
As the train left the station, the shaking of the vehicle and its tracks scattered large numbers of dry yellow leaves through the air as well as the bleakness of autumn.
Wang Xuan watched until the train disappeared across the horizon before he withdrew his gaze. A few more classmates have bid farewell.
Once apart, all would remain separate in their worlds. No one knew how many years it would be before they would reunite, and for some, it would never happen.
Around him, there were still people waving their hands slowly, unwilling to stop, while others stayed silent and sorrowful.
Through the 4 years of college together, it was always difficult to overlook all the friendships and experiences they’ve shared together.
The setting sun’s light also angled down onto the drifting leaves, adding another reminder of all the good times past.
A delicate girl turned away and silently wiped the tears off of her glasses.
In this unique era, everyone would leave after graduation and likely never meet in their short lifetimes.
Some left victorious, with optimism as they continue to their next stages in life. Others remained defeated, unsure where their futures would take them.
It had been 4 months since graduation. Some would stay in this city with a bright future ahead of them, others still waited with trepidation. Even more of these graduates would leave disappointed and return back to their hometowns.
Wang Xuan was no different. He thought about where his path lies as he strolls towards his home.
On the aging street with 2 sycamore trees surrounded by fallen leaves, another walked by his side.
That man was currently complaining about the injustice thrust upon his friend Wang Xuan, “How could you not be with the ones who remain in the city? How could they abandon someone like you?”
As a best friend and roommate, Qin Cheng knew about his talents. If there was anyone who should have been chosen for success, it should have been Wang Xuan.
However, when the results came in, many didn’t understand how he did not make it.
“Don’t worry about me. How about you? Do you know where you’ll be heading?” Wang Xuan replied.
Qin Cheng quietly told him that his family pulled some connections and got him a position on Nova Luna.
“Nova Luna, across the vast expanse. I have no idea if we’ll be able to see each other again.” Wang Xuan said as he stopped his steps. All of his good friends are leaving him.
His tall and well-built body glowed a dim gold under the sunset as he observed his friend with lively and energetic eyes.
“I will return, we will be able to see each other for sure.” Qin Cheng is a sentimental man. As he thought about how hard it was to meet his buddy again, he felt dejected.
“Remember to let me know when you’re back!” Wang Xuan hugged his friend’s shoulders tightly.
Behind them, a choking sound came with the wind. The pair turned their heads and found a very emotional male classmate.
His face pale and his voice shaking, he shouted loudly, “I really wanted to stay in the city, to wait for the last opportunity. I don’t want to just go back like this!”
He worked so hard during these past 4 years to find his position here but was unable to remain in the end. A cry emerged from his lips.
Other classmates watched this scene and they also became crestfallen.
In another direction, a couple also stopped and stared at each other quietly as their tears fell.
Once they separate, it wouldn’t simply be a distance of a few thousand miles but lightyears away. They may never reunite either.
They hugged each other one last time. After that, there was nothing left between them but silence.
This metropolis was very old. There remained many remnants of a bygone era, such as these thick old trees that were at least hundreds of years old.
Relatively speaking, however, the city did a good job maintaining its history and culture through the years.

Many other cities had been long abandoned and were being slowly covered by vegetation and vines.
Even after returning to campus, Qin Cheng still felt like Wang Xuan was wronged. He suggested Wang Xuan go talk to the administration on why he was dropped from the list.
Even after graduation, they were permitted to reside within their residences until every single graduate confirmed their future career.
It was a rare opportunity. The chosen ones were allowed to remain in this city and be taken to Nova Terra. There appears to be some amazing discoveries made there.
Qin Cheng was not selected either, but his family managed to pull some connections to give him the opportunity to enter deep space.
He will go to Nova Luna, the moon that revolves around Nova Terra, which is also the most important base around the new planet.
Qin Cheng murmured, “You know, even if the smallest rumors that come from over there make my blood boil in excitement. No matter what, you have to get a spot!”
Under the moonlight, the shadows of the trees shook as Wang Xuan stretched his body on the lawn. He began to practice “Sanjutsu”, a very practical combat technique inherited from an old era. His motions blew large amounts of fallen leaves into the air.
As he continued to go through the motions quickly, he replied with a steady breath, “I’m waiting for the final results.”
Deep space is boundless and the universe is vast, but it is also cold and devoid of life. Apart from Old Earth, people were only able to find one other habitable planet.
However, many years ago, immigration to Nova Terra was closed off, and it became difficult for ordinary people from the original planet to enter.
Relative to Nova Terra, many began to call this planet the Old Earth instead.
In the olden days, this planet was called Earth, and it was where humans originated from.
Perhaps the planet has become more desolate. There are many barren cities, uninhabited and overgrown with vegetation.
All of this was caused by a war in previous times.
When technology developed to a certain extent, once open warfare occurred, it became a terrible event.
The once-prosperous world was destroyed, and the planet became ruined and difficult to live on.
It was at this time that many began to escape to outer space.
In fact, human technology was not as advanced as one might have imagined at that time. They had only just established a Moon base before the war began.
Therefore, those who escaped could only use the moon as a temporary residence.
However, it was under these circumstances that humanity found a habitable planet and were able to start a Great Migration towards that place!
People stuck on Earth still found it inconceivable to this day.
How did technology advance so rapidly during this generation? However, no one was willing to expose this secret.
All the emerging dark technology at the time, such as stable black holes and FTL1 faster-than-light engines, did not appear possible to accomplish in such a short time period.
Some people in the Old Earth suspect that all of the answers lie on the moon. However, it was a pity that the consequences of the war were devastating. The landmasses were half-annihilated and even after all these years society was unable to recover. Technology has also regressed, making it impossible to return to the moon for a long time.
More than a century has passed, yet the population of the planet only recovered to about one billion. This was far from being comparable to that of the past. Many places were still sparsely populated.
In the early stages of the development of Nova Terra, a large number of survivors on Earth were taken away. This included many talented individuals. This case of Brain Drain was another one of the reasons why the Earth has not been able to recover quickly from past conflicts.
It was not until around a hundred years ago that Nova closed its doors.
In addition, after the world war, the environment was also nearly irreparably damaged. It had yet to recover to its former glory.
Under the hazy moonlight, Wang Xuan’s movements suddenly accelerated, and with a bang, his right hand left a clear handprint on a big tree. The tree trembled violently, and yellow leaves rained down like a waterfall onto him.
Qin Cheng was shocked, “Sanjutsu, you actually managed to learn it? They will definitely regret giving up on you!”
