Kevin jumped down from the roof and happened to meet face-to-face with the black wolf who leaped up.
He hurriedly made a brake, but he followed the inertia and staggered forward a few steps because the speed was too fast. Only then was he able to endure it and stop the movement. Once he raised his head, it almost stuck to the tip of the black wolf’s nose.
Kevin, “…”
One person and one beast were in a deadlock and couldn’t react for a moment.
Kevin held his breath. He merely felt that for this brief period since he climbed up from underground, his life was so fucking unlucky. He might as well go back and stay underground!
The black wolf’s bloody red eyes shifted and suddenly became fierce. It hurled its pointed steely claws at Kevin.
Kevin raised his head, bent his knee, and knelt on the ground. He then turned his waist to dodge it and barely escaped from the danger. But before he could raise his waist, the black wolf’s claws came at him again.
“Step aside!”
Just by listening to the ‘thump’ sound of the strike, Kevin subconsciously squinted his eyes. Everything before his eyes suddenly became blurred.
The black wolf howled with fury as it was thrown to the side of a stone wall. Its huge and robust body directly knocked against the corner of the stone wall into collapsing, and the rubble fell straight down.
Oswald wiped the corner of his mouth. He instantly climbed from the ground and leaned at Kevin’s side to mock him. “Dear Fassbinder Excellency, with a short knife, would you still climb over the wall next time?”
“You’re still in a high spirit?” Kevin fiercely shoved him away. The two tried to slip away to the alley beside them and left the black wolf’s line of sight.
No one knew that after that thing fell at the wall, it would still let out a rhythmic growl from its throat. It also raised its head and howled.
Kevin was immediately stunned. He grabbed Oswald, who was going to run towards the alley, and shouted, “Don’t move!”
Previously, he couldn’t hear clearly because the inside of the casino was too noisy. He could finally hear the significant meaning of those ‘growl’ sounds. He couldn’t be more familiar with these rhythmic and low guttural sounds of growls and howls. These were the Giant Beastman Clan’s distinctive method to exchange messages on the battlefield, similar to a secret code. Except for those beasts of their clan, others wouldn’t be able to comprehend it completely.
He only knew that since this black wolf let out this kind of sound, it meant they wouldn’t be able to slip away to the alley anymore –
Just as expected, a shadow flashed in front of Kevin. That blind lion withdrew its front paws and jumped down from a low wall to the ground with a loud bang, exactly obstructing their only escape path.
“Fuck!” Oswald swore without the slightest dignity and self-consciousness of being an emperor. He burst out foul languages, subconsciously sticking himself back-to-back with Kevin.
The lion couldn’t see, and even its expression was still a little blank. Kevin had even suspected that it was really stupid. It only let out a little reaction as it heard the growls and howls let out by the black wolf as if it was made to follow those signals as a conditional reflex.
It firmly guarded Kevin and Oswald’s escape route.
The black wolf’s eyes were thoroughly red as if they would bleed. It was already extremely insane, but unexpectedly, it could still lead that half-stupid lion into being insane together. The two beasts that stood together could make up the height of two tall people, and they approached Kevin and Oswald bit by bit…
Their thick soles stomped on the ground quietly, and they were like the countdown to death.
Five meters, three meters…then suddenly pounced on!
The knife in Kevin’s hand moved like lightning, directly slicing the black wolf’s belly.
Just as the black wolf’s sharp claws had already pressed against Kevin’s face and Kevin’s knife blade had already pressed against its belly, a cry broke through the night and entered the ears of these two men and two beasts.
“Daddy!”
Kevin’s hand trembled at once and said in his heart: ‘Wasn’t this the little bastard that ran following Mio! Who did he confuse as his dad again?!’
The next second, he was knocked against something like a bullet that caused him to stagger backward and roll down with Oswald.
At the same time, chaotic footsteps came forth one after another onto their surroundings.
Kevin flipped over from the ground, sat down, and saw that the small squad of the Bronze Army had just come and were surrounding the two beasts. The little bastard turned back into beast form. It directly slapped the black wolf’s face onto the ground with one paw and pushed the blind lion aside, fiercely rubbing against it for a while before stopping.
This way of greeting was a bit too fierce and rough. Without confiscating the claws, they could tear apart a layer of flesh at any time.
“…” Mio led along a hippogriff, entered the alley, and stared at this chaotic situation for a long time. He finally found an entry point. “So…these two beasts had followed His Majesty tightly, but on the contrary, you guys had been left behind by His Majesty?”
The small squad of the Bronze Army, “…..”
The shadow inside their hearts at this moment could envelop the whole city.
Oswald didn’t care to admonish the small squad of the Bronze Army. With Kevin’s guarded movement that didn’t differentiate between enemy and ally, it was too normal for the small squad to be thrown off. At least, it was a near miss, and both of them were still alive and sat here. Compared with this, he was more concerned with those three giant beasts rolling together at present –
The little cub of unknown origin was indeed from Giant Beastman Clan, and he had even referred to that blind lion as his dad.
Oswald clicked his tongue and tilted his head at Kevin. “It looks like the one this little cub wants to find is this person…Where was the said family member that picked you up and took care of you for a few years? Hmm?”
Kevin’s face had been hit hard by the facts. As the jar had broken and fell again1, he acted shameless, “What hmm? You should resolve the matter at present before chatting about others.”
“You always have something to say,” Oswald snorted loudly to show his agreement and turned his head toward the little lion. “Tell them to change their form, or else my people won’t be able to withdraw their weapons at ease. Can you understand, little beast?”
The little lion changed back into the form of a little boy in an instant. He glanced left and right and shook his head. “I’m afraid that they can’t change at this moment.”
“Why?” Oswald frowned while asking.
Kevin answered on behalf of the little cub, “One is hungry. According to my understanding, when the Giant Beastman is extremely sick, it will maintain its beast form as an instinct, striving for some strength to defend itself. As for the other one…I suspect that it was fed with some drug. It isn’t far from going insane and too stimulated, so it cannot change its form.”
The little lion nodded to verify, saying, “Give him a few bites of meat, and I’ll call you second daddy!”
Kevin, “…” Your dad was just at the side; weren’t you afraid of being disowned speaking like this?
“What kind of mess is that?!” Oswald astonishingly looked at this little cub’s level of shamelessness. He waved his hand and let the small squad of the Bronze Army help the little cub move these two beasts into Yachaofei Temple.
“Why did he become like this? How did you guys run into my dad?” The little lion shook its tail and counted the number of wounds on his dad’s body. He completely forgot that there was still a pile of injuries that hadn’t healed on his own body.
Kevin and Oswald looked at each other and coincidently recalled those sentences by Bott – “We caught a wandering lion at the Skeleton Valley. It must have been lost, and it even relied on trash for a living.”
Nobody would feel comfortable hearing this kind of description, not to mention a seventh-or-eighth-year-old kid. So, they both chose to shut up and replied with a question. “How did you stray away from him?”
After getting along with Kevin and the others, this little cub seemed to grow a ‘spared the rod and spoiled the child’ gutsy attitude. On the contrary, he became obedient after founding back his dad; even that upheaval bird nest of hair seemed to be tamed a lot. He diligently held a stick of bone with dried meat and stuffed them into the lion’s mouth one by one.
The lion finished swallowing the last bit of meat; its ears trembled with fatigue and dozed off. After that, he wiped his hand and ran toward Kevin’s side.
The little cub propped himself on the chariot’s pedal and sat down, dangled his two legs, and said with a low voice. “Mac – Oh, that’s my dad, his…memory isn’t very good. He can’t remember many things, including what he had done before, what kind of person he met, and even where we lived. But, he would head out once he heard a growling sound, so we were constantly wandering off from each other. Luckily, I could always find him back. I dare to bet that he won’t remember ever meeting you guys after waking up.”
Kevin held the dried meat in his mouth and chewed it for a little while. Suddenly, he knitted his brows and lifted a hand to interrupt. “Wait, what was your dad’s name that you mentioned just now?”
“Mac.” The little cub answered. “Why?”
“I had met a person before, and he was also called this name…..” Kevin said while hesitating.
His interactions with the Giant Beastman Clan weren’t as much as with the Sand Ghosts, but he still knew much about them. Such as, although they belonged to a whole community, they usually didn’t like to gather together too much. They preferred to settle down alone. Only when they’re on high alert mode would they gather together to prepare for wars.
Because they didn’t pay close attention to relationships, they were also quite perfunctory about this kind of ‘alternative used to distinguish one another’ names. To Kevin’s knowledge, they liked to use a short monosyllable name that could be easily called, saving efforts and perfunctory.
This name ‘Mac,’ as it turned out, was one of the few that left an impression on Kevin. Furthermore, it was the one with the most profound impression.
This was the name of the appointed chief of the Giant Beastman Clan.
Probably ten years ago, Kevin had once seen his human form in the middle of the battlefield against the Sand Ghosts –
He was a tough man with golden-brown hair and short beard stubble. Due to the lineage from his clan, his body height could reach more than two meters when standing up. He stood up straight and steady like a mountain in front of the Giant Beastman’s troops like a muscular giant. Afterward, he led an army of valiant beast soldiers on his back and joined forces with Kevin’s Bronze Army. They had cleanly cleared all of the Sand Ghost’s troops.
The impression of that scene was too deep that Kevin could not connect that name with the currently snoring lion together.
Later, he had indeed heard about a rumor saying that the Sand Ghosts had plotted against Mac during one battle. There was a possibility that he couldn’t go to war anymore. The Giant Beastman Clan had always believed in the most primitive law of survival. So, Mac had become the former chief and then vanished without a trace…
The little lion scratched his head. “Also called this name? It was unlikely. Among the clan members that I knew, there wasn’t anyone with the same name as my dad.”
Then it was true.
Kevin watched that lion, and his mood was complicated for a while.
The black wolf at the side was currently drinking water added with sedatives. Its flavor was indeed not very good. After drinking two sips, it couldn’t help shaking its head, letting out an irritable purr, and growling as a habit.
The originally napping lion suddenly lifted its head. Its pair of run-through-scar-eyes unnaturally glued together. That weak limb tried hard to prop itself up a few times. Finally, it stood up from the ground.
It bent its waist, wanting to distinguish the message passed on from that growl while bracing itself for an attack. The little lion jumped down from the chariot and ran over while reassuring, “Dad, it’s me, Ben. There isn’t any sand ghost or anyone injured. I merely howled once. Would you rest for a little while more?”
The lion withdrew its claws at a loss. After the little lion had leaned over, it could slowly calm down. Using its foot to pat him twice, it laid down again.
Oswald squinted his eyes while watching them. He seemed to recall something. After a while, he raised his brows and muttered lowly. “Not bad. He could still remember his son.”
He was blinded in two eyes, limping on one leg, and his brain filled with blank white memory. There was a massive discrepancy with himself from ten years ago. He could only remember two things:
He was a warrior.
He had a son.
