<Hi, Nat. It's Hugh.>

I reread the text for the umpteenth time, my heart hammering in my chest as my finger hovered over the "send" button. I so didn't want to send it but I didn't really have a choice.

"Status," I said for like the five millionth time in the last forty-eight hours.

Yep. Still there. A level 1 System Administrator. Six stats, all zero. One skill.

All in all, there wasn't a lot of information to go on. If not for the quest I also received, I'd have been totally flummoxed. Quickly focusing on a desire to see the quest brought up another blue box.

"Okay," I told myself. "The most likely explanation for seeing a real litrpg blue box in front of me is that I'm totally nuts. This is all one big hallucination."

I couldn't be sure, though, and I needed to know. And the only way to figure it out was to invite a woman to accept the system, but it was difficult to imagine a situation where that invitation wouldn't require explaining what ENF meant to her.

Given the complete lack of context, I wasn't 100% certain what it stood for, but I was pretty sure that it meant Embarrassed Nude Female. From my forays on the wonderous world wide web, I was more than familiar with that particular category.

"When I explain all this, Natalie is going to think I'm a total creep. She’ll go, ‘You're into what?’ Pervert! Then she’ll tell my parents and everyone who knew me in high school and I’ll become a laughingstock."

The risk was too high.

But what was the alternative? Check myself into a mental hospital straight away? By talking to her, I’d at least find out for sure. If I sent her an invite and she saw a screen, that would be a pretty definitive answer that I wasn't nuts. If she couldn't, it would be time for the nice young men in their clean white coats to come and take me away.

My finger still hovered over the "send" button.

"There's no choice," I said. "I have to know, and Natalie is literally the only girl whose phone number I actually have."

She never would have gotten into this university without my help with SAT prep last year, but I'd still been surprised when she'd put her contact info into my phone and told me to keep in touch.

"Screw it. I'm doing it."

With a grimace, I tapped the button. Less than a minute later, I got a reply.

<Hey. What's up?>
