The Forty-first Day — Separation (1)

The next day, on a normal afternoon working day in NanJing Park, the sun shone brightly and the spring breeze was warm. Everywhere, uncles and aunties were dancing in the square, playing with fitness balls, and some were exercising Tai Chi. The sight was lively and it showed a perfect social harmony.

Liang Yan squatted on a small stone pillar in the park, the corners  of her mouth twitching as she watched the group dancing neatly on the square. The dance leader was an uncle, his graceful dance moves stood out in the group of aunts.

The park was full of older men and women, so no one would recognize her ven if Liang Yan looked up. Lu Lincheng also wore a hat, but occasionally, an elderly lady passing by would turn to look at him. Maybe because of familiarity or just him looking handsome.

Both of them deliberately dressed simply, wearing black clothes that were harmonious to the elderly people.

Some artists wrapped themselves really tightly with masks, hats, and sunglasses when they traveled, fearing someone would recognize them, but it only served to make them a light bulb in the crowd. With ordinary clothes like this, no one would care if a passerby looked like a star or not because everyone was busy with their own lives.

Liang Yan hummed along to the music echoing on the dance square for a while, then, finally, she looked up at Lu Lincheng: “Why did you tell me to come here?”

Lu Lincheng looked away and said, “To come to a place where you have been before, and it will help you recover your memory.”

He had consulted a few famous doctors in China and abroad. They said that repeating previously memorable scenes would stimulate memory recovery for a person with amnesia.

Over and over, Lu Lincheng wracked his brains about his memorable times with Liang Yan that was convenient to reenact and came up with this one.

Liang Yan assumed that he called her out for something big. She didn’t want to force herself to recover from her amnesia. She didn’t know why Lu Lincheng was so enthusiastic about her recovery, so she jumped off the stone and asked, “I was here with you?”

Lu Lincheng reached out for her wrists. “Come with me.”

Liang Yan dodged, obviously a bit unhappy, so she put a little distance between them and looked around. “Pulling and pulling, what if a camera captures us?” Although only aunts and uncles were here, what if the elderly still maintained her childlike innocence and were chasing stars? They just got divorced and were photographed together, what would it look like?

Lu Lincheng reached out but was only able to grab the air. He twisted his fingers and said, “Alright.”

Both of them walked unhurried around the artificial lake in the park twice.

Lu Lincheng walked the slowest, recalling that this was the most romantic thing he did with Liang Yan. In the past, Liang Yan invited him to this park. She patted her chest and assured him that most people here were the elderly and that no one would recognize them and secretly take a photograph.

In response to her statement, he just frowned while looking at Liang Yan thumping her chest. After that, he reluctantly accompanied her to walk around the artificial lake twice.

While they walked back then, he remembered Liang Yan kept talking. Whether it was intentional or not on her side, he resolutely ignored her.

After walking the second time, Lu Lincheng stared at Liang Yan’s face, asking cautiously, “How is it, do you remember anything?”

Liang Yan turned to him slowly with a detailed look on her face that conveyed, “Am I supposed to remember something?”

He froze for a few moments before asking, “Should we go around two more times?”

Liang Yan gazed at him deeply, and couldn’t help but say, “Lu Lincheng, it seems you have a lot of free time.” So, he told her to come here to help recover her — the ex-wife’s — memory? When did a superstar’s time become so useless?

Leisurely Lu Lincheng: “………………”

Liang Yan had to endure walking for a while with Lu Lincheng, confused. Were they searching for her memory or was Lu Lincheng just looking for her? While walking, they met a mother and child. The two kept staring at Lu Lincheng as they passed by. The mother couldn’t help but come closer with the child in tow to ask, “Excuse me, are you Lu Lincheng?”

Who mentioned that no one would recognize them? People still did! Luckily, they kept their distance from each other, and the mother only noticed Lu Lincheng. Immediately, Liang Yan walked away as if she didn’t know Lu Lincheng.

Lu Lincheng glanced at Liang Yan who had walked far, slipping away before slightly nodding to the mother and child.

“Shhh…” Lu Lincheng gestured just before the mother screamed her heart out.

The child’s mother covered her mouth hurriedly.

Lu Lincheng was very experienced in dealing with fans and comfortably signed an autograph for the child’s mother, declined to take a group photo, and then sent her away before checking for Liang Yan’s whereabouts and realizing that she left him alone.

His phone received a message.

Liang Yan: [I have something going on. I’m leaving first.]

Lu Lincheng held onto his phone, depressed.

Actually, Liang Yan was still in the park and didn’t leave first. She just felt that it was too retarded to walk around the lake searching for her memories. When she found the opportunity to leave, she bolted away. Then, seeing that the weather was perfect, she took the chance to wander around in the park.

Liang Yan walked back to the square where she watched those seniors dance.

The music in the square was still in full swing, but no one danced. Instead, they have gathered around in a circle as if something happened.

Liang Yan rushed to them and found an old lady with the same dance uniform as the others clutching her chest on the ground, unconscious.

The elderlies dancing with her also panicked.

Liang Yan was also surprised, but upon seeing the old ladies with her who were panicking and wasn’t doing anything, the training she received during filming kicked in. Liang Yan stepped forward and remembered how to perform CPR. She felt the old lady’s carotid artery for a pulse and while doing this, she turned to the crowd and said, “Call 120!”

“Yes! I’ll call right away!” Some people woke up from the panic and fumbled for their cellphone to call.

Liang Yan couldn’t feel the old lady’s pulse, so if she delayed any further, the old lady’s life would be in grave danger. Liang Yan no longer hesitated, she kneeled on the ground and performed CPR.
