Chapter 112: 112 – General Aquila

Crown Princess Pica couldn't bear it anymore. Ignoring her father, King Corvus, who was sending her warning looks, she rushed to the man still kneeling in front of Raven and threw her arms around him.

"Aqi, Aqi, Aqi! You're still alive! Thank heavens, thank heavens!!" she cried, and burst into tears.

Raven had never seen his mother in such a state. A strange feeling passed over his heart as he saw her kneeling on the ground, hugging a man who had absolutely no memory of her. With a start, he realised that this strange feeling was pity – yes, he, who had always been terrified of his mother until recently…at the moment, all he could feel for her was pity. There was no hiding the pain and love in Crown Princess Pica's voice as she cried over the lost General Aquila.

It also made Raven wonder that if his own father, Head Sage Yue, had not treated his mother so badly – would she have regarded him with as much affection as she did to Rook? Hadn't Crown Princess Pica at least done her best to save the life of her newborn son Raven when Head Sage Yue and the others in the Moon Temple had been anxious to kill both mother and child – especially the child? And hadn't General Aquila been the one who had finally saved Crown Princess Pica and the infant Raven…?

Looking at it this way – didn't Raven owe his life to General Aquila? And while Raven didn't have a very strong impression of the man from the first two years of his life – he did remember big, warm hands taking care of him when he was ill. There was a vague sense of familiarity when he was faced with this man, and it was a good feeling, like that of stability, reliability and protection.

The log lost General Aquila seemed to be in a shock when faced with a crying Crown Princess Pica. There was apparent distress on his face and he looked rather helpless.

The manager of the inn, on the other hand, was jumping around excitedly. "Nemo – our Nemo – is actually General Aquila?! We always thought he was extraordinary in his bearing and temperament…but he actually turned out to be such a hero! General Aquila! Heavens! General Aquila lived with us for ten years! Ooh! Nemo, you turned out to be such a bigshot!!" he cried, clapping his hands in delight.

General Aquila, who was still on the floor, rubbed his temples in frustration. He could feel something trying to break through into his mind and he didn't know what to do with it, because there was something else in his mind trying to block the incoming memories.

As a result, General Aquila was in great pain. He couldn't help but let out a groan and clutched his head.

Crown Princess Pica was immediately anxious. "Aqi? Aqi, are you all right?" she asked worriedly.

"Pica…?" General Aquila asked in a whisper. "Pica…?"

Then he let out a strangled cry and fainted.

Crown Princess Pica was panicking now. "Father, Father! Look at Aqi! What's wrong with him? He recognised me right now, didn't he?! What happened to him? Why did he faint?!" she cried anxiously. "Help him, Father!"

Seeing his mother in such a state, Rook, too, burst into tears and tugged at King Corvus's sleeve. "Grandfather – grandfather, you can help him, can't you…?" he asked in a small, shaky voice.

King Corvus looked rather helpless at the moment. He had no idea what to do. He walked over to his daughter and the limp form of General Aquila, and checked over the man. Then his face darkened.

"We need a healer for him," King Corvus said. "He is under the influence of a forbidden curse, and all the magic in his has pooled in self-defence to protect his life. His memory loss seems to be linked to this. Just now, when he recognised Pica – that balance was disturbed."

"What do we do, Father?" Crown Princess Pica asked. "I can't lose him again, Father. Aqi…we just found Aqi…we can't lose him again…not again!"

King Corvus put his arm around his daughter's shoulders and comforted her. Perhaps for the first time in many, many years, Crown Princess Pica rested her head on her father's shoulder and cried her heart out. With a soft expression on his face, King Corvus, too, pulled her close and rubbed her back to soothe her – like he used to do when she was a naughty child that barely reached his knees. He wondered idly if his daughter even remembered those days.

Rook wasn't in any better shape than his mother, and with a little push from Raven, Rook, too, was taken into King Corvus's arms in a three-generation hug.

King Jaren, Mana, Raven and Azar knelt on the floor to examine General Aquila. The manager of the inn hovered worriedly around them, concerned for the man who had been in his family for ten years, and intimidated by the presence of so many eminent royal persons in his little inn.

"We're sorry to have bothered you," King Jaren said politely. "I assure you that we will compensate you for any loss of business you may have suffered due to our intrusion."

The manager of the inn was stunned for a moment and then shook his head violently. "No, no, Your Majesty, I can't possibly…we didn't even open for the day yet! And besides, Nemo has been a member of our family for ten years now! He's just like a brother to me! My daughters call him Uncle Nemo, even!" He bit his lip nervously. "Will he…will he be all right?"

"We hope so, certainly," King Jaren replied. "We will have our imperial physicians look at him right away, and he will most certainly have the best care he needs to recuperate."

The manager sighed in relief. "Good," he murmured. "Thank you, Your Majesty." Then he hesitated for a while and finally asked, "Could we…could we see him again, sometimes? The children are very fond of him…and so is my father…"

"I'm sure he'll want to speak to you himself once he wakes up," King Jaren replied.
