"We…I…" Raven stammered weakly. "I don't know what happened," he said. He leaned heavily against King Jaren.
"I'm not sure what happened, either," Mana said softly, her voice as weak as Raven's. She was still being supported by Crown Princess Pica.
King Jaren picked up Raven and deposited him on a long couch gingerly. Then he walked over to Mana, picked her up and put her on the couch right next to Raven. Azar immediately dove between the two of them possessively. Mana and Raven chuckled lightly and stroked the little dragon's smooth, dark scales.
Imperial Physician Kale went to check on General Aquila while Junior Imperial Physician Vale checked on Mana and Raven first. Then the two imperial physicians exchanged their places and patients.
"Princess Mana and Prince Raven are fine; it's just that they used up a lot of their magical energy just now," Imperial Physician Kale announced. "I'd recommend a hearty meal and plenty of rest, especially since you have the banquet tomorrow evening."
King Jaren heaved a sigh of relief. So did the others.
"This gentleman, on the other hand," Imperial Physician Kale said, pointing at General Aquila's limp form. "He's been under a very powerful dark curse for at least ten years. Did he lose his memories?" he asked.
King Jaren quickly explained what had happened, without disclosing the name of General Aquila.
Imperial Physician Kale frowned and checked General Aquila again. Then he said, "It will take him some time to recover. He will be physically fine in a few days, but it will take him quite some time to recuperate fully mentally and magically. His psyche may not be very stable at the moment."
"I'll stay with him," Crown Princess Pica said immediately.
"Me too," Rook said.
Imperial Physician Kale sighed. "I'm afraid it isn't that simple," he said. "His magic, which had been dormant for ten years because of sealing off the dark curse along with his memories, is suddenly rushing back to its full power…and he's got very powerful magic."
King Corvus nodded. "He's always been very powerful," he said.
"Now, because his magic is unstable by itself, the fealty token – at least I believe it is something similar to a fealty token – has kicked into defence mode, and reacted with the master token, which I believe is with Prince Raven and Princess Mana," Imperial Physician Kale continued.
A sea of blank, uncomprehending faces greeted him.
Imperial Physician Kale sighed. "This means that until this man's magic stabilises – and it will take at least a few weeks to do so – he must remain in the vicinity of Prince Raven and Princess Mana," he explained. "The fealty token is protecting him and helping him repair his magic – its activation takes a lot of magic, and that's why Prince Raven and Princess Mana are feeling weak at the moment."
"What about his memory…?" Crown Princess Pica asked shakily. "Will he ever recover his memory?"
"He will have remembered everything by the time he wakes up," Imperial Physician Kale told her.
"Will he be fit enough to travel with us next week?" King Jaren asked.
"He's fit as a fiddle as long as you keep him in within a hundred feet of Prince Raven and Princess Mana," Imperial Physician Kale said. "Also, this is only temporary. Once his magic becomes stable by itself, he will be perfectly fine."
Then, looking at King Jaren's worried face, Imperial Physician Kale said generously, "I'll sent Vale with you – he'll be at hand if something unexpectedly comes up. Don't worry, Vale is fully equipped to deal with this stuff."
King Jaren and the others looked at Junior Imperial Physician Vale, who flushed in embarrassment.
"I assure you that I can take care of it," he said.
King Jaren nodded in satisfaction. "Thank you, Junior Imperial Physician Vale," he said politely.
"I believe the real people we need to thank here are Prince Raven and Princess Mana," Junior Imperial Physician Vale said modestly. "Without their magic, this man would be very seriously ill for a very long time. As Imperial Physician Kale mentioned, it is the defence system of the fealty token that has effectively saved this man's life."
Crown Princess Pica and Rook immediately rushed over to Mana and Raven and grabbed their hands.
"Thank you," Crown Princess Pica breathed. "Raven, Mana, thank you. I can't thank you enough even with my life," she said. "Aqi…you have no idea what he means to me."
"Big Brother Raven, Sister Mana…thank you for saving him," Rook said tearfully.
Seeing that some confidential information was about to leak out if they stayed in the room any longer, Imperial Physician Kale and Junior Imperial Physician Vale inclined their heads at King Jaren and withdrew silently.
King Jaren immediately placed a sound barrier in the room. "We may speak freely now," he said.
King Corvus shot him a thankful glance.
"You have earned yourself a very powerful ally, my boy," King Corvus told Raven.
Raven shook his head. "Not just an ally," he murmured. "I remember him a little…he used to look after me when I was sick, didn't he?"
King Corvus nodded. "I'm surprised that you can remember," he murmured. "You were very small at the time…but you're right. Aqi was the one who looked after you whenever he could, especially since Pica was comatose and severely ill for a long time."
A small smile spread on Raven's face. "I remember big, warm hands and a gentle baritone singing a lullaby…" he said wistfully. "I don't remember too much…but I wish I could."
"He would have been your father as much as Rook's, if he hadn't been lost at sea all those years ago," King Corvus said with a sigh. "Still, finding Aqi here like this – I can only say that fate seems to be favouring you very much, little Raven. You have become a blessed child since you set foot in the Emerald Kingdom and met Princess Mana, it seems."
"We are the ones who are blessed to have Raven with us," Mana replied promptly.
"Mana is right," King Jaren said, looking at King Corvus.. "But I don't think you're wrong, either."
