"No, you guys can go ahead," King Jaren said, ruffling Mana and Raven's hairs simultaneously.
"Thanks, Papa!" Mana said happily and pulled Raven's arm. "Come on, Raven – Big Brother and Big Sister Bella will be wondering where we disappeared to!"
"See you Mommy! See you Daddy!" Azar flapped his wings cheerfully and returned to his usual spot on King Jaren's shoulder.
"Don't you want to go with your Mommy and Daddy, little one?" King Jaren asked, rubbing the little dragon's head with gentle fingers.
The baby dragon shook his head. "Azar will stay with Grandpapa!" he declared. "Grandpapa, hungry!"
King Jaren chuckled and shot Queen Carolina a helpless look.
Queen Carolina was quite amused as well. "Well, we can't let our lovely Royal Dragon Prince Azar go hungry now, can we? Come on, then, I'll treat you to some delicacies of the Sapphire Kingdom, little Azar!" she said.
The little dragon beamed at her. "Azar liked pretty Grandmother Carolina!" he announced cheerfully.
Queen Carolina laughed in delight and led the group of adults away, while Mana led Raven away to her own imperial guest chamber.
Jules and Bella were waiting for them, looking a tad anxious by now.
"What happened?" Jules asked immediately as soon as they entered. "What took the two of you so long? Did Raven go off on some stupid self sacrificing tangent yet again?" Jules demanded worriedly, his different coloured eyes looking as sharp as gemstones in the sunlight as he raked his gaze over the two younger children, clearly checking for injuries.
Mana chuckled. "You're right, Big Brother. He was trying to do exactly that!" she said, selling out her young fiancé without any qualms at all.
"I wasn't sacrificing myself," Raven defended himself in a small voice. "I was just…"
Mana and Jules and Bella rolled their eyes collectively.
Raven flushed. "Look, I'm not the kind and self sacrificing creature with a bleeding heart that you guys think I am – I just like to be nice to people I care about, and that's all that I was trying to do…" he murmured faintly.
"Yes, right, you were planning to drain your own magic to fortify that rainbow magic net of ours for as long as necessary without even telling me about it," Mana snapped. "If it hadn't been pointed out to you that your life and your soul are tied with mine, and that any damage to your magic or your soul would affect me directly – you would have gone and done it anyway, right? And on top of that, you even wanted to try your hand at necromancy! What if Azar and Papa hadn't been there to stop you?!" she asked angrily, her emerald eyes blazing, and the amber specks in her irises burning like fire.
"It wasn't like that…" Raven murmured half heartedly, trying very hard to ignore the utterly horrified looks on the faces of Big Brother Jules and Big Sister Bella.
Mana glared at him. "If you had not been specifically told that your life is tied with mine, and that if you damage your own magic or your own soul – I will bear the same amount of damage to my magic and to my soul – and that if you get yourself killed, then I, too, will drop dead – would you have stopped considering your stupid plan of trying to do everything all by yourself? And what about your crazy idea about trying necromancy? Wouldn't you still be considering it very seriously?!" she asked, her angry voice rising by the end of her speech.
Raven sighed tiredly. "It wasn't that I was trying to harm myself or anything. I just wanted to help in any way that I could," he murmured. "Don't get so angry, Mana."
"Oh, really," Mana hissed coldly. "Then, pray tell me, if I wasn't in the picture at all, if your life wasn't tied to mine at all – would you have done it or would you not?" Ice dripped from her voice.
Raven looked rather conflicted. He couldn't honestly answer in the negative. Even he knew that he would at least have made an attempt to solve the issue by himself if it had been merely his own life at stake. But now that he knew that Mana would be affected directly and proportionately by harm that he suffered – he was determined not to take any unnecessary risks until he could figure out a way to do things without affecting his beloved Mana. Raven could barely bear it when Mana got a small paper cut or bumped her knee into a chair – how could he bear to put her life and magic and soul at risk?
Raven's silence was answer enough for Mana to know what the boy was thinking. She exploded.
"It's like you're trying to go and get yourself killed in every way possible! Is your life so bad? Do you want to run away so urgently? What is it that you're running away from? Me? The Emerald Kingdom? What is it that you don't like? What is it that we need to do – that I need to do – to keep you with me?" Mana cried helplessly, and then she burst into tears.
Jules immediately pulled his beloved little sister into a hug and glared at Raven. Bella looked rather angry as well.
"Is our affection not adequate for you, Raven?" Bella asked in a frosty voice. "Do tell – what is it that you need that we are failing to give you that you must find yourself compelled to disregard your own health and safety and life every single time a problem arises or whenever we are faced with a dangerous situation?"
Raven could feel Mana's distress in his heart, and it felt like there were daggers stabbing into his chest repeatedly.
He shook his head. "It's not that," he said urgently. "Mana, please – it's not that I want to get myself killed – it's – it's just that I tend to go a little overboard at times because I am so desperate to protect you…! Please, Mana – it's not that I want to leave you or that I'm unhappy with you – it's not like that at all!"
Mana ignored Raven's plea. She buried her head in her big brother's broad chest and cried – partly out of anger, partly out of fear, and partly out of grief.
Upon finding that Mana was ignoring him, Raven turned to Bella desperately, his own rainbow eyes brimming with tears. "Big Sister Bella – it's not like that," he whispered hoarsely. "It's not that your affection is inadequate – it's so much more than what I deserve! It is me who is inadequate and pathetic and I'm always relying on you guys like a helpless chicken but you all are so nice and I just want to help out in any way I can and I don't want to lose your affection or regard and I just…" he trailed off into silence, his incoherent, desperate pleas breaking down and then Raven, too, burst into tears.
Jules and Bella exchanged a worried glance, and then Jules handed Mana to Bella and went up to pull Raven into a hug, rubbing soothing circles upon his back. Bella did the same to Mana.
When the two younger children finally stopped crying, Jules said to Raven in a quiet voice, "Raven – now that you know any harm that comes your way will also affect Mana – at least that should be enough of a deterrent for you to take better care of yourself, if nothing else – right? Would you promise me this now, going forward? You promised me that you will cherish my little sister for the rest of your lives and that you will spare no efforts in taking care of her – and now that taking care of yourself is an essential part of taking care of her – you'll do that, right? For me, for Mana, for all of us?"
Raven nodded tearfully. Then he raised his head to look up at the Big Brother Jules he admired so much and met Jules's sharp gaze with a determined one of his own.
"I promise, Big Brother," he said in a solemn voice. "Unless it is for Mana's sake, I won't let myself get hurt."
Mana finally raised her head and turned around to look at her young fiancé. "Do you really mean that?" she asked in a whisper.
"I do," Raven said seriously. "Have I ever broken any of my promises to you, Mana?" he asked in a grave voice.
Mana shook her head. He really hadn't – for such a small boy, he was definitely very extraordinary when it came to keeping his word. If Raven promised something – he would honour his promise no matter what. All of them had realised this, and therefore, no one in the royal family of the Emerald Kingdom tried to make Raven promise anything unless it was something absolutely essential.
And this time, it really was essential – in fact, it couldn't be more essential than this, could it? What could be more important than life itself?
