Now, Mana had inside information from 'The Legend of Mars' which always described the evil emperor Raven as 'a tall, slim man with a beautiful face and no heart' – now, Mana would definitely argue that Raven was neither evil nor did he have no heart – in fact, in her eyes, it was other way round; if anything, Mana would say that Raven had too much heart – but then, while good and evil were variables based on perspective, tall and slim meant tall and slim. And no one with eyes would ever be able to call Raven ugly.
Seeing his worried little face now while he was comparing his own height with his younger (and taller) half brother Rook, and the older (and taller) brother in law Jules, Mana felt rather amused.
"Don't worry," she said to her little fiancé. "You will always be tall enough for me."
And she couldn't bear to say it out loud that he was not tall just now simply because he had been undernourished for so many years. Now that he had Mana and her Big Brother Jules and their Papa King Jaren to feed him properly and fatten him up nicely, Raven was filling out very nicely. He was still on the slimmer side, and he was not as tall as he would probably like to be yet, but that would be rectified soon. Raven had already grown a fair bit in the months that he had spent with them.
"But my biological isn't as tall as Father Aqi or Papa…" Raven murmured defeatedly.
"Well, I suppose Rook will be taller than you anyway," Mana said. "Father Aqi is the tallest man I've ever seen, so it is natural that Rook will be taller than others when he grows up, too."
Raven's shoulders slumped.
"But that doesn't mean that you will be short, either. Isn't your mother tall? And your grandfather is quite tall, too, isn't he?" Mana pointed out.
"But…" Raven began, only to be cut off by Rook.
"You will be tall, Big Brother Raven," Rook said firmly. "Grandfather told me once that anyone who has even a tiny bit of the blood of the royal family of the Obsidian Kingdom will always be tall because it is in the blood – and half your blood is the same as mine, so you are definitely going to be tall like the rest of us!"
"We will add two extra glasses of milk and two extra eggs to your daily diet," Bella spoke up. "That will nourish your bones and make you grow faster as well, Raven."
"And sword training also stretches your bones and muscles, so our regular morning practice will also help you grow your height," Jules added.
"And, in the end, no matter how tall or short you are, you're still going to be my treasured fiancé Raven, aren't you? It's not like a few inches here or there would make that much of a difference!" Mana wrapped up the discussion with her final words. "And I know for sure that you will be tall!"
Raven stared at Mana silently for a while and then asked hesitantly, "How are you so sure? Is it – is it mentioned in that…?"
Mana clearly understood that he was referring to the book, the existence of which she had revealed to him earlier.
Well, if some good was going to come out of that problematic book, Mana would definitely take it with both hands happily and promptly.
"Yes," she said. "Do you believe me now?"
Raven nodded.
And just like that, the matter came to an end, much to everyone's relief.
Jules clapped his hands. "All right, let's not chit chat any longer. Bella and Rook, come on, let's go and leave Mana and Raven to get some rest, all right?" he suggested.
"Yes, Big Brother Jules!" Rook said immediately.
Bella nodded as well, and the three of them went off, bidding a hasty farewell to Mana and Rook and urging them to have a good rest until it was time for dinner.
Mana turned to Raven after they left and patted his face gently. "Are you feeling better now?" she asked in a soft voice.
"Much better," Raven murmured. "I'm sorry I'm not strong enough yet to be able to perform such a spell without tiring myself out."
Mana flicked him in the middle of his forehead. "What nonsense are you talking about now? Most full fledged grown ups can't even perform this magic – and you are only twelve and you were still able to perform it perfectly. Isn't that already extraordinary enough?" she demanded.
Mana sat down next to him and nudged him with her elbow.
"That isn't what you are worried about, is it?" she asked shrewdly. "So, what is it that's worrying my dear fiancé so?"
Raven hesitated.
"Tell me," Mana said, pinching his fair cheeks in a playful manner and turning his head around to face her.
Raven still hesitated for a moment, and then asked in a nervous whisper, "What will you do if your mother, Queen Dora, doesn't like me?"
Mana frowned. "Why do you ask that?" she questioned in a flat voice. Had this sensitive boy already picked up something from Queen Dora's demeanour earlier?
"I don't think she likes me very much," he murmured. "She was probably ok with me earlier, but after what happened today, I don't think she likes me any more. May be she feels that I recklessly put you in danger by casting that spell?"
Mana sighed. "I know that you will never put me in danger – honestly, Raven, do you think Papa and Big Brother Jules and Father Aqi would stand by idly if you or I were in danger?" she asked.
"Papa and Big Brother Jules and Father Aqi trust me," Raven said.
"And so do I," Mana replied.
"But – but what if your mother doesn't? What if she doesn't trust me and doesn't like me? What will you do then?" Raven asked.
There was more than a hint of fear in his rainbow eyes, and it made Mana's heart ache for him. This dear child, starved of affection for so long…
Mana pulled him into a hug and rubbed his back in soothing and gentle motions.
"How does it matter whether she likes you or not?" Mana whispered in his ear. "You are going to marry me, not my mother. As long as I like you, should you be bothered about others?"
Raven's ears turned red at Mana's words, but the fear in his heart was not completely gone. "But your mother is an important person to you and to Big Brother Jules and to Papa. If she doesn't like me, then would you all continue to like me? Would Papa and Big Brother Jules still allow us to be together?" he murmured in a voice so soft that it was almost inaudible.
Mana sighed. "Raven, my dear fiancé, the whole world knows that Princess Mana of the Emerald Kingdom is crazy about her genius fiancé Prince Raven of the Obsidian Kingdom," she told him. "Why are you, who should know the most about how much I adore you, worried that I would let other people influence my opinion of you?" she asked crossly. "And you know fond of you Papa and Big Brother are."
Raven chose to remain silent, but his cheeks were as warm as his heart when he listened to her words.
"Besides," Mana said. "Have you forgotten that we are fated soulmates?" she demanded. "Even if someone wants to, they are never going to be able to tear us apart. For better or worse, my dear Raven, you are stuck with me for life."
Raven looked up at that, his eyes shining brightly. "Do you mean that? Do you really mean that, Mana?" he asked softly. "Even if there are other people – even important people – who don't want us to be together – would you still stick with me?"
Mana flicked his forehead again. "Of course I will," she snapped. "Haven't you been listening to me at all? You're never going to be able to get rid of me!"
Raven grinned. "Why would I ever want to get rid of you?" he said lightly. "Am I not desperately trying to keep you by my side all the time?"
Mana hummed. "And you'd better stay right by my side for the rest of our lives," Mana said imperiously. "If you dare to wander off…" she trailed off dangerously, the threat hanging in the air.
Raven burst out laughing. "Yes, my princess, as you wish," he said. Then he took her hand and brought it to his lips, pressing a reverent kiss to the back of her hand in a very innocent but very gentlemanly manner.
Mana could clearly feel her heart skip a beat at this sweet gesture of the precious boy in front of her. What a charmer he was turning out to be, she thought!
