Mana, Raven and Jules settled into their life at IMARI pretty quickly. Mana was very impressed with Professor Bella and how well she conducted her classes. Even Mana, who didn't have much interest in IMARI and was mostly here to accompany her fiancé and her brother, couldn't help but develop an interest in the workings of magical appliances!

No wonder she was the most popular teacher at IMARI. Even though she was serious and aloof and didn't mingle much with either the students or the other teachers…she was unfailingly courteous and very helpful. She also taught very well and honestly, Mana felt that her brilliance outshone Fox's and was nearer to Raven's.

Jules was easily the most dedicated student in Professor Bella's class. Mana felt quite lost when Jules and Professor Bella started discussing technical things, but soon realised that other than Fox and Raven, no one else in the entire class could understand, either. Thankfully, Professor Bella realised this almost immediately, and thereafter, these passionate discussions were conducted in a meeting room after class hours. Fox and Raven listened to Jules and Professor Bella discuss passionately with great interest, and sometimes, even had an input or two. Mana often dozed off with Azar in her arms.

Speaking of which, the little dragon had taken a great liking to Professor Bella as well, and vice versa. Professor Bella's stern face would melt into a beautiful smile whenever Azar greeted her enthusiastically as 'Auntie Bella' – and it made Mana even surer than ever before that Professor Bella was hiding her beauty with great effort. Someone with such a lovely smile couldn't help but be attractive!

With Professor Bella's help, and the active involvement of Jules and Raven, Fox's blueprints of the communication devices were improved rapidly. In less than a month, they already had a working model that was quite similar to a rudimentary mobile phone. The only problem was that it wasn't fully functional yet. They got the sound to work, but it wasn't too great, and image transmission didn't work at all.

"I don't know why it isn't working," Fox said, frustrated.

"It may be that we're not activating it properly," Jules said with a frown.

"Or, perhaps, we're not merging the different magical elements appropriately," Professor Bella murmured, looking over the complex calculations again.

Mana, who had been listening half-heartedly, murmured absently in a daze, "Sound waves need a medium to travel but get absorbed on the way, but light can travel in vacuum."

Professor Bella, Fox and Jules stared at her in confusion.

"Sound waves…? Vacuum?" Jules asked.

Raven frowned. "That makes sense…Big Brother, you know how soldiers put their ears to the ground to find gauge the approach of an army…?" he asked.

Jules's eyes lit up immediately, grasping the concept.

"Vacuum should be an empty space where nothing exists…we can use my dark magic to create it!" Raven said eagerly. "If we wrap up the sound produced at one end of the device with magic, and then transport it through space to the other end and activate it, we should be able to keep the original sound quality!"

Professor Bella and Fox stared at Raven in awe.

"Bravo!" Jules said, clapping the younger boy's shoulder. "Our little Raven is amazing!"

"It was Mana's idea," Raven said modestly.

"But you're the only one who understood what she said, and were able to immediately figure out a solution!" Fox said excitedly, entering his fanboy mode.

Professor Bella nodded and grabbed a sheet of paper. "Well done!" she told Raven and started making notes on how to get it done and calculating adjustments to be made to the magical element proportions to make use of this new concept.

Raven thought for a moment. "What if we modify a copying machine first?" he asked. "Right now, we can only copy images – but if we can modify it to include sound as well, we can wrap up both the sound and the images together and send it through space to the other end of the device!"

Professor Bella frowned. "Like a transportation array? But arrays need a fixed point to work, and if we need to transport an array from one point to another, we must capture it with very powerful magic and then take it physically to another point."

Fox, Jules and Raven already had some experience with this. Fox quickly explained his propulsion machine that could cut down the travel time – but it wouldn't be useful here.

"We don't need to transport the arrays themselves," Raven said, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "What if we merged a transportation array to only transmit this little packet of sound and images produced by our modified copying machine? Since we're not transporting living things or physical things with any weight, we don't need to use a propulsion machine – I can add dark magic to create this space…tunnel sort of thing. Our packet can reach the recipient in an instant, and the receptor device can activate it…"

Mana had already dozed off by now and had no idea that her brilliant fiancé had just shown off his talent and intelligence to three geniuses, and the other three had been shocked speechless.

Then Jules lifted Raven in his arms and spun him around like a small child. "You brilliant little thing!" he cried in delight. "Raven, you're magnificent!"

Fox's eyes sparkled manically. "Absolutely!" he said eagerly. "You're wonderful! I think we can manage to make this actually work!"

Professor Bella nodded excitedly, a broad grin on her face, making her look stunning despite the big glasses she was wearing.

The three boys were stunned for a moment, especially Jules, whose ears turned red immediately.

Raven glanced at Mana furtively, only to realise that she was fast asleep. Disappointment flooded his heart suddenly, making him feel strange.

Jules, being the sensitive creature he was, noticed Raven's disappointment immediately.

"Hey, Mana!" he called loudly. "Wake up, sleepyhead!"

Mana and Azar raised their heads and stared at Jules with matching eyes filled with dissatisfaction, clearly not pleased with being awakened abruptly.

Jules ignored the grievance in their eyes. "How can you be sleeping carelessly when your Raven just made ground-breaking progress on the communication device?" he demanded. "You should have seen him just now – he was mind-blowing!"

Mana's eyes brightened immediately. "You figured it out?" she asked Raven with a big smile.

Raven nodded shyly. "Thanks to you telling us about sound waves and vacuum," he said.

"Huh? I said something?" Mana blinked in confusion. "Sorry, I was half asleep…"

"Maybe we should let her be half asleep all the time so that she can murmur these secret concepts which only Raven can understand!" Fox declared.

"Don't say that," Professor Bella muttered. "I might really be tempted to do so…"

Mana ignored the others and walked up to Raven. "Congratulations," she said with a smile. "I'm very proud of you, Raven." She kissed him on both cheeks and then gave him a hug.

Azar, who didn't understand much except that Raven had done something good, launched himself at his beloved Daddy. "Daddy great and powerful! Azar proud of Daddy!" he announced happily and then copied Mana's actions to kiss Raven on both cheeks.

Jules, Fox and Professor Bella burst out laughing. In fact, Professor Bella laughed so hard that her glasses fell off, revealing a gorgeous face.

Everyone froze at the sight.

Azar was the first one to react. "Auntie Bella so pretty!" he said happily.

Professor Bella's honeyed skin acquired a rather fetching shade of red.

"Now that's what I meant by a face that launches a thousand ships when I mentioned it earlier," Mana said to Raven and Jules. "She has to be the most beautiful woman I've ever seen!"

"I don't really understand much or care much about beauty," Fox said. "But Professor Bella, your face is quite well shaped and symmetrical. You don't need to hide it, you know?"

"Do you…not like people complimenting your appearance?" Raven asked quietly.

Professor Bella nodded and looked away.

Mana frowned. "But, Professor Bella, you're such a genius and an amazing teacher already – does it matter that you're also so beautiful to look at?" she asked. "Isn't it a good thing?"

Jules, who had been speechless with shock until now, strode forward determinedly, picked up Professor Bella's fallen glasses and handed them back to her.

"It is Professor Bella's choice to showcase her beauty or not," he said firmly, glaring at the others. "Don't embarrass her."

Professor Bella was quite startled by his words. She looked at tall young man who stood protectively in front of her, as if ready to shield her from whatever danger she may face…

For the first time in her life, Professor Bella felt a slight movement in her heart that wasn't caused by an exciting development in her field of work.

"It's all right, Crown Prince Jules," she said softly. "I mostly hide my face because no one takes my work seriously when they see my true appearance."

Jules frowned. "Who dares?!" he thundered, looking so much like King Jaren at the moment that Mana felt her Papa had appeared in the room.

Professor Bella laughed.. "I've become used to keeping this appearance for such a long time…but now that I've already made a name for myself with my work along…perhaps I don't need to hide anymore."
