Even after Mana's less than polite welcome, Crown Prince Mars didn't give up trying to persuade her to be his concubine. Instead of paying attention to his fiancée Princess Astra, he would wander about the imperial palace searching for Mana, undeterred by the imperial guards who refused to let him enter the personal chambers of anyone except Princess Astra, exactly as Raven had instructed. However, Mars would simply hand around in the permitted areas, waiting for Mana to appear, just so that he could waylay her.
One week later, Mana decide she'd had enough of this nonsense. Just the previous evening, Raven had soundly beaten Mars in a swordplay match, and the day before, Jules had done the same. Bella had frozen Mars into an icicle and stuck him on Astra's door a couple of times already, and Azar had almost made him into roast meat at least half a dozen times. If barbequing Mars wouldn't have resulted in an international incident that would derail their own engagement plans, Mana and Raven would have happily let Azar burn Mars into a crisp. Even King Jaren had told Mars off a few times, and told him to pay attention to his own fiancée or to return to his own country.
As for Princess Astra, she grew even more annoying than before, if that were possible, weeping and wailing and cursing Mana all day long.
To be honest, if Crown Prince Mars had made half as much effort as he poured into chasing Mana, to pacifying Astra instead, the older Princess of the Emerald Kingdom would probably be on cloud nine by now.
Mana, however, could only be disgusted to the point of wanting to retch every time she saw Mars's face. In fact, on Day 6, she had actually thrown up on Mars's shoes (rather deliberately).
"Papa, get this nuisance out of the country," Jules said, his handsome face darkened with fury and his beautiful mismatched eyes blazing with anger. "He's hounding Mana to the point that she's getting sick!"
King Jaren sighed and rubbed his temples. "Heaven knows that I want to kick his ass back to his own kingdom," he murmured.
"Kick the asshole's ass!" Azar said cheerfully. "Go, Grandpapa!"
Mana and Raven facepalmed simultaneously. Azar still couldn't construct full sentences properly, but he had to hear a curse word just once to be able to use it like an expert! Mana mentally complained that she was too young to be suffering the woes of parenthood already, but then, looking at Azar's adorable little face, she couldn't bear to say anything.
"Don't use bad words, Azar," she scolded half-heartedly.
Azar pouted. "Bad asshole guy bugs Mommy!" he said. "Bad asshole guy deserves bad word!"
Everyone else laughed and Mana couldn't help thinking that Azar would make an amazing lawyer, even better than her.
"But we really do need to do something about this pest," Bella murmured. "Why is he so desperate to marry Mana?"
"Who knows what that ass…lunatic thinks," Mana grumbled, changing the 'bad word' at the last moment.
Unfortunately for her, Azar's innate talent to pick up curse words was even faster than her withdrawal.
"Ass-lunatic bad guy!" Azar said immediately.
Mana groaned and Raven, who had been standing silently by her side until now, pulled her into a hug and rubbed her back in soothing circles.
"Since we can't get rid of him with straightforward means, should I try something more…subtle?" he asked softly. "And make it look like a natural illness…?"
"Please," King Jaren said. "By all means, Raven. If you can get rid of him or make him stick with Astra alone – I'll give you the summer palace at Verdant Hills!"
Raven chuckled and shook his head, although he was quite tempted by the offer. After all, the summer palace held immense sentimental value for him…
"I don't need any incentive to protect Mana, Papa," he said.
King Jaren laughed. "I know that, son. I was planning to give the summer palace to both of you anyway, and IMARI to Jules and Bella. It is always nice to have the place where you have good memories with your significant other," he said.
Jules and Bella were stunned, and then Bella squealed in delight and hugged King Jaren. "Thank you, Papa!"
Jules smiled and shook his head fondly, long used to the fact that he would be competing with IMARI for his fiancée's affections!
King Jaren laughed again and patted Bella's hair. "I'm very glad Jules managed to win you over, dear girl," he remarked. "Dora would have adored you."
Bella's eyes sparkled – this was probably the ultimate compliment for her!
"Hey, little Mana, are you in here?" came the most irritating voice in the world for the family in the room and the door was flung open. Crown Prince Mars appeared, and the supposed to be grounded Princess Astra trailed behind him, glaring daggers at Mana.
Raven pulled Mana protectively behind his back, and Jules and Bella moved quickly to block the incoming Mars.
"You should pay attention to your own fiancée, Crown Prince Mars," Bella said coldly. "Or would you like to be stuck to Princess Astra's door again? Perhaps we should stick on her wall this time."
Astra didn't look like she would mind it at all. In fact, her eyes shone hopefully when Bella said this.
"Please do, Big Sister Bella," Raven said politely, nodding at Bella.
Crown Prince Mars seemed to possess thicker skin than a sperm whale, unfortunately. He completely ignored Bella's warning and waved cheerfully at Mana.
"Ass-lunatic!" Azar shouted. "Don't bother my Mommy!" A bluish flame started glowing around the little dragon.
"I'm afraid we won't be able to save you if our little Azar gets truly angry, Mars," King Jaren said, seemingly helpfully, but actually hoping Azar would at least burn all the hair off this annoying brat. He looked at Astra and didn't remark on her transgression in stepping out of her courtyard. "Astra, take your fiancé back to your rooms. Both of you must have a lot to discuss and plan about your upcoming engagement," he told her.
Astra nodded obediently and tugged at Mars's hand, but the latter refused to budge.
Mars looked up at King Jaren. "I'd like to formally offer to marry Mana as my primary concubine," he said seriously.
"Rejected," King Jaren said without missing a beat.
"Do you want me to make Astra my concubine and Mana my wife instead?" Mars asked.
Astra let out a pitiful cry.
"Not in the least," King Jaren said coldly. "You are able to stand here and speak merely because my daughter Astra is in love with you. If you mistreat her, then the Emerald Kingdom will have absolutely nothing to do with the Amber Kingdom in the future."
"Neither will the Sapphire Kingdom," Bella said promptly.
"Nor the Obsidian Kingdom," Raven said. "Or the Pearl Kingdom."
Mars was taken aback. He sneered at Raven. "You think you can control the Pearl Kingdom as well?" he mocked. "Those Moon Temple guys will kill you before you leave their kingdom – I'm simply trying to save Mana from becoming a widow at such a young age."
A sparkling green vine lined with thorns of amber and silver, entirely composed of solidified magical energy, emanated from Mana and wrapped around Mars's throat, lifting him up in the air. "Don't assume that we can't harm you just because we've been tolerating you for Big Sister Astra's sake," Mana hissed. "If you so much as look at my Raven the wrong way in the future, I'll make sure that Astra becomes a widow instead."
King Jaren, too, was enraged. A green haze pooled around him. "And regardless of whether Astra chooses to marry you or not in the end, you will never have Mana's hand. Mana is, and will remain, engaged to Prince Raven of the Obsidian Kingdom until both of them are old enough to get married."
"Damn right," Jules murmured.
"Damn asshole ass-lunatic!" Azar said.
Mars was choking quite badly by now and his face was starting to turn blue. He tried to use his own fire magic to burn through Mana's magic, but Raven immediately placed a hand on Mana's shoulder and a rainbow strand wrapped around the sparkling green vine, strengthening it.
"Throw him into Astra's porch," Jules suggested.
Mana and Raven nodded and lifted their arms together.
Mars was flung away, flying out of the window and ultimately crashing into Astra's veranda. Astra ran after her fiancé.
"Do something," Mana whispered to Raven. "I'm afraid I might kill him next time."
Raven hugged her.. "I will, I promise," he said quietly.
