The magic reverberatory furnace is unveiled

”In the end, this is just a piece of magic construction heavy machinery. It’s called a magic crane truck. I brought this magic reverberatory furnace here by driving it.” (Wirk)
”Magic crai-… I’ve never heard of such a thing. It never came up in talks about magic architects.” (Jay)

True, since I’m the one who perfected magic heavy machinery. The base was my master’s technique, and of course I was only able to perfect these heavy machines because the founder had established and developed his skills as a magic architect.

”To start, I want to get the magic reverberatory furnace fired up, but is here ok? Inside the workshop is indeed going to be difficult.” (Wirk)

The crane won’t fit in. I also think it’ll be hard to get the magic reverberatory furnace in.

”… it’s fine to drop it wherever works.” (Jay)
”Is that so. That saves me the trouble.” (Wirk)

We set up the magic reverberatory furnace in a suitable open spot. Jay was looking over as though he was appraising it.

 ”Hmm. A reverberatory furnace.” (Jay)

It apparently seems that Jay knew about this furnace. But the magic part is missing. It’s just that the difference in ability between a reverberatory furnace and a magic reverberatory furnace is completely apart.

 ”Papa knows about it?” (Eph)

However, Eph didn’t mind the minor details like me, and reacted to the mention of a reverberatory furnace.

”Naturally. Don’t look down on us dwarves.” (Jay)
”Then why don’t you use that one?” (Wirk)
”Hah! We can make something better with that magma-using furnace!” (Jay)

The dwarves behind him declared so grandly, but hearing that makes me tilt my head in doubt. Even if it wasn’t a magic reverberatory furnace, even a reverberatory furnace would be better.

 ”Don’t you agree?”
”That’s, well… like I said before, you can only make half-baked things with that, can’t you?” (Wirk)
”What’d you say! What reason does this b*****d have for saying this!”
 ”Yeah, yeah!”
”You only brought a thing with a pompous-looking appearance, didn’t you!”

The other dwarves are louder than Jay today.

 ”Mogu~…”
 ”Mogu-!”
 ”Mogyu~”
 ”Mogu mogu…”
 ”Mo~gu~!”

The moles look fed up with all the other dwarves’ jeers flying about. Marbo and Iseki are swinging their arms like they’re retorting “What, huh!”.

”I don’t understand why you’re so obsessed with that thing. Sure it looks hot, but that magma’s heat is way too weak to work with.” (Wirk)

I told the dwarves my thoughts. Then, other than Jay, the dwarves looked at each other before bursting out in laughter.

”Oi, oi, did he just say the magma isn’t hot enough?”
”Does he have air collecting in that head of his?”
”Oi, oi, does that bright red, boiling lava look nice and cool to you humans?”

No, I didn’t say it wasn’t hot. I think you misunderstood that part. I’m worried about Jay who hasn’t said anything, but I’ll give a brief explanation.

”I don’t know what’s confusing you, but I said there wasn’t enough heat. The temperature of that lava is somewhere between 1600 and 1624 degrees.” (Wirk)

When I said as much, the other dwarves looked at one another. On the other hand, Jay’s look was sharp.

”On the other hand, the melting point of iron is 1538 degrees. That magma is certainly special and hotter than ordinary lava, but it’s still too weak to melt iron. If you use a reverberatory furnace, the temperature rises above 2000 degrees. If you want to get better at making weapons and armour, then you’d need at least that much heat.” (Wirk)

It takes too long for iron to melt with heat at the level of magma’s. If it takes too long to melt, the bond with the mana will deteriorate and the purity will be affected. As a result, half-baked goods like those end up mass-produced.
But then, the fact that they can make a half-baked but adequate goods despite wrongly using magma like that, is largely thanks to the dwarves’ techniques.

”— I see. I understand what you’re saying. In other words, the furnace which we’ve been obsessed with uses magma, but it’s useless because the heat isn’t enough. But the reverberatory furnace you brought is more practical and better than our furnace that uses magma, is that what you’re saying?” (Jay)
 ”Simply put, yes.” (Wirk)

I answered so, but Jay’s way of talking looked weird to me, which bothered me. Besides, if you knew about reverberatory furnaces, then why use that magma one?
Did he really think that magma was more practical, that is, that its temperature was high?

”Boss! This guy’s just speaking without thinking! He can’t know the magma’s temperature just by looking!”
”Wait! Are you saying that what Wirk said is unbelievable?” (Eph)
”Right-ja. That isn’t something that can be ignored.” (Bamboo Princess)

Eph and the Bamboo Princess replied so with a pout. I’m simply glad they trust me so.

”I’m a human that’s also involved in making things. I can usually tell the degree of heat of something just by looking at it.” (Wirk)
”Don’t lie, there’s no way the magma’s temperature can be so low!”
”Boss chose magma! He even went out of his way to use magma for daily chores!”

The dwarves are shouting. However, the way they’re saying it is bothering me. I get the feeling the dwarves are blindly following whatever Jay decides.
I get the feeling that some among them are in a hurry. Maybe some of them have noticed.

”What this guy says isn’t a lie. It’s true that the magma is special and hotter than normal, but it’s still no match for a furnace. That’s a fact.” (Jay)

And then what surprised me was that Jay readily acknowledged the problem.

”However. I still don’t trust magic architects. They only look at techniques and don’t understand the true nature of things. To me, it’s even more ridiculous that you’re so proud of that ordinary reverberatory furnace you brought!” (Jay)

However, sure enough, he didn’t just stop at obediently admitting it. I didn’t think he’d instead retort like that.
It’s just, if there’s one thing I can say, is that this isn’t just some ordinary reverberatory furnace, you know…

[TL: At this point, I’m convinced Jay is just playing along…]
