Chapter 22: Chapter 22: The Zy Family

A month after their escapade at the basement, Lawrence was called in by his father after he arrived home. Overlooking the entire city of Manila, a sight where you can see magnificent sparkling skyscrapers and waste-filled rivers and shorelines all on the same window, was Horace Zy, who wanted to spend time with his sons.

"Lawrence... I hear you've been spending time in the slums of Tondo, Manila. Have you become a rat yourself, little brother? Hahaha!" It was the 3rd son of the Zy dynasty, Xavier Zy, heir to ZM Holdings, a massive real estate business of the family. He currently is a junior university student at the age of 15. Similar to Lawrence, he is quite fat, with hair longer than Lawrence.

"Why are you so mean, Xaxa? You know Lawlaw is our soft little boy." Hugging Lawrence was the 2nd son of the Zy dynasty, Caesar Zy, heir to BCO Savings, the largest banking company in the country.  He graduated summa cum laude at RSAP and is the current secretary of BCO Savings at 24. He looks quite flamboyant. "Isn't that right?" 

"Get off of me!"

"It's understandable to mingle with the commoners, but what you're doing is unsanitary and illogical, Lawrence." Standing beside his father is the oldest son and heir to the ZM conglomerate was Felix Zy, CEO of ZM Malls. Being in his 30's, his figure is much like his father's, tall and handsome, and is a source of envy for his younger brothers. "We use statistical methods like surveys to gauge the general consensus among the lower classes. It is safer this way."

Horace nods in agreement, "Bwahahaha! Excellent! You truly deserve to be my heir, Felix. You, on the other hand..." He turns around and faces his 4th son. "What are you doing spending your free time in that rotten, God-ridden place..."

Lawrence defiantly stands in front of his father and exclaims, "It's not that bad! Sure, the place stinks and is dirty, but the people are nice!" 

"The Gates of Hell. That is what Dan Brown's Inferno and the rest of the world sees us because of those rats. Those people might be nice to you on the surface, but they are criminals. Druggies, addicts, and lazy scum of the country."

"They are not! Lemma's parents are hard-working people! She told me herself!"

"And what do they do? Collect bottles? Being housewives? Doing low-rate janitor jobs? There are thousands of free education out there, some even funded by our family. You're telling me these people can't educate themselves?"

Felix joins the conversation. "To add to that, father, did you know that despite being 4% of the population, they commit 60% of the crimes in this city?"

"Sorry, little bro, but Daddy's right. You were too young back then when Mommy died..." said Caesar while slumped on one of the couches.

"Mother? What does she have to do with any of this?" said Lawrence in confusion, not knowing anything about his mother.

"You were just born back then." Horace opens a safe found behind the desk with his titular title "CEO of ZM Conglomerate" and got a newspaper, neatly-folded with care. He gave it to Lawrence and what he read shocked him and his older brother Xavier.

"Lazy people are easily brainwashed by these communists. I know it because I used to live there too." All of his sons were surprised, as their father doesn't really reveal anything about his past. "I lifted myself out of poverty, unlike my parents who were lazy rats who moved from the countryside with nothing to bring to this city. I educated myself and built my empire from my blood and sweat!" Horace looked outside and stared down at the slums. "Hmm... Maybe that girl, Lemma, is the same as me, Lawrence. Just don't let her beat you on the top of the class! Bwahahaha!"

Felix fixes his glasses and asks Horace, "By the way, father, why did you call us here anyways? Is it about some problem on our properties? Or that new tax law the government has passed?"

"Bwahahaha! What are you talking about!" He gave each of them the newest Ephone model, "Use that on our surprise vacation to Hokkaido, Japan tomorrow! Time to relax!"

"Yipee! I love Japan! I can't wait to splurge on Jingisukan BBQ!" said Xaiver.

"This is too inefficient for our business sales..." Felix thought to himself.

Caesar pokes Lawrence's grumpy face and asks him, "Why the sad face? Gonna miss your crush?"

"She's not my crush! And why Japan... we've been there like 50 times!"

Caesar whispers to Lawrence, "Didn't you hear? The newest robots will be shown in Hokkaido," making his eyes immediately light up.

"I can't wait to dress you up like a shrine maiden this time!" 

"Noooooooooooo!"
