Chapter 16: The Grass in Desert

In the next week, almost 16 movies were released. However, these were all no-names and hardly made any splash at the box office. Some were not even able to attract any audience on their premiere night.

Movies like - Black Robe, Dogfight, Paradise, The Rapture, Shout, Whore etc. were released one after another. Sunny watched these movies personally and checked their marketing but thankfully all were C-grade or D-grade movies.

His 'Monster' went on to reap - 1.63 M, 1.16 M, 800K, 700K, 800K, 600K, 650K, 1.35 M, 1.20M, 900K (from Friday 4 to Friday 11), in total 9.43 Million Dollars.

This was a huge surprise not only for Sunny but also for dying RKO pictures. They hardly did enough marketing or promotion for this movie but seeing the deserted movie theatres and poor launches in the next week, they decided to go all out.

Bus stands, taxi stands, newspaper stands, billboards, radios and even some local news channels were contacted and signed for promotion. Soon, the hottest movie from Coppola was advertised and there were dazzling numbers thrown out to attract the viewers.

Especially the key data is that the movie was shot on a budget of less than 600K and already won 10 Million at the box office. ( A little exaggerated but that is marketing.)

These bombarding of ads and the deserted movie releases this week again pushed Vision Pictures' Monster on top of box office champion for two weeks and then to three weeks.

From Friday 4 to Friday 25, not a single big budget movie or a movie with a hot star was released. Even the Halloween file was almost empty with low-budget horror movies like Dolly Dearest and Scary Movie.

Even the audience that 'just wanted to watch something different' went inside with enthusiasm could not tolerate the nonsense shown on screen.

"Which director made this movie?"

"What kind of ugly doll can kill people? How can it fight with hands and legs? Is it a ghost or WWE superstar?"

Many scolding could be heard from people walking out of theatres and many simply wanted a refund.

This created a unique circle of profit for RKO and Vision pictures. Theatre chains had no other option than to provide more screens for this movie as this was the only movie that was selling well.  By Friday 25, the low-budget B-grade Sci-Fi horror movie made almost 23 Million dollars on the big screen.

This was truly a box office miracle that cannot be repeated until someone encounters such a deserted Halloween window again. After the end of the fourth week, the cinema chains started gradually removing the 'Monster' as most of the market had already been consumed.

RKO senior management decided to hold a party on 1st November to celebrate the great success of the movie.

The party was held at RKO studio and the whole team of 'Monster' was invited. The whole team mainly referees to Lead actors - Keanu and Tea who have gathered some popularity and Sofia Coppola who managed to find her salvation and the new producer/screenwriter on the block - Sunny Rover.

This way, Sunny managed to find some contacts and enjoy his first party in LA. Meanwhile, the success of this movie also attracted many mini-major studios because the profit ratio was truly amazing.

A movie worth less than 1 Million in total with all marketing and promotion is earning more than 23 Million in the US and Canada box office alone. Plus with global box office, almost 10 Million will definitely be added. Plus there is still time before the film is officially released from theatres.

Then you must add VHS tape sales and other peripheral income which will be no less than 10 Million in itself. Even though this is a long-time income, it still is a huge amount and independent from RKO pictures as per the news.

In summary, someone used 1 Million to earn more than 50 Million in total with a single movie. This was bound to attract many reporters and mini-major studios. A single grass in the desert can become so beautiful, few people in Hollywood could digest this fact.

Thankfully Chuck Norris's movie The Hitman was released on October 25, 1991, giving the audience a breather from horror movies and providing some relief. Also, Paul McCartney's Get Back (1991) and the comedy horror movie, Frankenstein: The College Years managed to attract the crowd back away from Monster.

Sunny had already stopped thinking about this movie and was waiting for the payment from the studio. In any possible scenario, the box office collection after deducting the distribution amount will soon arrive as the film is being pulled down.

Next week, VHS tapes will also be on market and the money from the global market will also be credited to the account.

Sunny already asked Merrill Lynch to help in clearing these accounts and make sure RKO pictures don't swallow up his profits.
