Chapter 20: Reservoir Dogs

If Toronto Film Festival was more of a business and collaboration promotional event, then Sundance is mainly focused on garnering awards and attention. Sundance began on January 19 and Sunny with a team of 10 executives came with big pomp and show.

After the team got settled in the hotel, everyone walked out and started searching for their prey. The competition is fierce in the distribution market and finding a real gem covered in all the shiny shards of glass is not easy.

If they are not careful, they might end up cutting themselves.

Sunny walked out alone. Being only 19 years old this year, allows him to mix in with the crowd easily and he is not famous enough to be recognised by people on the streets of Utah.

"Let's see which movies are scheduled for today," finding the film schedules from the notice boards, Sunny walked towards the nearby theatre.

In this theatre, he found a re-release of 2001: A Space Odyssey. This is one of the famous movies made by the legendary Stanley Kubrick. He watched the movie in a calm mood and enjoyed the movie as a pure movie audience.

He had only heard about this movie in his last life but never got a chance to see it. Even when it was available on several streaming sites, he just ignored it because it was just too old. Now, in a different time and in a different life, he truly felt the amazing power of the movie by Stanley Kubrick.

"How the hell did that guy film those shots?" This was a common thought that would pop up multiple times in his head after watching some scenes.

"Wow, man! Can you believe he filmed this movie back in 1968? 1968! Shit. This is some really amazing camera work."

Sunny heard someone talking and he deeply agreed with that statement. However, while walking out of the theatre Sunny saw someone. Someone who will be a legend in future.

The Great Quentin Tarantino.

Sorry, let's repeat that. 'The Great Cult Movie Maker – Quentin Fucking Tarantino'.

Sunny was sure this was the guy. But how? Why here?

"Excuse me, hello?" Sunny stopped Quentin abruptly.

Quentin just came out watching the masterpiece made by Stanley Kubrick. Even though it was not his kind of movie, that didn't stop him from appreciating the hard work and quality of this movie.

"Yeah, buddy?" Quentin asked looking at the teenager. Quentin himself is around 28 this year so Sunny looked just a normal teenager to him.

"I have seen you somewhere. I can't remember it but I think we met before." Sunny tried to strike a conversation using the cheesy lines guys use to pick up girls.

However, Quentin was more attractive to Sunny at this moment than some girl.

"WOAH! Buddy… I am straight. Okay! I got nothing against you guys but let's keep it civil. Cool?" Quentin seriously misunderstood Sunny and a few people literally laughed at Sunny foolish expression.

"Wait… I mean it. Are you a filmmaker or a director…? I can't remember correctly but we did had a chat?" Sunny still persisted.

No way, he cannot let the future golden star just walk away. If he let Quentin Tarantino escape from his hands, he would smash his head on the floor right now.

"Seriously, did we? I don't remember man. I met so many people these days. Sorry for that." Quentin quickly apologised for his gaffe.

"No issue. C'mon, let's grab something to eat. My treat. Tell me, are you here to promote your film or just came as a fan?" Sunny finally got a chance to continue the conversation and he continued chatting with Quentin.

After twenty minutes of polite and friendly conversation, Sunny found that Quentin is here to showcase his first movie, Reservoir Dogs and is currently looking for distributors.

"It will be released on theatre no. 17, correct? I will definitely watch it. Also, I have my own studio with distribution channels across USA and Canada.

Quentin felt this boy was shady and some scam artist, but he didn't speak and took his card. Then finishing the conversation in hurry, he walked away and decided to call his agent first.

"Hey, Robert? Yeah, can you hurry up and find me some information about this Rover Pictures?"

"Sure, No hurry. Yes, when are you coming here?" Quentin asked again and then confirmed timings with his agent before cutting the call.

Quentin signed with The William Morris Agency (WMA) before he started filming his first movie and even though he is not a big name yet, WMA focus more on directors rather than actors.

Hence, just after half an hour, Quentin got all the information about Rover Pictures.

"Nice! One movie and he turned from a screenwriter to a big man! Fucking awesome!" Quentin was seriously surprised by this guy, and he decided to keep his card and save his number. He still wants to wait and see how his film performs at the festival.

Then he will check the conditions offered to him. He also wants to have a big break in Hollywood and the conditions offered by this, Sunny Rover, can tempt even the devil.

Sunny, on the other hand, called his executives and ordered them to find out everything they can about Quentin Tarantino. He wants to make sure in this life, Quentin is tied with his company rather than those fat brothers and their studio Miramax.

Quentin is definitely someone who can change the fate of his company.

Treating himself to a big cheeseburger and coke, Sunny foolishly laughed from time to time. The joy of meeting Quentin cannot be described in a few words.

However, this was only the beginning of his encounters with future stars.

He met James Spader who was also quite young and walking with some girl he didn't recognise personally.

Then saw John Turturro, the weird famous comedian from Adam Sandler's movies and he was with two other men, and it seemed they were talking about something.

He tried to try to listen to their conversation and with his burger and coke, sat on a bench near him.

"I am telling you guys; the film Swoon is seriously mind-blowing. Okay. It has that grit, that tension and even though it is different from what I expected, it is really good." (John)

"Yeah, I heard about it. Seems interesting. What else you got on the list?" (A tall guy with long hair asked)

"I have a long list man. Let's go to this theatre number 7. They have this movie, Delicatessen. A French movie but with English subtitles. I heard it's dark and funny." (Short guy with a simple hairstyle)

"Cool, let's go. I don't want to waste our little free time sitting outside." (John)

Sunny listened to their conversation while he finished his burger and coke. Then he watched as the trio went on their way. He still had no idea who those two other people were and he basically has no reason or excuse to jump into their group.

However, he kept their look in his mind and decided to search about them in future. Any guy who can be treated with respect by an actor in a film festival is definitely part of the industry and maybe these guys will be some big guys in future.
