Chapter 46: Species

Coming back to his office from the short but mentally tiring visit to Stanford, Sunny was pleasantly surprised to find a list of possible potential candidates for Rover Net. This list was faxed from Tim.

Sunny handed over the list to Harris and instructed him to contact these scientists and invite them for Rover Net. The salary was not even in consideration as long as they were willing to join Rover Net.

Sunny was ready to bleed for these great gods. They are not students or professors from Stanford but the people who are at the highest peak in their field of research.

Sunny knew these people won't agree from one phone call or one meeting and it will be a long process Just like Bruckheimer who took almost six months to agree to a partnership.

The month of January saw some biggies joining Sunny's companies and Sunny was unknowingly expanding at a more rapid rate than he ever planned. Thankfully, his finances were stable and solid and there was no cash crunch at the moment.

Sunny in his free time got busy writing the script outline for the two horror movies - The Ring and Annabelle. Sunny hardly remembered any dialogue from the original movies and decided to leave the screenplay department to add some good dialogues that can be relevant in the present times.

For Sunny, these two low-budget movies were extremely important. They were meant to capture the market in the Halloween season when the big six don't generally release any big production. Hence the fight is quite less, and the major competitors are sequels from some ongoing series.

Hence, Sunny devoted himself to writing the two storylines for the movies. However, while Sunny was developing his storyline, there were many people who were getting restless and decided to meet him.

One of these guys was the writer, Dennis Feldman. He wrote the script for the movie - The Message which Sunny had approved a few days back and after getting the approval from a studio, Dennis wanted to sit and discuss the points he needed to change in the script.

However, Sunny's schedule had been full, and Harris arranged a meeting today.

"Sir, Mr Dennis Feldman is waiting outside for the meeting on the script," Harris called and informed Sunny.

"Sure, just wait 5 minutes," Sunny replied before collecting the pages he had written and fixing his desk.

Dennis Feldman came up with a new version of the script he wrote after trying to fix the plot holes for Sunny to approve or simply provide his input.

"Hello, Mr Dennis. Well, let's see. How about the script?" Sunny welcomed Dennis and after a quick greeting, he got straight to business.

"Ah! Sure. Here," Dennis handed him the revised script.

Sunny checked the script and still found there were still some areas that needed adjusting but while he was writing his notes, he remembered where he had seen this movie. This movie is a famous alien movie - Species and it was famous for the nude scenes from a model who was the lead actress in the movie.

It was not the alien concept or the horror that is present in - 'Alien' series or the depth of the future movie of 'Under the Skin' movie. This was somewhere in between, and it failed to leave a big mark.

Sunny stopped writing notes and got lost in thoughts.

"How to fix this? How to improve the idea and make it better?" This thought simply hooked him and he was unable to think clearly about the script anymore.

"Dennis, I know what you are trying to do here. I get this. But you do realize that this script lacks the horror or science elements of an alien movie or some intellectual depth to bind the audience.

How about you check out previous movies on the subject and take some inspiration while I would also think in parallel and meet after a week? I think we can agree to a final script outline by then."

Sunny finally responded to Dennis who was getting visibly agitated. Dennis let out a big breath feeling relaxed after getting the feedback. He was worried that Sunny might reject the script and the studio might cancel the movie.

"No issues. I can agree to that," Dennis with new hope agreed to the next meeting and left the office while Sunny found himself in a difficult position. How to change a movie you know could have been better and move it from a B rank to an A rank when you had already seen it?

This is improving a movie that was released and was popular but didn't leave any opportunity for future sequels or made big money on the screen. This was hard. Being a critic is easy but then taking on a script and improving it when you have no idea if it will be successful or not, is really difficult, especially when you have placed big bets on it.

Sunny tried to recall all the plots of alien movies he had seen and TV series in the same genre and tried to think of something that can be incorporated into this one.

Sunny went back to the script and first modified the opening parts to give it a more in-depth background. The scientists bring samples of life from a recent NASA mission that is in DNA form and in secret, mix these with a few pregnant women so that they can produce an alien Hybrid.

This gives a better origin story for the lead character and Sunny then cut down on a few nude scenes and added notes to highlight horror and suspense. To make sure the film does not look like a blatant rip-off from the 'Alien' series, Sunny shifted the narrative of the movie towards more the humanistic side of the Alien Girl than the violence and horror.

So, the alien girl grows up and becomes a kind of alien-human hybrid and the military and scientists put her in isolation and experiment on it. She becomes a slave, a subject of experimentation and finally, one researcher helps her escape.

Then the movie goes forward in the military vs the alien part and the alien girl escaping with the human scientist.

Sunny heavily borrowed the idea from a very famous movie - 'The Shape of Water'.

That movie also deals with a monster or alien species, but it is quite different in the way it handles the narrative. Sunny felt this script outline was much better than the original 'Species' which actually lacked human connection and depth.

Also, The Shape of Water was a masterpiece movie, and it was financially successful and even the critics loved that. So, he got busy fixing or re-writing the parts he felt needed more change.

In this way, after a week when both Sunny and Dennis met again, Dennis found himself agreeing with many of the key points Sunny raised. Dennis felt he was lucky to meet such a young studio owner who himself was involved in the movie industry and not taking it as a pure business.

Sunny wanted to find Del Toro to shoot the movie initially but considering the time factor, he stopped himself. Dennis recommended his friend and the initial supporter of this project, Roger Donaldson.

Sunny left the final call to Kenneth who was more in touch with these directors, and he basically held the final casting rights in his hands. He wanted an actress with a hot body but with equally impressive acting talent. A model like the original cast was not going to cut it.
