Chapter 51: Advertising and Partying

Sunny after hiring Bob was waiting for a group of engineers he had poached from Adobe at a high price. The headhunter company spent a lot of money to convince these coders from adobe to come to silicon valley and join Rover Net.

"Hello everyone. I am Sunny. Chairman and CTO of Rover Net. I bought all of you here not to develop another Photoshop or graphic software but to create the first digital advertising platform in the world.

For now, if you want to create a simple poster, you need to find a graphic artist or a company and then provide them with pictures and content. Then if you want to advertise that poster, you need to find an advertising company and PR company to make that happen.

This is a long process and often time taking and money-burning. What I want is to simplify that process. Let us create a simple platform. This platform will be divided into three parts and your role is in the first section and which is creating templates.

These templates will be designed to provide a set of standards for internet advertising. Ad sizes, font and colours must be fixed. I don't need a whole bunch of Photoshop tools but what I want is a clean canvas with different template sizes, font options and an interface that makes it so easy that a college student can design these posters.

Rest, I have designed my personal vision of this platform and its UI and created a detailed ideation theme but I hope, you guys can turn this into reality and make this platform possible.

Trust me, this will change the way people advertise. And you shall be named as the pioneer of internet advertising."

Sunny sold his big dream of an internet advertising platform to these designers and coders and gave them a goal to work on. Besides, who doesn't want to be called a Pioneer in his field?

This group of 12 coders who basically moved from Adobe and paralysed it for time being put their heart and soul into Sunny's new platform. Sunny basically wanted to create 'CANVA' but he knew traditional coders will never be able to create this and coders who had worked on something like Photoshop, were far ahead.

While this group of coders were working on Canva, another group of coders who were hired from Ivy league colleges including Stanford and Harvard were working on the second part of this platform.

They were basically creating a set of algorithms to deploy and detect the ads that will be launched from this platform on different websites. Data collection and Data deployment were for traditional coders and Sunny wanted them to develop this part of the platform to make sure, in future, he controls the lifeline of the internet.

Imagine, all the browsers and portals were simply losing money until Google came up with Google AdWords and opened the way for advertising. Before that, internet companies were simply burning cash and most of them disappeared after the dotcom bubble.

Sunny was ready to make sure his companies under Rover Net survive this fiasco.

March was mostly silent for Sunny and his companies except for the announcements for the Oscars. This year was the 65th Academy Awards and Rover Pictures was fighting for the lead Actress trophy.

Rover Pictures had done a wide range of activities, from parties to gifts and it was time for it to bring one golden statue home.

Sunny also received an invitation considering Rover Pictures' movie - Blue Sky was nominated in more than 5 different categories. From the female lead, art direction, cinematography, sound, and film editing. The five categories were some heavy awards and far more than what Sunny had planned.

This was all thanks to the magical and hard work behind the scenes and the plan created by Sunny for this oscar. The PR and publicity team threw parties on villas, parties on beaches and sent gifts from luxury watches to tickets for their favourite baseball games.

Everything was tailored and their operation was far ahead of what any other PR agency was doing. It was so blatant and so powerful that even Harvey Weinstein publically threw a fit at one of these parties.

Thankfully, just before the nominations were announced, Sunny cancelled all the promotional activities and made sure not to disgust the Academy.

Halle Berry was hardly qualified to attend the oscar ceremony but she flew directly to silicon valley and jumped on Sunny to make sure he didn't ditch her for something so important.

Sunny under the influence of leather-dressed Catwoman, gave up and agreed to Halle's demands. Flying back to LA, Sunny had to hire stylists and a team of make-up artists for Halle. Sunny himself wanted to use oscar to create momentum for his next movie and he called Kenny for this matter.

"Kenneth, how can we create the buzz for Need for Speed by using Oscars? Any good ideas?"

Hearing Sunny on the other end of the call, Kenneth thought Sunny had gone mad.

"Sunny, that's Academy! You don't use the academy to promote yourself. If we mess up, we will be targeted by the whole of Hollywood in future. Big Time!" Kenneth tried to make Sunny understand the rules of the game but Sunny was fixed on the matter.

Ignoring Kenneth and his pleas, Sunny called both the Garys and then called Kenneth back.

"How about the after-party?" Sunny asked thinking about the future Vanity Fair parties that were enough to leave gossip for months after the Oscars.

"Irving Lazar is not dead. He might look like it but he is not. And no one can offend him when he has one leg in the casket." Kenneth roared from the other end.

Kenneth knew as long as literary-and-talent agent Lazar was alive, no one will miss his parties. It was not because his parties were special but it is because they have become a brand and a meeting place for the power-hungry Hollywood stars and directors.

Sunny had no choice but to drop the idea of promoting Need for Speed or any other movie this year but the idea of hosting an Oscar after-party took hold inside his head.

"How old is this Lazar?" Sunny asked after sorting his thoughts.

"Maybe 90. I don't know but he is old." Kenney replied.

"Okay. Then make a budget and plans for the next year's Oscar Party. This year let the old man host his party, but from next year, after the Oscars, I want all the models, all the directors and editors and everyone who ever worked in Hollywood to come to our party.

No VIP section and no class division. I want to bring the youngest and hottest potential Hollywood stars and people behind the scene together." Sunny gave Kenneth a new headache to sort out.

Kenny agreed to this matter on the phone and then went back to his personal thinking board. Sorting out the pros and cons, he realised, Sunny might be on to something. Something big. Everyone knew Lazar throws exclusive invitations only after the Oscar party, but what after his death?

What about young actors and models? What about the new directors and musicians? Don't forget these people might not be in the media limelight but they are the ones who are basically running the movie business.

Kenneth, after a lot of smoking and drinking, finally wrote this matter for 1994 - after Oscar Party and called Sunny back late at night. Sunny was busy taming a wild cat and he picked up the phone in the middle of the taming session.

"What?"

"I agree. The idea is good and we can plan ahead. Once we are able to create a brand, we might be the only party people might want to come to after the Oscars." Kenney said.

"I know. Let's talk about this tomorrow. Good night." Sunny cut the call after listening to something he already knew in his heart.

"Fuck! How can you pick a call like this?" Halle meowed in an angry tone making Sunny feel a little angry and he pulled the collar chain a little back and then get back on the business.

"Not so hard! Shit!" Halle cried and Sunny laughed and the next Oscar Party plan was decided in this weird Hollywood culture.
