Winter Palace, St. Petersburg Russian Empire

December 7th, 1901

[Nicholas II POV]

I feel the weight of the world is pressing around me as the first ever DUMA failed to reach my confidence as he saw in the peasants eyes sullen and hatred looks. At the same time hardened by poverty and life.

I tried and failed to bring the Russians to prosperity. But Russia was plagued with too many problems even today as he tried to establish a second DUMA to which he hoped to succeed as he could feel the unrest that is brewing in the empire along with the current reforms that he refused to approve due to the treasury not handling the costs of it and taking loans as of now is out of the question.

Is this god giving me a trial…The Russian people seem hopeless in the face of adversity and hate the monarchy even more. And there's even news that this new ideology is on the rise as he knew he exiled Trotsky and Lenin but that goddamn manifesto still haunts me to this day and their ideals of a united people under a common cause and workers. Which sounds good on paper, but in reality it will end the monarchy as I know it.

I need to discuss with Sergei on the issues on getting more money to flow within the Russian empire. And fix the issues plaguing the Russian empire as soon as possible.

[3rd Person POV]

As he was thinking about it, Sergei knocked on the door and Nicholas answered rather tiredly to enter. Sergei opened the door and took a look around for a brief second before focusing on the tired Tsar who is not a perfect Tsar by any means like his father, but a struggling and honest one by Sergei's assessment.

Sergei then closed the door behind him and stood in front of the desk, facing Nicholas with a Neutral expression as Sergei spoke "Your Imperial Majesty, The Second DUMA will commence soon. Sergei informed Nicholas who frowned a bit as Nicholas rubbed his beard for a brief moment before looking at Sergei and said

"Tell me Sergei, how much can we spare for Agricultural reform and land reform?" Nicholas said, knowing the answer but wanting to hear Sergei's opinion on it.

Sergei was staring at Nicholas for a brief moment before sighing and said his thoughts. "No your imperial majesty. We are short this time around. I would also not recommend taking loans from the British and French you're imperial majesty.

"In other news, your imperial majesty, the Japanese are asking us to recognize their dominance over Korea in exchange they'll recognize ours in Manchuria."

Hearing this, Nicholas stopped for a moment to glance at Sergei with an angry expression and calmly said "preposterous, why would I even recognize their rule over the Korean peninsula as their ambition stretches over the Chinese mainland itself after they secure Korea itself."

Nicholas stood for a moment and turned around to look outside of his window to see his son playing with her mother and calmed down a bit as he glanced back at Sergei and decisively said "Delay the negotiations as much as possible. We cannot surrender Korea to the Japanese as they'll likely spread it to Manchuria to which even recognizing our dominance over Manchuria is mute. Since Manchuria is full of either Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans. Counter offer them with us offering a buffer zone between north and south Korea. If they don't accept it, try to compromise more and delay as much as possible."

"And order the 46th Army Division to be on full readiness in case the Japanese get rowdy. And also notify our navy to be prepared." Nicholas said as he sipped his coffee.

Sergei nodded obediently as he popped up another issue at hand "Your Imperial Majesty, there's another issue you must also tackle. It's about Kaiser Wilhelm II."

Nicholas sighed and said "My cousin, why did you have to be like this…what is the issue with the German empire Sergei?" He said professionally for a moment as Nicholas knew he would not shake just because Wilhelm II was related to him by blood.

"Kaiser Wilhelm II has ordered more conscription and recruitment inside the German empire to further increase their army size. Right now it is estimated that number has reached half a million, your imperial majesty." Sergei said with a big of confidence thanks to the spies inside the German Empire.

"Half a million you say?" Nicholas got into thinking as he calculated that they had around 700,000 right now and also calculated the risks to recruit more people into the Russian army. Nicholas spoke after being quiet for about 5 mins "Order the army to recruit 300,000 more and promise them food and decent salary. And yes I know Sergei that our coffers are taking a bit right now. But right now the aggression the Germans are showing is affecting us locally as the Russian people want to feel safe and powerful with our army protecting them." Nicholas said while scanning through the table and found the papers he was looking for and handed it to Sergei.

"Here, grab this. And approve it via DUMA. We also need to fund our Trans-Siberian Railway line to be completed as soon as possible. I want it done by 1903 at best."

Hearing such a demand, even Sergei was surprised and chose not to speak as Sergei just bowed and agreed "It will be done your imperial majesty…" as Sergei tightly clasped the papers in his hand but not tight enough to ruin it.

"That will be all Sergei, you may leave and prepare the orders I've given you." Nicholas said as he sat down and continued to write something for the DUMA.

Sergei nodded and dismissed himself and left the office. As Sergei closed the door, Nicholas was quite distraught and felt so alone and suffocated as he feared for his wife and children and their future as well. So he devised a plan as he wrote a secret order to the secret police and military guards, the ones he most trusted. That in case of anything that ever happens that might endanger the Romanov family line, and the future of Russia itself, theyw I'll accept the order to grab the children first and lastly him and his wife Alexandra to flee Russia in exile and in hiding as Nicholas knew he couldn't fulfill some of thee promises that the peasantry and the Russian people wanted to see.

Especially ever since the teachings of Marxism the situation is slowly becoming unstable as Nicholas knew he didn't have enough time left as he had to prepare everything for his family's quick escape should ever these events come to light.

After finishing writing his order, he folded it, and stamped it with a royal seal and stood up to head to the left side of the walled office and slid the sealed letter on the tight narrow gap that only a letter could fit and said these final words before focusing on the task of ruling the Russian empire with all his strength and wisdom. He knew he was not ready to rule Russia. But he has already embraced it and will continue to do so until he will die either from the hands of the revolution via execution, or in the arms of his happy family. "This is my final order to you in any situation that endangers my family. You must save my children first. Please, I beg you Alfred. Thank you…" and that he walked away and exited the office with a slight clunk of the door closing and all was silent.

On the slit, the letter was taken by a man named Alfred who was the head of the secret police under the Tsars strict control. Alfred read the letter and closed it after rechecking everything, even the seal. And safely folded the letter and hid it somewhere that will not be found ever. He didn't have the heart to burn it as he and his men and women prepared future escape routes for the Imperial family and secured a division at best to escort the family itself.

Time was of the essence for Alfred as this plan will take years to plan everything and execute properly. But Alfred knew, they have plenty of time left before all the dominoes in Russia will fall. And with the Romanov family with it.
