Story Start. Varinius’ first death –
At the age of 23, Varinius’ body was riddled with scars from everything from being whipped and cut, to a bullet wound from being shot. The chafing of his wrists and neck had long since removed all the skin and left ugly red marks. His life hadn’t been a pleasant one apart from the first eight years which he can barely remember. As he was reminiscing about the past, his dead eyes stared at the wooden boards of the ceiling, almost ignoring the moans coming from the woman on top of him and the clanking of the chains tying him to the headboard from his collar and cuffs.
After a few minutes, the woman let out a scream of ecstasy and fell limp across his chest. She didn’t stay long though, and soon walked out without a backward glance. A few ‘customers’ later, the aphrodisiac wore off and they once again has to dose him. He was far too popular among the executives to be allowed to slack. Though he had long since stopped responding to pain, so punishments were no longer given as they were ineffective. They just pumped him full of an aphrodisiac and, while he was no longer particularly affected by that either, it at least made him hard.
His thoughts once again clouded over, and he let himself be lost in the abyss which was his sanctuary. He had long since stopped struggling against reality. He had accepted that this was his lot in life. Used, abused and eventually, thrown away. He honestly hoped he was killed soon.
A new ‘customer’ walked in. He felt a short flash of rage bubble up from deep inside before it was consumed by the all-encompassing apathy of his mind. It was her. The one who had enslaved him. The one who had killed his father. The one who ordered the rape of his mother to teach him a lesson. She was getting older, but he would recognise that face anywhere. She was also the top executive of the camp now.
She smiled as she straddled him and whispered in his ear, “You look just like your father.” My hand twitched but there was no other response. “Tch. I was hoping to get you all worked up. It’s no fun riding an inexpressive stud, no matter how large his dick.” She examined his face for a second before sighing.
She then shut up and enjoyed him to her hearts content. He hated every moment as he watched her riding him, enjoying herself. He once again sank into an apathetic haze, like an observer, completely detached from the events occurring. After she was done, she caressed his cheek saying, “I’ll be back tomorrow.” She walked out.
Time passed. The only way to mark the passing of time were the twice-daily meals and once-daily session with the camp executive. He waited and waited, but she didn’t tire of him. He was honestly confused. Why didn’t she kill him already? Then, one day, she didn’t come. Neither did anyone deliver him food. He felt relief. He was finally allowed to die. An unknown amount of time later, with his tongue thick from dehydration and his thoughts clear of drugs, the door opened, letting in a man dressed in all black, like an assassin. He looked surprised at my presence, then seeing my situation, a flash of pity crossed his eyes. He walked over to the edge of the bed.
“Do you want be to free you?” the man asked.
He only shook his head and with his voice croaky from disuse and dehydration, whispered, “…kill me.”
The man didn’t look surprised. “Very well. May I know your name, so you aren’t forgotten?”
“…No.”
“Oh. May your fortune be better in your next life, young man.” With that, the man brought his knife down, plunging it into Varinius’ heart.
As his thought grew dim, he heard the man in black mutter something. He didn’t care or listen though as he could finally rest. What he didn’t know was that someone else did hear.
“My god, Tenebris. Please offer this poor soul passage to a better life…”
An echoing voice seemed to respond. ‘Just what I was looking for.’ Before everything went dark.
---
He was floating in the infinite void for an unknown amount of time. He was content. There was no pain. No anger. No grief. No people. The memories soon dulled and were slowly forgotten. Even thoughts eventually stopped. All was at peace.
Then there was a change. Darkness. A dark silhouette against the void where there was no light. “Wake up, child. I have a job for you.”
“...” He didn’t want anything to do with it so he pretended it didn’t exist.
The silhouette seemed surprised at his thoughts. Realising that he wasn’t asleep, but simple drifting without thought, and content with spending eternity doing the same. It sighed and returned the broken soul’s memories to it.
“Fucking hell!” He exploded with pain throughout his entire being, reliving his entire life in seconds. All that pain, all that misery, condensed and forcefully shoved into his mind. “Do you know how long it took to get rid of those?”

“Yes. But I have a job for you. A new life, but those memories are needed for you to do it.”
“And I don’t want your goddamn job!”
“It seems the return of your memories awakened your long dead emotions. Good.”
He struggled to regain control over his raging emotions, mostly rage but also grief, sorrow, and a whole fucking lot of pain.
“I will guarantee you a better life this time. I will give you abilities to assist in your task and once you have finished your task, you will be free.”
“No. I refuse to ever be a slave again. No matter what you do, you can’t make me do anything.”
“I’m not making you a slave, or even a servant. You don’t even need to join my church. Think of it as being my employee. Once you’ve completed the job, you can do whatever the fuck you want. I’ll even give you a wish afterward.”
“If you can guarantee me a good life and give me exceptional abilities and I might just do the job. I will be free from the moment my life starts.”
“Who do you think you are? You can’t just throw terms at a god!”
“I’m a soul with nothing to lose. Either agree to my terms or fucking eviscerate me ‘cause I don’t care either way.”
“…Fine. Your job is to combat the spread of the Church of Light. The bastard in charge of light and judgement, Lux, is trying to eliminate faith in me by spreading his religion, and in all but one continent, he succeeded, the fucker. I’m placing you on the Odarnat continent, where my church still has some sway. When you get old enough, travel to one of my Churches, got it?”
“Fine. What abilities do I get?”
“I can’t have you die or be weak so… Hmm, lets say [Regeneration] and [Limitless]. What else? You need to be able to adapt so [Fast Learner]… And I can’t have you being controlled by that bastard Lux, so [Mental Immunity]. And just because I’m that generous, I’ll even give you an [Inventory].”
“That’s… a lot. Thanks, I guess?”
“You’re welcome. Anything else you want clarification on before I kick you over?”
“Who are you? You told me to go to your church, but you didn’t say who you were.”
“Oh. I guess I assumed you already knew. I have followers in your old world. The only reason I got your soul was because one of my followers killed you and prayed for your soul over your corpse. I am Tenebris, the God of Darkness and Balance. Now, off with you! I’m placing you as a minor noble of the Adronicus Empire. You’ll be safe there until you reach majority.”
His consciousness began to flicker but before he was gone, a whisper of “You think I’ll let you?” brushed across the void as a radiant figure appeared out of nowhere.
“Lux, you asshole! Get out of my realm and stop interfering, you’re disturbing the Balance!
“My Judgement is that your miserable Balance is unnecessary. As such, it must be true. Now, I’ll break your pathetic mortal apostle. Then you’ll never have to chance to stop me! Hahahahaha!”
The silhouettes and voices faded away as a two forces roughly wrenched at him in a painful game of tug-of-war, pulling him through the veil between the void and the mortal plane and into the womb of a giant woman standing on an enormous snowy clifftop, overlooking the forests kilometres below. As his consciousness faded, his last thought was, ‘fucking deities.’
