A werewolf strode through the forest. Thin flexible armor creaked as she moved. She stretched, gray fur dusty from a night spent sleeping under a tree. Her pack was light, only the things she needed for today's job, some sleeping berries, a few bundles of rope, spikes on the end to anchor them. Slung across her shoulders was her weapon, a long, slender pole, the end hooked and broad like a scythe, but blunt. Many people thought she used it to bludgeon her enemies, they were completely wrong of course.
Her ears flicked as she entered a clearing, the center of which had been dug out by something. She felt a presence suddenly, then a rustling in the bushes to her left. Crouching down and edging closer, nose twitching as she picked up its scent. Her brows furrowed, fangs gritting as she plunged her hand into the bushes and pulled out a small goblin, flailing and yelping out.
She clamped a hand around her mouth and glanced towards the edge of the dirt pit, then looked down at the little creature in her arms, “Merryweather what have I told you about following me out on jobs. We’re almost three leagues away from the village!” she tore into her with a whisper, “Your mother's going to kill me when we get back!”
The little green child grimaced as she was scolded, “N-nuh uh Miss Uile. M-mama isn gonna be mad. I tol’er you were takin me out ta learn. She had bizniss anyways.” she pouted.
The wolf huffed, “This is completely different from me teaching you about numbers or letters. This is my job, and this one is dangerous. What if you got hurt? What if you got Eaten!”
The girl shook herself out of the wolf's grasp, “Nuh uh! Nothin can eat me, Ah’m to tough.” she said as she flexed her little green arms. “Buhsides. I learnt what you told me and was sooper quiet. Ya didn even notice me till now.” said as she beamed and looked up at the wolf.
Uile snorted and shook her head, “Well. You got me there kiddo. But nonetheless, I need you to stay Quiet, and stay out of Sight.” glancing towards the edge of the pit and seeing a plume of dust floating up from the center. “This monster may not be an easy one for me, and I don't want you getting hurt or worse. So stay here in the bushes. I’ll call out when I’m done.” standing up and pulling her hook from its straps.
She strode out, crouching low as she edged towards the pit. More dust rose into the air as whatever was inside began to move. She reached out with her hook, rapping it on the ground a few times. What answered was a deep rumble in the ground. She readied herself, taking a deep breath as the rumbling stopped.
The beast struck, bursting out from under the ground nearest the edge and flying towards her, fangs outstretched to grasp at her. She dived and rolled to the right, the monster's fangs only finding dirt and grass. Springing to her feet she grinned as she finally got a decent look at it.
A serpent, massively huge and rising up as it spat dirt from its maw. Its head was armored, dirt and stones embedded into it from burrowing through rock its whole life, scales shone bright purple in the daylight, armor along its spine and a great spike at the end of its tail. ‘A Jewel Serpent’, the wolf thought to herself, ‘Wonderful’.
Uile grinned wide as she sprinted forward, throwing a spike into the ground as she jumped, flinging herself over the snake. It turned to follow her, hissing loudly and sliding itself out of the pit. She landed on the other side and ran as fast as she could under it, dodging just at the last moment before it slammed its armored head down right where she had been.
She panted as she flung the other end of the rope far, anchoring it in a tree as wide as she was tall. The serpent whipped its head back and forth, straining the rope. Uile ran to the ground anchor and stamped down on it, driving it deeper into the rock while she grabbed the flailing rope and held tight. With her foot on the anchor she shouted out a word, magic arcing out across the rope and tightening it, more strands springing out winding around the serpent's body, tightening and binding the snake quickly down to the ground.
As the serpent laid there struggling, she flopped down onto her rump with a sigh. Merryweather jumped out of the bushes and ran forward, “Wow wow wow! Ms.Uile tha was so cool! Tha way you jumped! An threw those spiky things!” she exclaimed, pantomiming out what she had seen.
The wolf grinned and laughed, “Well I am the most successful monster relocator in the frontier kiddo.” ears flattening as she looked back at the serpent, staring into its jewel colored eye. “Only relocator so far as I know.”
She sighed and stood, dusting herself off, “Anyway, want a lesson Merry? We may as well since you told your mom you’d be, “learning”.” The little goblin nodded furiously, running to the bushes and pulling out her own pack, and from it a crude notebook and pencil. “Well look at that, tell you what, you take some notes for me and I’ll tell you about this critter.” Uile said, impressed by the kids' eagerness.
As she stepped closer to the snake she took a leap, hopping up onto its snout and working her hook into its upper jaw, lifting and opening its maw. “Fang size…. 2 and a half arm. Length…. I’m gonna say 40….ish of Me long. Now see its venom isn't poisonous, but it is acidic. It uses it to melt down rock and ore, then it eats up the slurry, the mush of it, and uses that to develop its armored scales.” she explained, grabbing the bag of sleep berries on her belt and throwing them into the serpents mouth, dislodging her hook and letting it snap its jaws shut around them. Soon the beast is asleep, a slow rumble coming from inside it as it breathes heavily.

She hops back down and beckons the girl closer, “okay, see these scales here?” she gestures with her hook, then uses it to peel up a long, claw-like scale the color of stone. “This kind of scale helps it move under the ground, it grips the side of the tunnel it's in and pushes it forward. Its belly scales are so strong you could try and stab it with a steel spear all you want and never hope to pierce it.”
She lifts her hook high and uses it to climb up and onto its back, peeling back a dense and heavy armored scale, “These here are used the same way, but they’re much thicker and pronounced, like a mix between the belly and side scales.” She slides back down and looks at the little goblin scribbling away on the pad.
“I’m glad we ran into this kind instead of a Jade Jewel, that's green in color,” she said clarifying as the girl looked up at her confused, “You see those are able to spit their venom, strip armor and flesh from bones in seconds. They live far away in the jungles east of here though, preying on adventurers and, well anything that comes into their territories. So we don’t have to worry about them.”
Merryweather looked back up from her pad and over to the sleeping serpent, “Buh then where’d this’n come from?”
“Ah, well, it was probably driven off from its home by mining efforts up north, where the war is. It's big and fearsome, yes, but any animal will run before having to confront something unless it is angered.” Uile explained, sliding a hand down the beast's side.
The child grimaced at the mention of the war, putting her pad and pencil down, shuffling a little before putting them away. “Where’ll ya take it Ms.Uile?”
“Oh, there are some good places a big ol’predator like this one could fit into. I think we’ll reintroduce this one to the mine over by Lelenart’e. They recently claimed it was tapped out and abandoned it, but did nothing to stop the little monsters from taking over. Did you see the bounty notice about cave spiders and rock rats at the guild earlier this week? They just move right in and start breeding up a storm once everyone leaves. This one’ll help thin those numbers down, and so long as no one goes exploring where they shouldn't, everyone should be safer.”
Merryweather nodded in understanding, she had been taught a lot by her Ms.Uile over the years since she had moved to the village. She knew so much about animals, and what they ate and did. She was so happy her mama had let her continue her lessons from her after she took her in. Now she watched in wonder as the wolf took out the most mysterious of her tools.
It looked like a box, a tiny little crate. But as Uile opened it the ropes around the serpent slackened and fell off, sliding to the side. A bright green glow surrounded the slumbering monster and it began to shrink, and shrink until it was as small as the little goblins palm. Then it was picked up by Uile and dropped into the box. “There we go, snug as a bug. It’ll stay in there sleeping until I set it free.” she explained for what seemed like the thousandth time to the little girl.
“Ms.Uile? Where’d ya get such a fancy tool like tha? I ain’t ever seen any other adventurer wit something like that.”
Uile looked up at her as she stowed the box back into her pack, “oh well, that's a bit of a long story kiddo, and kind of boring.” she sighed, slinging the pack and her hook over her back, “Same person I got this hook from actually.”
The little girl bounced around excitedly, “Pleaaase please tell me, ah’ll be goodn tha whole trip back a swear.”
Huffing in exasperation, looking behind her to the trail leading back to the village, “Well, alright, I guess since we have a long boring walk back we can have a long boring story too.”
Merryweather grinned and cheered, skipping along excitedly as they began their walk.
“Where to start. Well, I guess at the beginning then? You see, I’m not actually from this world….”
