All of the Allens and Dennis were against Jay becoming the commander.

The rest were in favor of the motion. That became the majority.

Jay was about to push harder on denying it, but YoAnna cut him off again. For some reason, he kept falling for that. The story kept slipping from his control. The morning light bent towards YoAnna on this black and hallowed ground. Her voice sounded grander, more impactful, and chilling just the same. They were actors on a stage, and that stage sat in the palm of YoAnna’s divine hand.

“Too close. Too close. We’ll have to decide this the old fashion way.” YoAnna pointed at Frank, spotlighting him with bent sunbeams. “Would you stand to defend Jay’s seat as our dear commander?”

“Yeah,” Frank answered, throwing Jay for an unexpected loop. Shouldn’t Frank want to be the commander? If not him, wouldn’t it be better that Brit took the position? Those two had the best leadership qualities out of all of the Champions.

“Casey, will you fight to dismiss the motion?” YoAnna asked, shining on the former Captain and right hand.

Casey licked her lips “I want the commander seat.”

“Then let us have a competition. Frank versus Casey.” YoAnna clapped her hands gleefully, the sunbeams circling around the entire group as if they were spotlights with the [Godling] serving as host to an exciting competition. “Frank will serve as Jay’s representative. Casey will serve as the motion to rebuff and rechoose.”

The other Champions nodded along.

“I’ll rid you of any weakness so you can compete fully,” YoAnna added. “Killing blows are allowed since I’ll keep both parties from dying. Understood?”

“Excellent,” Casey said, flashing a predatory grin.

“Works for me.” Frank shrugged.

“I’m sorry,” Jay mumbled. “But Casey’s too good to lose. I might as well give up the position now.”

Casey was a gifted beauty. She was tremendously fast, strong, and athletic before gaining System powers and magic. She had accolades as a karate master. Her footwork from dance, from years of cheerleading, from everything she’d competed in made her the most graceful and deadly duelist among the [Fighters]. During the times when Jay had fallen quicker than the others, only Casey could stand a few moments longer than anyone else against YoAnna. That seemed fitting. Casey had been YoAnna’s right-hand woman for a while. And Casey wanted YoAnna as much as most folks. As much as Jay, perhaps.

Then if you wanted to look at things from a technical standpoint, she had the higher [Applied AP], almost three dozen AP above Frank’s. Her Chance was way higher, so even the story was blowing into Casey’s sails. Jay was feeling through meta-g that a victory here would produce Casey’s affinity in her next level up. The System had given notice about those without affinities, and it might be gearing up to give Casey hers. It would probably be stupid strong if she won. And to achieve command and regain her status beside YoAnna had all the plot numbers on Casey’s side. In every way, Casey had the high ground.

Then there was Frank.

He was an outside factor since the night they met at YoAnna's seventeenth birthday. Frank didn’t care about the drama, the deep complexities of stories, or the super technical factors. He was a guy who wanted to kill monsters and protect what was good in the world. He wanted to spend time with the family he'd been torn away from when he was made into a child soldier in a secret program. An effort of the world's governments to get their people within YoAnna's inner circle. Which was manipulated by global assassins. You could barely imagine the number of brainwashed kids who probably tried to backstab, front stab, stab-stab Frank to get that one single spot as a Champion reserved for them.
