In a dark Hong Kong alley, a gangster posted up like a watchdog with his buddies. He was wearing a tank-top that showed off derogatory tattoos covering both arms. His attention shifted from his buddies as he stepped out into the street and moved to intercept Jay.

The gangster’s profile displayed him as a Level 11 Infernal-Homerunner, an eager up-and-comer of the Triads and the World Knife Asian division. He didn’t move alone. He had a dozen low Rank 2 buddies with demonic Class derivatives following him. They all looked eager to use their powers for any reason.

The Homerunner swaggered into Jay’s path with his taller body framed by the dozens of blinking neon signs behind him. He had a bat resting on his shoulder as he skipped over a puddle playfully before coming to a stop.

It had rained recently, so the street was wet and smelly. Whoever would decide to buy and rebuild this place after Jay and Kleo finished should check the septic system and have it replaced. Thankfully, there were no hidden bombs in the septic tanks or anywhere below. Jay kept checking just in case as the cocky gangster spat Chinese at him.

“Sorry, I only speak American,” Jay said with a country twang. Some of Brit’s Alabamian might’ve rubbed off on him.

“Oh, yippee ki-yay, cowboy,” the Infernal-Homerunner said, his grip on his bat readjusting with an aggressive intent. Sulfur smoke twirled from between the fingers holding his weapon. “Well, that’s okay. I’ll translate for you, my American friend. But can you please do me a favor?” The gangster flicked his bat forward and stopped a fraction of an inch from hitting Jay’s shoulder. “Take off your hoodie. It’s nice. I can give it to my girl since she’s your height.”

With his hoodie on, the magical darkness surrounding Jay’s head completely obscured his face. The only thing that would break the obscuring darkness would be the light from his eyes. He kept those dim at the moment. The only clue they would get for identifying him would be his tail hanging lowly behind him, the tip raised up to keep from touching the ground.

A few of the gangsters stared at his tail and laughed as if it was part of a cosplay. A few others noticed how Jay wasn’t listening to orders.

One of the gangster’s spoke angrily in Chinese.

A bunch of butchering knives came out. All Basic Quality instead of mundane. They must be working their [Crafter] derivatives hard.

“I’ll give you this one warning, American,” the Homerunner said intensely. “Because we got a bunch of killers who’ll tear you apart. I’m trying to be nice. So, give me the hoodie. And then get down and act like a monkey if you’re going to dress like one. I can use the entertainment before I think about letting you go–”

Kleo set free the first group of hostages without getting caught. She had two more groups to reach. The first group was easy, which only required Kleo to kill a few gangsters. The next two groups had heavier guards. Kleo could easily slip by them, but getting the hostages out safely would be trickier. Jay cracked his knuckles one by one as he slowly released the limiters on his Attributes and the bare minimum of powers needed.

The Homerunner stumbled on the last of his words. His buddies grew more and more nervous as Jay’s System limiters unlocked further and further. One man felt aggravated by the devilish nature of Jay’s powers and lost his mind. He sprang into the attack with his big knife raised high. He had a Skill that rushed him forward quickly like he was running on the wind. He chopped at Jay’s head.

Jay looked at the attacker’s neck, his purple eye glinting in the darkness of his hood.

The attacker cried out in shock, lost his footing, and tumbled past Jay. He dropped his weapon and grabbed his neck as if to check if it was still there, suffering from the effects of Jay’s [Headhunter] Talent.

The Homerunner shouted, using anger to hide his fear. He winded back his baseball bat while covering it in minor hellfire.

Jay examined the necks of the gangsters surrounding him using his spatial-g and [Headhunter]. He fed the Talent only the exact Mana it needed.

Homerunner and all his buddies dropped to the floor. Their weapons clattered on the ground. They cried in fear and horror, gripping their necks as if Jay had beaded them. Their strangled cries rang out loud and clear.

One cry might’ve been overlooked, acquiring little attention. But a dozen voices couldn’t be ignored. All at once, three hundred gangsters filed out of every bar down the strip. Some gangsters were part-time World Knife assassins.

They had knives, crowbars, bats, chains with thick metal links, and magical powers aplenty. The triad mob stormed as one unit, filling up the street, before stopping twenty feet away from Jay.

At the front of the group stood the Dragon-Head, the leader of this Triad unit working closely with the Wold Knife here. His profile had him at Level 25, and he’d gained much of his power through demonic pacts and the slaughter of Systemized who were held hostage and smuggled from the Western Hemisphere. The Dragon-Head wore a pinstripe suit, a fur coat, and had a 1920s hustler vibe while armed with a dao, a Chinese sword.

“Hello, my name is Jay Luckrun,” said Jay, paraphrasing the legendary Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride. “You’ve sunken my house. Prepare for death.”

By the time the Dragon-Head realized what Jay’s name insinuated, the [Freak] jumped across the tiny gap between them. Jay flying kicked the gangster leader with only a minimum amount of gravity power needed.

The Dragon-Head’s ribcage splintered into pieces as he flew back into his shocked men, plowing through them like a bowling ball hitting a perfect strike. Jay hit the floor and got to work, elbowing the closest guy behind him in the chest and killing him with that one blow. Jay kicked a man’s legs into pieces. He punched a guy’s jaw off his face.

Jay worked his way steadily in a rampaging circle as his punches and kicks came out like bullets out of a machine gun. Most of the gangsters had Systems, but other than the Dragon-Head, they were only high Rank 1s or low Rank 2s. They couldn’t examine Jay’s Level 51 power, even with the scouting Class among them, but they could see for themselves how Jay terribly outmatched them.

Seeing this didn’t mean they would give up and fall to their knees for his mercy. They were the villains of his story, bent to the magic of [YoAnna’s Commander of Challenge and Change], so they played their part as they got to live and die by the sword of their own creation– violence.

Jay slapped aside chopping knife strikes. He caught swinging chains and yanked the attacker into a head-busting punch. He kicked men so hard he sent them flying into other men. And when the powers came out, he didn’t always dodge them. Jay let their powers splashed against him, ignoring the little damage he suffered to his Health and to his clothing.

Demonic flames, ghoulish winds, sparkling ice, lashing lightning, glowing black orbs, boulders shaped as dog’s heads, lunging dragon energy constructs, rising spikes of earth, and a bunch of demonic Kamehameha ripoffs with a couple of cosmetic twists depending on the user– these powers and more flew at him. He didn’t tank all of it because that would scuff up his clothes a little too much, but he did enough tanking to drive the fear of the [Freak] into them.

Jay even caught an energy orb with his hand. Then he shoved the orb at the nearest attacker before it exploded just for that extra dash of theatrics.

“The Three Greats of China will kill you, Jay Luckrun!” shouted the Dragon-head, his System allowing him to speak despite his crushed chest. The leader of the local Triad group got to his feet shakily as Jay tossed aside the last able fighter amid his gangsters. “They are true gods! They have magic powers you can’t defeat! I will be there in the Hell Circles waiting for you.”

“That was an interesting threat. I think I’m going to gravitate toward you for a bit.” Jay strode toward the gangster leader.

The Dragon-Head raised his sword. Twin Chinese dragons coiled around the weapon as he used a Super Skill. All the damage he’d suffered gave him extra power to strike down with one boss-killing blow. He shouted something proudly in Chinese and rushed Jay to split him in two.

Jay scooted a foot to the left without breaking his stride. It almost looked like a barely visible purple force surrounded both Jay and the Dragon-Head. The force picked Jay up and swung him out of the way just as the Dragon-Head struck down.

The Triad Boss’s Super Skill tore forward for thirty feet, destroying the street and the mangled gangsters who hadn’t died and were left behind. The Dragon-head looked with horror at his wasted Super Skill and accidental friendly fire. His Conviction cracked, falling to pieces as Jay strolled past him.

Jay’s arm moved like a blur before he joined his hands together in his hoodie’s pouch. His tail flicked to the side and patted the Dragon-Head’s cheek. The gangster leader’s head rolled away from between his shoulders. It took his body a second to realize it was dead before collapsing, lying with a bunch of slain and incapacitated villains as Jay moved past the bars.

While Jay aimed to kill, not all of his hits were enough to kill, and it would take too much effort to slay the incapacitated or those who ran away. That was okay. Jay had plenty more killing to do in front of him.

He wiped some soot off his hoodie’s shoulder. The Great-Quality outfit barely suffered any damage. Kleo finished rescuing the second hostage group by the time Jay reached the end of the bar strip. He crossed through a steel gate to enter a courtyard between towering apartment complexes. Jay looked up at as a thousand assassins aimed guns, rocket launchers, and magic attacks from their balconies and down at Jay.

“Hello, my name is Jay Luckrun,” Jay said. “You’ve sunken my house. Prepare for death.”
